Christophe Moser

Christophe Moser is Associate Professor of Optics and the Section Director in the Microengineering department at EPFL. He obtained his PhD at the California Institute of Technology in optical information processing in 2000. He co-founded and was the CEO of Ondax Inc (acquired by Coherent Inc.), Monrovia California for 10 years before joining EPFL in 2010. His current interests are ultra-compact endoscopic optical imaging through multimode fibers, multimode fiber lasers, retinal imaging and additive manufacturing via volumetric 3D printing with light. He is the co-founder of Composyt light lab in the field of head worn displays in 2014 (acquired by Intel Corp), Earlysight SA and Readily3D. He is the author and co-author of 75 peer reviewed publications and 45 patents.

Cavitation induced by pulsed and continuous-wave fiber lasers in confinement

Bubbles generated with lasers in liquids under confinement have been investigated for their potential use as the driving mechanism for liquid micro-jets in various microfluidic devices, such as needle-free jet injectors. Here, we report on the study of bubble formation by a continuous-wave (CW) and a pulsed laser inside an open-ended microfluidic capillary. This results in a direct comparison between bubbles generated by laser sources emitting light in different time scales (ms and ns). The bubble kinetics represents an important parameter because it determines the available kinetic energy for a subsequent liquid jet. We show that the bubble growth rate increases linearly with the delivered energy for both the CW and the pulsed laser. Experiments show that at equal absorption coefficient, the bubble growth for both lasers is similar, which indicates that they can be used interchangeably for jet generation purposes. However, bubbles generated by a CW laser require more optical energy, which is due to heat dissipation. Furthermore, the bubbles generated by the CW laser show a slightly larger variation in size and growth rate for identical initial conditions, which we attribute to the stochastic nature of thermocavitation.

Controlling Light in Scattering Materials for Volumetric Additive Manufacturing

3D printing has revolutionized the manufacturing of volumetric components and structures in many areas. Several fully volumetric light-based techniques have been recently developed thanks to the advent of photocurable resins, promising to reach unprecedented short print time (down to a few tens of seconds) while keeping a good resolution (around 100 mu m). However, these new approaches only work with homogeneous and relatively transparent resins so that the light patterns used for photo-polymerization are not scrambled along their propagation. Herein, a method that takes into account light scattering in the resin prior to computing projection patterns is proposed. Using a tomographic volumetric printer, it is experimentally demonstrated that implementation of this correction is critical when printing objects whose size exceeds the scattering mean free path. To show the broad applicability of the technique, functional objects of high print fidelity are fabricated in hard organic scattering acrylates and soft cell-laden hydrogels (at 4 million cells mL(-1)). This opens up promising perspectives in printing inside turbid materials with particular interesting applications for bioprinting cell-laden constructs.

High resolution and three-dimensional printing in complex photosensitive materials

The present invention is related to a method of volumetric manufacturing a three-dimensional object or article by illuminating a non-transparent and/or absorptive photo-sensitive material with light patterns from multiple angles, comprising the steps of capturing at least one fluorescence or scattering snapshot for one or a set of different illuminating projected patterns in the said photo-sensitive material, obtaining therefrom at least one physical parameter describing the light propagation through the said photo-sensitive material, and computing a set of optimized projected patterns with the aid of the at least one physical parameter, wherein said optimized projected patterns (204) are used for volumetric manufacturing said three-dimensional object or article. The present invention is furthermore related to a device for performing said method.
