A collaboration tool helps people to collaborate. The purpose of a collaboration tool is to support a group of two or more individuals to accomplish a common goal or objective. Collaboration tools can be either of a non-technological nature such as paper, flipcharts, post-it notes or whiteboards. They can also include software tools and applications such as collaborative software. Collaboration tools before Web 2.0 The first idea to use computers in order to work with each other was formed in 1945 when Vannevar Bush shared his thoughts on a system he named"memex" in his article "As We May Think". A system that stores books, records and communications of an individual and makes them available at any time. At this stage he called it "an enlarged supplement to his memory". This course addresses the relationship between specific technological features and the learners' cognitive processes. It also covers the methods and results of empirical studies on this topic: do student actually learn due to technologies?

This course is a joint initiative between the School of Engineering and the College of Management to encourage and promote entrepreneurship and management skills, engineering design, hands-on experience, teamwork, and awareness of social and ethical implications in engineering and management.

Students will be exposed to hands-on design problems throughout the term. They will acquire methodologies to (1) address open ended engineering problems, (2) cultivate creativity, (3) support decision making and (4) develop problem solving abilities.

Semiconducting Nanowire-Based Optoelectronic Fibers

he recent ability to integrate semiconductor-based optoelectronic functionalities within thin fibers is opening intriguing opportunities for flexible electronics and advanced textiles. The scalable integration of high-quality semiconducting devices within functional fibers however remains a challenge. It is difficult with current strategies to combine high light absorption, good microstructure and efficient electrical contact. The growth of semiconducting nanowires is a great tool to control crystal orientation and ensure a combination of light absorption and charge extraction for efficient photodetection. Thus far, however, leveraging the attributes of nanowires has remained seemingly incompatible with fiber materials, geometry, and processing approaches. Here, the integration of semiconducting nanowire-based devices at the tip and along the length of polymer fibers is demonstrated for the first time. The scalable thermal drawing process is combined with a simple sonochemical treatment to grow nanowires out of electrically addressed amorphous selenium domains. First principles density-functional theory calculations show that this approach enables to tailor the surface energy of crystal facets and favors nanowire growth along a preferred orientation, resulting in fiber-integrated devices of unprecedented performance. This novel platform is exploited to demonstrate an all-fiber-integrated fluorescence imaging system, highlighting novel opportunities in sensing, advanced optical probes, and smart textiles.

Fraud within Asymmetric Multi-Hop Cellular Networks

At Financial Cryptography 2003, Jakobsson, Hubaux, and Buttyan suggested a lightweight micro-payment scheme aimed at encouraging routing collaboration in asymmetric multi-hop cellular networks. We will show in this paper that this scheme suffers from some weaknesses. Firstly, we will describe an attack which enables two adversaries in the same cell to communicate freely without being challenged by the operator center. We will put forward a solution to fix this protocol. Then we will describe another method that allows an attacker to determine the secret keys of the other users. This attack thwarts the micro-payment scheme's purpose because an attacker can thus communicate without being charged. Finally we will suggest some solutions to counteract this attack.

Monitoring Collaboration in Flexible and Personal Learning Environments.

Both virtual and personal learning environments (VLEs and PLEs) are technologies widely used with educational purposes. Moreover, there also exists a pedagogical trend towards the development of high-level competencies, such as the capacity to work collaboratively in a group. These two trends come together within the field of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). The evaluation of CSCL situations requires taking into account, among other things, the process of collaboration. In response to this need, a number of collaboration analysis tools have been developed. However, the use of these tools in the decentralized scenarios typically found when integrating third-party external in VLEs and PLEs is a complex matter: the information retrieved and the access to it are heterogeneous; and the lack of data sharing standards between the learning software and the analysis tools reduces the probability of compatibility. The present work aims to delve into the problem of the integration of collaboration analysis tools and learning software. A solution is proposed to support monitoring in an architecture that already integrates third-party external tools in PLEs and VLEs named GLUE!. The proposal is illustrated by means of an example based on a real CSCL experience that took place in a course at our University.
