Complémentarité de la modélisation physique et numérique à l’exemple d’un aménagement hydroélectrique / Complementarity of physical and numerical modeling using the example of a run-of-river hydropower plant

Comme beaucoup d’aménagements hydroélectriques au fil de l’eau, celui de Lavey sur le Rhône en Suisse est affecté de manière récurrente par l’alluvionnement de sa retenue. Outre la gestion sédimentaire, les thèmes abordés par la modélisation concernent également la capacité de transit des crues au droit du barrage, les écoulements d’approche de la prise d'eau et l’optimisation des consignes d’exploitation de l’aménagement. Les niveaux d’eau, les vitesses et directions d’écoulement, la répartition du débit dans les pertuis, les processus d’alluvionnement et de purge sont ainsi analysés selon une approche stratégique qui s’appuie sur la complémentarité des modélisations numériques et physique. L’approche numérique à degré de complexité croissant est particulièrement intéressante pour la documentation des écoulements à large échelle et pour l’étude préalable des variantes d’aménagement. La simulation du transport sédimentaire confirme cependant l’avantage de la modélisation physique. Cette étude de cas conclut à la complémentarité des modélisations numériques et physique, en soulignant l’importance du calage sur les observations et mesures in situ. Une approche stratégique est finalement proposée pour le choix du ou des modèle(s) adéquat(s), basée sur des critères d’échelle et de problème à examiner.----------------------As several of other run-of-river hydropower plants, the hydraulic scheme of Lavey on the Rhone River in Switzerland is concerned by continuous reservoir sedimentation. The domain of interest of the modeling is the appropriate sediment management, the flood evacuation capacity of the weir, the approach flow of the water intake as well as the exploitation rules of the plant. Water levels, flow velocities and directions, flow distribution between the entries of the water intake, sediment deposition and flushing were analysed by a strategic approach based on the complementarity of numerical and physical modeling. The numerical simulation with increasing complexity level is particularly interesting for large scale flow analysis as well as pre-evaluation of alternatives. The simulation of sediment transport phenomenon confirms the utility of the physical model. This case study confirms the pertinence of the hybrid modeling approach based on a calibration using in situ observations and measures. A strategic approach is finally given for choosing the adequate model(s), based on criteria of scale and phenomenon.

Numerical modeling of cohesive sediment transport and bed morphology in estuaries

Two major lines of investigation have been pursued in this thesis: (1) More efficient, robust and realistic numerical techniques are designed for the simulation of complex turbulent fluid flows; (2) A new algorithm and its analysis is performed in the context of multiphasic fluid flow, for a cohesive fine-grained sediment (fluid mud) transport in estuaries. Estuaries exist between marine and freshwater system where waters of different physical, chemical and biological composition meet, combine and disperse primarily due to tidal influences. In the present thesis, the behavior of cohesive sediment in estuaries is reviewed based on the existing literature. Basic theories and recent developments are introduced to describe the formation of fluid mud from a very dilute suspension and its motion down a natural river bed with complex bathymetry. The present work contributes to the numerical simulation of complex turbulent multiphasic fluid flows encountered in estuarine channels, with the aim of the better understanding of the underlying physical processes as well as predicting realistically the cohesive sediment transport and bed morphology in such a zone. The model is based on the mass preserving method by using the so-called Raviart-Thomas finite element on the unstructured mesh in the horizontal plane. In the vertical, the computational domain is divided into number of layers at predefined heights and the method uses a conventional conforming P1 finite element scheme, with the advantage that the lowermost and uppermost layers variable height allow a faithful representation of the time-varying bed and free surface, respectively. Concerning the modeling of turbulence, the research effort focuses on the turbulence two-equation k - ε closure for the vertical parameterization of eddy viscosity. More precisely, a robust up-to-date algorithm is used for this issue. The new methodology is developed with the aim to account for more general relevant effects in the closure. The proposed model offers the capability to cope with the stiffness problem introduced by the large difference between the solid phase flow time scale and the hydrodynamic one, by using a sub-cycling strategy, whereas the splitting scheme is adopted with the aim of stability and the positivity of the relevant turbulent variables. The flexibility of the model and its performance are evaluated on several free-surface flow configurations with increasing complexity : homogeneous unsteady non-uniform flows in plane open channel flows, U-shaped (193°) curved open channel flow. Concerning the cohesive sediment transport, most of the existing models in the literature assume the analogous transport characteristics with that of the coarse sediment and adopt the relevant developed sediment transport for the latter to treat the former. Moreover, these existing models do not account for the consolidation of the mud-bed. The present research effort focused on a novel methodology based on the realistic empirical relationships, which accounts for the mutually exclusive processes for re-suspension and/or erosion and deposition of fine sediment, whereas only a limited range of bed shear stresses is allowed for simultaneous erosion and deposition to occur. Hence, on this basis, the new model investigated the bed morphology evolution by taking into account of the fluidization and/or consolidation of the fluid mud, which was handled by modeling the bed in three layers: (i) the mud-bed layer, (ii) the partially consolidated bed and (iii) the fully consolidated bed. The prediction of deposition/re-suspension using these two different methods lead to a non negligible difference in the results. Therefore, investigation of the true mechanism of erosion/deposition processes for cohesive sediments and their implementation in the numerical model is very important. This suggests that a realistic prediction must account for the fresh mud-bed re-suspension once deposited, as well as the consolidation and/or fluidization of the mud-bed deposits. Finally, the capability and improvements of the model are demonstrated, and its predicting performance is successfully evaluated by applying it to the simulation of the Po River Estuary (PRE) in Italy, which is the main source of river water discharge into the Northern Adriatic Sea. The analysis showed that the consolidation/fluidization process at the bed may have important influence on the prediction of bed morphology evolution. The three-layer approach used in this thesis is a first attempt to model these processes in detail within a numerical model.

