Phonon Energy Gaps in the Charged Incommensurate Planes of the Spin-Ladder Sr14Cu24O41 Compound by Raman and Infrared Spectroscopy

The terahertz (THz) excitations in the quantum spin-ladder system Sr14Cu24O41 have been determined along the c axis using THz time-domain, Raman, and infrared spectroscopy. Low-frequency infrared and Raman active modes are observed above and below the charge-ordering temperature T-co similar or equal to 200 K over a narrow interval similar or equal to 1-2 meV (similar or equal to 8-16 cm(-1)). A new infrared mode at similar or equal to 1 meV develops below similar or equal to 100 K. The temperature dependence of these modes shows that they are coupled to the charge-and spin-density-wave correlations in this system. These low-energy features are conjectured to originate in the gapped sliding motion of the chain and ladder subsystems, which are both incommensurate and charged.

Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy Study of the Conductivity of Hole-Transporting Materials

Some redox-active ionic liquids, organic amorphous solids containing electron-donating moieties, and conductive polymers can efficiently transport positive electrical charges. These hole-conducting media find increasing applications in unconventional solar cells and organic light-emitting diodes. Appropriate methods are required to unravel the detailed conduction and trapping mechanisms in these materials as well as to fully understand the interplay of molecular vibrations and charge transport processes. Here we present terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) as a powerful technique, that allows the direct determination of the complex conductivity of hole transporting materials in a contactless, purely optical manner. Beyond the measurement of the conductivity of solid and liquid materials, THz (far infrared) spectroscopy also provides direct information of the librational and vibrational modes coupled to charge transport processes and therefore is invaluable in the study of the mechanism of polaronic transport in matter. Application of this technique is illustrated by examples provided by the study of the ionic liquid 3-methyl-1-propylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide (PMIT FSI) and that of the molecular liquid hole conductor 10-methylphenoxazine. Both systems are of particular interest, as both types of holetransporting media are successfully used as alternatives to solvent-based electrolytes in dye sensitized solar cells

THz time-domain spectroscopy and IR spectroscopy on MoS2

In the increasing research field of 2D materials such as graphene, molybdenum disulfide MoS2 has attracted great interest due to the existence of a direct bandgap in monolayer MoS2, which gives the possibility of achieving MoS2 field-effect transistors or optoelectronic devices. We analyzed by THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) up to 2 THz and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, CVD-obtained MoS2 using either S or H2S gas as a sulfur precursor, grown on a sapphire substrate. From THz-TDS we obtained the transmittance, conductivity, and attenuation. From IR spectroscopy on the same samples, we deduced the transmittance in the IR frequency range. We observed the coherence of both spectroscopic methods. The advantage of the THz-TDS method is that we can get significant parameters related to the sample quality without the need for depositing any electrical contact or sample preparation. Our results show that at high frequencies MoS2 is even better than graphene as a material for optoelectronic devices.
