Unconventional magnetization plateaus in a Shastry-Sutherland spin tube

Résumé

Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and perturbative continuous unitary transformations (PCUTs), we study the magnetization process in a magnetic field for all coupling strengths of a quasi-1D version of the 2D Shastry-Sutherland lattice, a frustrated spin tube made of two orthogonal dimer chains. At small inter-dimer coupling, plateaus in the magnetization appear at 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 3/8, and 1/2. As in 2D, they correspond to a Wigner crystal of triplons. However, close to the boundary of the product singlet phase, plateaus of a new type appear at 1/5 and 3/4. They are stabilized by the localization of bound states of triplons. Their magnetization profile differs significantly from that of single-triplon plateaus and leads to specific NMR signatures. We address the possibility to stabilize such plateaus in further geometries by analyzing small finite clusters using exact diagonalizations and the PCUTs. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2011

Quantum critical scaling for a Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain around saturation

We demonstrate quantum critical scaling for an S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound Cu(C4H4N2)(NO3)(2) in a magnetic field around saturation, by analyzing previously reported magnetization [Y. Kono et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 037202 (2015)], thermal expansion [J. Rohrkamp et al., J. Phys.: Conf. Ser. 200, 012169 (2010)], and NMR relaxation data [H. Kuhne et al., Phys. Rev. B 80, 045110 (2009)]. The scaling of magnetization is demonstrated through collapsing the data for a range of both temperature and field onto a single curve without making any assumption for a theoretical form. The data collapse is subsequently shown to closely follow the theoretically predicted scaling function without any adjustable parameters. Experimental boundaries for the quantum critical region could be drawn from the variable range beyond which the scaled data deviate from the theoretical function. Similarly to the magnetization, quantum critical scaling of the thermal expansion is also demonstrated. Further, the spin dynamics probed via NMR relaxation rate 1/T-1 close to the saturation is shown to follow the theoretically predicted quantum critical behavior as 1/T-1 proportional to T-0.5 persisting up to temperatures as high as k(B)T similar or equal to J, where J is the exchange coupling constant.

We investigate the interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and an external field in spin-1∕2 dimers. For isolated dimers and at low field, we derive simple expressions for the staggered and uniform magnetizations which show that the orientation of the uniform magnetization can deviate significantly from that of the external field. In fact, in the limit where the D vector of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is parallel to the external field, the uniform magnetization actually becomes perpendicular to the field. For larger fields, we show that the staggered magnetization of an isolated dimer has a maximum close to one-half the polarization, with a large maximal value of 0.35gμB in the limit of very small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We investigate the effect of interdimer coupling in the context of ladders with density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) calculations and show that, as long as the values of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and of the exchange interaction are compatible with respect to the development of a staggered magnetization, the simple picture that emerges for isolated dimers is also valid for weakly coupled dimers with minor modifications. The results are compared with torque measurements on Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4.

Magnetic-Field-Induced Bound States in Spin-1/2 Ladders

Motivated by the recently observed intriguing mode splittings in a magnetic field with inelastic neutron scattering in the spin ladder compound (C5H12N)(2) CuBr4 (BPCB), we investigate the nature of the spin ladder excitations using a density matrix renormalization group and analytical arguments. Starting from the fully frustrated ladder, for which we derive the low-energy spectrum, we show that bound states are generically present close to k = 0 in the dynamical structure factor of spin ladders above H-c1, and that they are characterized by a field-independent binding energy and an intensity that grows with H - H-c1. These predictions are shown to explain quantitatively the split modes observed in BPCB.
