En optimisation convexe, une inégalité matricielle linéaire (Linear matricial inequality ou LMI) est une expression de la forme : LMI(y):=A_0+y_1A_1+y_2A_2+\cdots+y_m A_m\geq0, où

A_0,, A_1,, A_2,,\dots,A_m sont dans l'ensemble S_n(\R) des matrices symétriques,
B\geq0 signifie que B est une matrice semi-définie positive appartenant au sous-ensemble S_n^+(\R) de l'ensemble des matrices symétriques S_n(\R).

A convex set of robust D—stabilizing controllers using Cauchy's argument principle

A new approach is presented to obtain a convex set of robust D—stabilizing fixed structure controllers, relying on Cauchy's argument principle. A convex set of D—stabilizing controllers around an initial D—stabilizing controller for a multi-model set is represented by an infinite set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). By appropriate sampling of the D—stability boundary, a Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) is proposed that can be integrated in other synthesis approaches to ensure D—stability along other design specifications. To showcase utility of the proposed approach, two different examples are given: a boost converter with multi-model uncertainty and a laser-beam system modeled by an identified finite impulse response.

Selling robustness margins: A framework for optimizing reserve capacities for linear systems

This paper proposes a method for solving robust optimal control problems with modulated uncertainty sets. We consider constrained uncertain linear systems and interpret the uncertainty sets as “robustness margins” or “reserve capacities”. In particular, given a certain reward for offering such a reserve capacity, we address the problem of determining the optimal size and shape of the uncertainty set, i.e. how much reserve capacity our system should offer. By assuming polyhedral constraints, restricting the class of the uncertainty sets and using affine decision rules, we formulate a convex program to solve this problem. We discuss several specific families of uncertainty sets, whose respective constraints can be reformulated as linear constraints, second-order cone constraints, or linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example demonstrates our approach.

Fixed-structure H-2 controller design for polytopic systems via LMIs

In this paper a new approach for fixed-structure H2 controller design in terms of solutions to a set of linear matrix inequalities are given. Both discrete- and continuous-time single-input single-output (SISO) time- invariant systems are considered. Then the results are extended to systems with polytopic uncertainty. The presented methods are based on an inner convex approximation of the non-convex set of fixed-structure H2 controllers. The designed procedures initialized either with a stable polynomial or with a stabilizing controller. An iterative procedure for robust controller design is given that converges to a suboptimal solution. The monotonic decreasing of the upper bound on the H2 norm is established theoretically for both nominal and robust controller design.
