NOMAD - Network of Optimization Modalities in Architectural Design

Two pairs of identical experimentation modules are being developed within the framework of a collaborative initiative named NOMAD – Network of Optimization Modalities in Architectural Design - between the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Performance-Integrated Design (LIPID) and the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST), both at EPFL. NOMAD relates to a series of projects related to the optimization of the building envelope in a sustainability context. Based on comparative evaluations in two climates (cool-temperate versus hot-arid), these projects will most notably rely on a dual infrastructure: the NOMAD modules. These modules will be located in Lausanne, Switzerland and in the Middle East (Ras-Al-Kaimah, United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.). They are currently in design development and will be operational in the fall of 2012 for the launching of the Master in Energy Management and Sustainability Caravans. One pair of modules will be located on the main EPFL campus in Lausanne, Switzerland and the other pair will be installed on the site of the EPFL Middle East campus in Ras-Al-Kaimah, U.A.E. The modules’ dimensions will be 3 m wide x 3 m high x 9 m deep so as to allow deep plan layouts, and include an active insulation skin for temperature and heat exchange control. Having the modules in pairs offers the option either rely on a reliable reference case in any measurement campaign, to hide the measurement setup from the users in field studies, or to conduct two experiments simultaneously to get most out of periods where optimal climate conditions are scarce. This dual climate approach allows us to open up an innovative and original research framework, able to generate new façade concepts with high environmental standards, and to develop bio-climatic strategies based on multiple criteria. This unique dual research facility will thus be particularly adapted to investigate climate-related issues in building technology and to enhance the educational potential in sustainable architecture at EPFL and EPFL Middle East.

The scope of this research includes the development of composite concrete façade elements that are thin, loadbearing and of high thermal performance. The research applies to manufactured precast concrete elements and focuses on improving their structure in terms of their construction but also their cost and environmental impact. During the last four decades, society’s energy efficiency awareness has been steadily growing in everyday life and in scientific circles. The Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology are promoting a plan known as the 2000 Watt Society (Société à 2000 Watts) which would reduce the energy consumption of the country’s inhabitants. In the context of Swiss construction, Minergie type labels are a requirement ensuring improved living conditions at lower energy consumption levels. These new ambitions increase the thermal requirements which in turn lead to the inevitable thickening of the building envelope. In a Swiss urban context, such as the Geneva region in particular, land is increasingly rare and the price of leasable surface continues to rise. As a result, the materials commonly used for insulation are economical but bulky ; they increase the thickness of the façades and significantly reduce the usable surface available for buildings. In an urban context such as this, what is the suitable dimension and fair price of a wall ? The method used was to analyze the strategies that would result in the correct dimensions of high thermal performance walls. Diminishing their width increases the area of livable surface while maintaining the wall’s thermal, static and sustainable standards. The objective was to establish a process for determining the composition of products that carry the Minergie-P and Minergie-Eco label. To this end, several tests and a pilot project for an individual house were carried out using optimum high thermal performance precast concrete walls as a model. The test demonstrated the feasibility of this type of wall. The innovation was to place between the two layers of concrete, a high thermal performance Vacuum Insulated Panel (VIP) type material and a traditional one. This combination allowed optimizing the thickness of the wall while responding to construction constraints. The proportion of the combination of insulation materials was selected according to their thermal performance, environmental impact and price. The goal was to maintain a constant thickness from the stages of project design to its completion. The argument of this dissertation is based on the conviction and the importance to commit to the use of high thermal performance construction materials overall in the future. At present, in the midst of a fossil fuel crisis, this is no longer just an individual concern. Indeed, the scarcity of fossil fuels and global warming are vital and critical problems that can be solved by using appropriate architecture solutions such as heat traps.