Fuel Cell Modeling and Simulations

Fundamental and phenomenological models for cells, stacks, and complete systems of PEFC and SOFC are reviewed and their predictive power is assessed by comparing model simulations against experiments. Computationally efficient models suited for engineering design include the (1+1) dimensionality approach, which decouples the membrane in-plane and through-plane processes, and the volume-averaged-method (VAM) that considers only the lumped effect of pre-selected system components. The former model was shown to capture the measured lateral current density inhomogeneities in a PEFC and the latter was used for the optimization of commercial SOFC systems. State Space Modeling (SSM) was used to identify the main reaction pathways in SOFC and, in conjunction with the implementation of geometrically well- defined electrodes, has opened a new direction for the understanding of electrochemical reactions. Furthermore, SSM has advanced the understanding of the COpoisoning- induced anode impedance in PEFC. Detailed numerical models such as the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) method for transport in porous media and the full 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Navier-Stokes simulations are addressed. These models contain all components of the relevant physics and they can improve the understanding of the related phenomena, a necessary condition for the development of both appropriate simplified models as well as reliable technologies. Within the LB framework, a technique for the characterization and computer- reconstruction of the porous electrode structure was developed using advanced pattern recognition algorithms. In CFD modeling, 3-D simulations were used to investigate SOFC with internal methane steam reforming and have exemplified the significance of porous and novel fractal channel distributors for the fuel and oxidant delivery, as well as for the cooling of PEFC. As importantly, the novel concept has been put forth of functionally designed, fractal-shaped fuel cells, showing promise of significant performance improvements over the conventional rectangular shaped units. Thermo-economic modeling for the optimization of PEFC is finally addressed.

Part load flow in radial centrifugal pumps

Centrifugal pumps are required to sustain a stable operation of the system they support under all operating conditions. Minor modifications of the surfaces defining the pump's water passage can influence the tendency to unstable system operation significantly. The action of such modifications on the flow are yet not fully understood, leading to costly trial and error approaches in the solution of instability problems. The part-load flow in centrifugal pumps is inherently time-dependent due to the interaction of the rotating impeller with the stationary diffuser (Rotor-Stator Interaction, RSI). Furthermore, adverse pressure gradients in the pump diffuser may cause flow separation, potentially inducing symmetry-breaking non-uniformities, either spatially stationary or rotating and either steady or intermittent. Rotating stall, characterized by the presence of distinct cells of flow separation on the circumference, rotating at a fraction of the impeller revolution rate, has been observed in thermal and hydraulic turbomachines. Due to its complexity, the part-load flow in radial centrifugal pumps is a major challenge for numerical flow simulation methods. The present study investigates the part-load flow in radial centrifugal pumps and pump-turbines by experimental and numerical methods, the latter using a finite volume discretization of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation. Physical phenomena of part load flow are evidenced based on three case studies, and the ability of numerical simulation methods to reproduce part-load flow in radial centrifugal pumps qualitatively and quantitatively is assessed. A numerical study of the flow in a high specific speed radial pump-turbine using steady approaches and the hypothesis of angular periodicity between neighboring blade channels evidences the relation of sudden flow topology changes with an increase of viscous losses, impacting on the energy-discharge characteristic, and thus increasing the risk of unstable operation. When the flow rate drops below a critical threshold, the straight through-flow with flow separation zones attached to the guide vanes changes to an asymmetrical flow. Energy is drawn off the mean flow and dissipated in a large vortex-like structure. Besides flow separation in some diffuser channels, time-dependent numerical simulations of the flow in a double suction pump evidence a flow rate imbalance between both impeller sides interacting with asymmetric flow separation in the diffuser. Viscous losses increase substantially as this imbalance occurs, the resulting segment of positive slope in the energy-discharge characteristic is found for a flow rate sensibly different from measurements. Different modes of rotating stall are identified by transient pressure measurements in a low-specific-speed pump-turbine, showing 3 to 5 zones of separated flow, rotating at 0.016 to 0.028 times impeller rotation rate, depending on discharge. For operating conditions where stall with 4 cells is most pronounced, velocity is measured by Laser-Doppler methods at locations of interest. The velocity field is reconstructed with respect to the passage of stall cells by definition of a stall phase obtained from simultaneous transient pressure measurements. Time-dependent numerical simulation predicting rotating stall with 4 cells shows velocity fields that are in reasonable agreement with the measured velocity fields, but occurring at a sensibly higher flow rate than found from experiments. In consideration of the quantitative shortcomings of the numerical simulation, a novel modelling approach is proposed: Replacing the costly 3-dimensional simulation of the major part of the impeller channels by a 1-dimensional model allows a significant economy in computational resources, allowing an improved modeling for the remainder of the domain at constant computational cost. The model is validated with the challenging cases of rotating stall and impeller side flow rate imbalance. The satisfying coherence of the results with the simulation including the entire impeller channels qualifies this approach for numerous turbomachinery applications. It could also provide improved, time-dependent boundary conditions for draft tube vortex rope simulations at reasonable computational cost. Parameter studies modifying deliberately some quantities of mean flow and turbulence at the modeled boundary surfaces can be implemented in the framework of the method.
