Biographie

Aryan Rezaei Rad is a structural (and earthquake) engineer and postdoctoral researcher at the laboratory for timber construction (IBOIS). Aryan studied Earthquake Engineering at Tehran Polytechnic, and Structural Engineering at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, where he earned his PhD in 2020 under the direction of Prof. Dr. Yves Weinand and Prof. Dr. Henry Burton.Aryan's areas of expertise include computer-aided engineering, numerical simulations and Finite Element analysis, nonlinear structural analysis, computer programming, structural dynamics, risk-based (probabilistic) performance assessment, and experimental testing. Aryan has also experienced graduate research assistantship studying the collapse performance of Los Angeles woodframe structures under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Henry Burton at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).

A Collaborative Workflow to Automate the Design, Analysis, and Construction of Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures

This paper introduces a computational framework that fosters collaboration between architects, engineers, and contractors by bridging the gap between architectural design, structural analysis, and digital construction. The present research is oriented toward the formulation of an automatic design-to-construction pipeline for Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures (IATPS). This construction system is based on assembling timber panels through the sole interlocking of wood-wood connections inspired by traditional Japanese joinery. Prior research focused on developing distinct computational workflows and dealt with the automation of 3D modelling, numerical simulation, fabrication, and assembly separately. In the current study, a single and interactive design tool is presented. Its versatility is demonstrated through two case studies, as well as the assembly of a physical prototype with a robotic arm. Results indicate that efficiency in terms of data flow and stakeholder synergy is considerably increased. The proposed approach contributes to the†Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 by facilitating the collaborative design of sustainable timber structures. Besides, the research also contributes to SDG 9 as it paves the way for sustainable industrialisation of the timber construction sector through streamlined digital fabrication and robotic assembly processes. This reduces manufacturing time and associated costs while leveraging richer design possibilities.

Macro Modeling Technique for Integrally-Attached Timber Plates: Sensitivity Analysis

Using the Integral Mechanical Attachment (IMA) technique, a new macroscopic model has recently been introduced to simulate the structural behavior of segmented timber plates. The macro model is based on employing only beam and spring elements, which aims to reduce the computational time associated with the database generation and analysis runtime. Despite its simplicity, the model provides a reliable modeling approach. In the current paper, the sensitivity of the behavior of the macro model to variations in the geometry of timber plates is investigated. Three types of timber plates with rectangular, parallelogram and irregular geometries are designed and subjected to the sensitivity analysis. The corresponding macro models are subjected to out-of-plane loads. Constructing the corresponding continuum Finite Element (FE) models, the deformation of the macro models is compared to that the FE models. The deformed shape obtained from the macro model was similar to that of the FE model with an approximately 5% error.

This paper introduces the conceptual design of sustainable timber structures using raw wood. It pre-sents a workflow for systematically generating Nexorades using a tiling method for multi-valence quad subdivided surfaces. The system is designed based on an integrated framework combining re-sources from local forestry, knowledge from geometry processing, joinery for raw wood, laser scan-ning and digital fabrication, and structural engineering. Particular focus is given to Cross joint geome-try and tool-path generation. Also, the global structural performance of the system is assessed. The results indicate that the proposed design methodology can offer an efficient and sustainable construc-tion technique. Furthermore, the methodology is reflected in a robotically fabricated prototype, demonstrating that the design framework can seamlessly integrate digital tools and construction.