Intégration des critères de durabilité dans le processus de conception des constructions temporaires à vocation événementielle

Sustainability is a constant search for balance between the needs and the means implemented, which implies meeting the needs present without compromising those of generations to come. Later generations will indeed imperative to consider. So that their scope for action not be mortgaged by human activities of previous generations, it is necessary to provide some leeway, especially from the perspective of the built environment transmitted by inheritance. Alongside these general theoretical considerations, it is now observed a glaring mismatch between the rapidly changing socio-cultural practices and the very slow renewal of the built environment . Whether in the way to live or work , or occupy constructed in the need for research space flexibility , the frame is characterized by the notion of "impermanence" increasingly important, in contrast with the perennial character commonly accepted and implemented in current practices . Most buildings are built to last, but are part of a society where everything is changing rapidly and so are facing frequent shifting situations between form and function of spaces. In this context, the temporary architecture can therefore be a good potential to seek to meet the challenges of multiple time frames and offer a potential mutation. This architectural approach is thus fully in sustainability concerns mentioned above, since it aims to offer a potential for adaptation rather than fixed solutions. Aware of the extent of the issue and complexity of reflections on the question of the impermanence of the frame, especially in view of the nature of architectural practices, this work focuses specifically on a little explored area that day at the research for which the notion of temporality is short intrinsic data: the field of temporary constructions events vocation. Through an exploratory approach, research methodology convene an archetype of the temporary architectural design to examine it as an object of study that can ideally translate the challenges of a design associated with an approach based on time restricted use. The research first observed in detail these practices sometimes considered at the margin of the architectural discipline. The structured analysis of four representative case helps highlight their limitations in terms of sustainability. part of the research, evaluative approach includes the development of an assessment methodology, specifically adapted to this type of construction. The approach then proposes the development of an alternative solution, which optimizes its multiple performances in a perspective of sustainability and overall quality. Through an approach of "research by the project" an integrated design process (IDP), both interdisciplinary and participatory, is experienced first sketches to detailed development of a prototype. Finally, from the product of this reflection, research in general rises and explores many possibilities of using this new system. This approach allows to demonstrate the potential contribution of multiple functional areas, illustrating what could be the conceptual foundations of an "architecture of the event." The result is a research methodology both "multi-scale" and "multidisciplinary", which demonstrates the great potential for optimizing this type of construction and the need to achieve to grasp the design simultaneously at multiple scales and integrating all stakeholders.

Energy renovation of the built heritage housing based on the living building challenge certification. Case study in Bresca (Spain)

In light of increasing sustainability requirements, one of the challenges related to the heritage building stock consists in finding a balance between preserving the existing architectural character and improving energy efficiency. The project presented in this article has been carried out through a collaborative design process, involving experts from different disciplines (e.g. construction, energy, low-carbon materials, etc.), through a simulation-driven approach integrating both architectural and energy-performance evaluation aspects from the early-design phases of the project. In order to go as far as possible in terms of sustainability, the Living Building Challenge (LBC) label has been taken as a guide, providing a design framework to create regenerative spaces where people connect to daylighting, air, food, nature and community. It aims to obtain self-sufficient buildings from a holistic point of view (e.g. positive-energy building approach, treatment of the used-water onsite, prioritizing low-impact materials to obtain healthy living spaces). The project consists of the complete renovation of a rural home located in the medieval urban fabric of a small village called Bresca in the north of Spain. The initial construction date is unknown, but the house underwent a first basic renovation in 2007. The building consists of a typical farmhouse, well oriented regarding solar exposure, with poorly insulated massive walls and no heating system. The renovation project includes both passive and active strategies, improving thermal insulation of the building envelope and integrating a sunspace that helps to reduce heating and lighting demand, in addition to a photovoltaics (PV) installation with storage system that feeds a high-performance heat pump. This paper focuses on the energy aspects, comparing design results and post-occupancy evaluation in terms of energy consumption/production (energy performance gap). We highlight the high energy performance achieved while surmounting the architectural challenges related to the heritage constraints of the existing building. Results show that between February and March 2019, the house produced 858 and consumed 508 kWh, demonstrating that it is possible to achieve high levels of annual PV coverage ratio while respecting and valuing traditional architecture.
