Ductile-to-brittle transition in tensile failure of particle reinforced metals

We present an analytical micromechanical model designed to simulate the tensile stress-strain behaviour and failure of damaging composites containing a high volume fraction of reinforcing particles. One internal damage micromechanism is considered, namely particle fracture, which is assumed to obey a Weibull distribution. Final composite tensile failure occurs when one of two possible failure criteria is reached, given by (i) the onset of tensile instability, or (ii) an "avalanche-like" propagation of particle breaks to neighbouring particles. We show that an experimentally observed transition from failure by tensile instability to abrupt failure resulting from an increase of matrix strength can be mimicked by the model because local load-sharing (i.e. load transfer from a broken particle to its immediate neighbours) is accounted for. Thermal conductivity of Al-SiC composites with monomodal and bimodal particle size distribution

The thermal conductivity of aluminum matrix composites having a high volume fraction of SiC particles is investigated by comparing data for composites fabricated by infiltrating liquid aluminum into preforms made either from a single particle size, or by mixing and packing SiC particles of two largely different average sizes (170 and 16 mu m). For composites based on powders with a monomodal size distribution, the thermal conductivity increases steadily from 151 W/m K for particles of average diameter 8 mu m to 216 W/m K for 170 mu m particles. For the bimodal particle mixtures the thermal conductivity increases with increasing volume fraction of coarse particles and reaches a roughly constant value of 220 W/m K for mixtures with 40 or more vol.% of coarse particles. It is shown that all present data can be accounted for by the differential effective medium (DEM) scheme taking into account a finite interfacial thermal resistance. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Damage propagation and fracture in highly reinforced particulate metal matrix composites

This study contributes to our understanding of the damage evolution and fracture behaviour of two-phase materials that combine brittle particles with a ductile matrix. We focus on model composites roughly half-ceramic/half-metal that are produced in-house by infiltrating ceramic powder beds with liquid pure aluminium or aluminium alloy. Like many other materials, these composites exhibit two modes of tensile failure; they fail either by tensile instability, or alternatively they break prematurely, in a brittle fashion. A micromechanical model is established that links damage build-up and composite fracture. This analytical model predicts the tensile curve and the strength of particulate composites that undergo damage in the form of statistical particle fracture. Similarly to models for continuous-fibre reinforced composites, two extreme modes of load sharing (a fully local and a global load sharing mode) are accounted for, which yield a lower and an upper bound for the failure stress. Under local load sharing, the model predicts either of two different failure modes, i.e. brittle failure or failure by the onset of tensile instability, whereas global load sharing induces the latter failure mode only. We show that this model captures the transition from failure by tensile instability to brittle failure that occurs with an increase of matrix strength or with a decrease of particle strength. The local load redistribution upon particle fracture and avalanche-like growth of damage can thus explain the premature brittle failure that is observed in some composites. The direct assessment of the particle strength properties not being possible, these are "back-calculated" using the aforementioned model and tensile tests (with periodic unload-reload cycles to monitor the evolution of Young's modulus) conducted on composites made with different matrices. Using these particle properties, we show in particular that composite strength predicted under the assumption of local load sharing is in good agreement with experiment, and that fracture of particles embedded in a soft matrix is not only governed by the average particle stress, but also by the composite plastic strain. Moreover, tests of axisymmetric notched specimens indicate that damage possibly also depends on stress triaxiality.

Fracture of high volume fraction ceramic particle reinforced aluminium under multiaxial stress

Circumferentially notched cylindrical bars of high volume fraction Al2O3 particle reinforced aluminium are tested in tension to probe the role of tensile stress triaxiality on damage and failure of such materials. The transverse strain is monitored with a specially designed video extensometer. A significant dependence of the peak average stress and failure strain on notch radius is observed. Finite-element simulations of the tests are conducted on the basis of a micromechanical model derived from earlier studies of damage and failure of these composites under uniaxial tensile deformation (Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids 2009;57:1781). The simulations show that stress and strain distributions within the notched composite samples deviate significantly from predictions of Bridgman’s simplified analysis. Comparison with data shows that, whereas calculations capture satisfactorily the evolution of the average composite flow stress as a function of notch radius at small strains, the notched samples damage faster and fail at strains lower than predicted. Two phenomena may explain the discrepancy, namely (i) damage coalescence beyond a threshold level, and (ii) the incapacity of the matrix to sustain large hydrostatic stresses, which results from the presence of internal surfaces (cracked particles and possibly matrix voiding).
