Jean-Philippe Thiran

Jean-Philippe Thiran was born in Namur, Belgium, in August 1970. He received the Electrical Engineering degree and the PhD degree from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, in 1993 and 1997, respectively. From 1993 to 1997, he was the co-ordinator of the medical image analysis group of the Communications and Remote Sensing Laboratory at UCL, mainly working on medical image analysis. Dr Jean-Philippe Thiran joined the Signal Processing Institute (ITS) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, in February 1998 as a senior lecturer. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2004, to Associate Professor in 2011 and is now a Full Professor since 2020. He also holds a 20% position at the Department of Radiology of the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and of the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) as Associate Professor ad personam. Dr Thiran's current scientific interests include Computational medical imaging: acquisition, reconstruction and analysis of imaging data, with emphasis on regularized linear inverse problems (compressed sensing, convex optimization). Applications to medical imaging: diffusion MRI, ultrasound imaging, inverse planning in radiotherapy, etc.Computer vision & machine learning: image and video analysis, with application to facial expression recognition, eye tracking, lip reading, industrial inspection, medical image analysis, etc.

Denis Duboule

Denis Duboule est né en 1955. De Nationalités Suisse et Française, il étudie la biologie à lUniversité de Genève où il reçoit un PhD dans le domaine de lembryologie des mammifères en 1984. Il passe ensuite 10 ans à létranger, dabord comme post-doc et group leader à la faculté de Médecine de Strasbourg (CNRS), puis au Laboratoire Européen de Biologie Moléculaire, à Heidelberg (Allemagne). En 1993, il est nommé Professeur ordinaire à lUniversité de Genève, où il dirige le département de Génétique et Evolution depuis 1997. En 2001 il prend la direction du pôle dexcellence NCCR aux Frontières de la Génétique et celle de la division médecine-Biologie du FNS en 2012. En 2006, il est nommé Professeur ordinaire à lEPFL, Lausanne, où il dirige le laboratoire de Génomique du Développement (UpDUB). Ses activités de recherche sexercent dans le domaine de lembryologie, de la génétique et de la génomique du développement des mammifères, dans le contexte général de lEvolution des structures et des organes. En particulier, son laboratoire a été associé à de nombreuses recherches dans le domaine de lanalyse structurelle et fonctionnelle des gènes architectes (Hox) et de leur régulation transcriptionnelle pendant le développement précoce. Denis Duboule est également actif dans le domaine de la communication de la science. Il est membre de lAcademia Europea ainsi que dautres académies. Il est également membre de lInstitut de France (Académie des Sciences), de la Société Royale (UK) et de lAcadémie des Sciences Américaine (NAS). Il a reçu plusieurs prix et distinction, notamment le Prix Marcel Benoist, le Prix Louis-Jeantet de Médecine en 1998 et le Prix international de lINSERM en 2010. Kay Severin

Kay Severin was born in Germany in 1967. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1995 with a thesis in the group of Prof. W. Beck, University of Munich. Subsequently, he joined the group of Prof. M. R. Ghadiri as a postdoctoral fellow. In 1997, he started independent research projects ("Habilitation") at the Department of Chemistry, University of Munich. In 2001, he became assistant professor at the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL). Since 2009, he is full professor at the same institute. Awards: Bayerischer Habilitations Förderpreis (1997), ADUC award of the year (2001), Heinz Maier-Leibnitz award of the DFG (2001), award of the Karl-Ziegler foundation (2001), Arnold Sommerfeld award of the Bavarian Academy of Science (2001), Werner Prize of The Swiss Chemical Society (2003), Otto Roelen Medal of the DECHEMA (2005), award for chemistry of the Academy of Sciences, Göttingen (2007), Dalton Transactions European Lectureship (2008).

Tudor Ratiu

Citoyen des Etats-Unis, Tudor Ratiu est né en 1950 à Timisoara, Roumanie. Il a obtenu un diplôme en mathématiques en 1973 ainsi qu'un diplôme de maîtrise en mathématiques appliquées en 1974 à l'Université de Timisoara. Pour des raisons politiques il lui est interdit de poursuivre ses études et en 1975 il est obligé de quitter son pays. En 1980 il obtient un doctorat à l'Université de Californie à Berkeley avec une thèse en mécanique géométrique et est nommé professeur assistant de recherche T.H. Hildebrandt à l'Université de Michigan, Ann Arbor. En 1983 il rejoint l'Université d'Arizona, Tucson, comme professeur associé et en 1987 l'Université de Californie, Santa Cruz, ou il est nommé professeur ordinaire en 1988. Il lui a été décerné une bourse postdoctorale du Fonds national scientifique américain, une bourse de la fondation A.P. Sloan, la chaire de recherche professoriale Miller à Berkeley, une bourse Fulbright et le prix allemand A. von Humboldt. Il a été professeur et chercheur invité dans plusieurs départements et instituts de recherche mathématiques du monde. Les thèmes principaux de sa recherche sont l'analyse globale, la mécanique des fluides et du plasma, la dynamique hamiltonienne, la mécanique géométrique, la géométrie symplectique et de Poisson, la théorie de bifurcations et l'étude des systèmes complètement intégrables. Ses travaux concernent l'aspect mathématique de ces problèmes ainsi que leurs applications en physique et les sciences d'ingénieur. Il est auteur, en collaboration, de plusieurs livres de spécialité. En 1997 il est nommé professeur ordinaire en analyse au Département de mathématiques et entre en fonction en juillet 1998.

Alfio Quarteroni

Of italian nationality, Alfio Quarteroni was born on May 30th 1952. He pursued his studies in mathematics at University of Pavia and at University of Paris VI. In 1986 he was nominated full professor at Catholic University of Brescia, later professor in mathematics at University of Minnesota at Minneapolis and professor in numerical analysis at Politecnico di Milano. He is designated full professor in 1997 and enters into service with EPFL in 1998. At EPFL, he teaches numerical analysis to engineers and mathematicians and holds specialized courses about mathematical modelling and scientific computing for master and PhD students. He had been scientific director of CRS4, plenary speaker of more than two hundred international conferences; he is member of the European Academy of Sciences, the Italian Academy of Sciences, the Lombard Academy of Science and Letters. He is Editor in Chief of two book series (MS&A and Unitext) by Springer, associate editor of 25 international journals. He has been plenary speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM2006. He had been responsible of several European research networks. His team has carried out the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic simulations for the optimization of Alinghi, the Swiss sailing yacht that has won two editions of the America's Cup in 2003 and 2007.
