A Social Approach for Target Localization: Simulation and Implementation in the marXbot Robot

Foraging is a common benchmark problem in collective robotics in which a robot (the forager) explores a given environment while collecting items for further deposition at specific locations. A typical real-world application of foraging is garbage collection where robots collect garbage for further disposal in pre-defined locations. This work proposes a method to cooperatively perform the task of finding such locations: instead of using local or global localization strategies relying on pre-installed infrastructure, the proposed approach takes advantage of the knowledge gathered by a population about the localization of the targets. In our approach, robots communicate in an intrinsic way the estimation about how near they are from a target; these estimations are used by neighbour robots for estimating their proximity, and for guiding the navigation of the whole population when looking for these specific areas. We performed several tests in a simulator, and we validated our approach on a population of real robots. For the validation tests we used a mobile robot called marXbot. In both cases (i.e., simulation and implementation on real robots), we found that the proposed approach efficiently guides the robots towards the pre-specified targets while allowing the modulation of their speed.

An important goal of collective robotics is the design of control systems that allow groups of robots to accomplish common tasks by coordinating without centralized control. In this paper, we study how a group of physically assembled robots can display coherent behavior on the basis of a simple neural controller that has access only to local sensory information. This controller is synthesized through artificial evolution in a simulated environment, in order to let the robots display coordinated motion behaviors. The evolved controller proves to be robust enough to allow a smooth transfer from simulation to reality. Additionally, it generalizes to new experimental conditions, such as different sizes/shapes of the group and/or different connection mechanisms. The performance of the neural controller downloaded and tested on real robots is comparable to the results obtained in simulation.

Swarm intelligence, and swarm robotics in particular, are reaching a point where leveraging the potential of communication within an artificial systempromises to uncover newand varied directions for interesting research without compromising the key properties of swarmintelligent systems such as self-organization, scalability, and robustness. However, the physical constraints of using radios in a robotic swarm are hardly obvious, and the intuitive models often used for describing such systems do not always capture them with adequate accuracy. In order to demonstrate this effectively in the classroom, certain tools can be used, including simulation and real robots. Most instructors currently focus on simulation, as it requires significantly less investment of time, money, and maintenance—but to really understand the differences between simulation and reality, it is also necessary to work with the real platforms from time to time. To our knowledge, our coursemay be the only one in the world where individual students are consistently afforded the opportunity to work with a networked multi-robot system on a tabletop. The e-Puck,1 a low-cost small-scale mobile robotic platform designed for educational use, allows us bringing real robotic hardware into the classroom in numbers sufficient to demonstrate and teach swarm-robotic concepts.We present here a custom module for local radio communication as a stackable extension board for the e-Puck, enabling information exchange between robots and also with any other IEEE 802.15.4-compatible devices. Transmission power can be modified in software to yield effective communication ranges as small as fifteen centimeters. This intentionally small range allows us to demonstrate interesting collective behavior based on local information and control in a limited amount of physical space, where ordinary radios would typically result in a completely connected network. Here we show the use of this module facilitating a collective decision among a group of 10 robots.

Performance Benefits of Self-Assembly in a Swarm-Bot

Mobile robots are said to be capable of self-assembly when they can autonomously form physical connections with each other. Despite the recent proliferation of self-assembling systems, little work has been done on using self-assembly to add functional value to a robotic system, and even less on quantifying the contribution of self-assembly to system performance. In this study we demonstrate and quantify the performance benefits of i) acting as a physically larger self-assembled entity, ii) using self-assembly adaptively and iii) making the robots morphologically aware (the self-assembled robots leverage their new connected morphology in a task specific way). In our experiments, two real robots must navigate to a target over a-priori unknown terrain. In some cases the terrain can only be overcome by a self-assembled connected entity. In other cases, the robots can reach the target faster by navigating individually.
