Local spectroscopy of the Kondo lattice YbAl3: Seeing beyond the surface with scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy

We report on an atomic-scale study of the Kondo lattice compound YbAl3 using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). An analysis of the surface orientation and structure is performed based on STM images containing more than one crystal facet. We compare tunneling spectra acquired on different facets and discuss their relation with the temperature scales observed in measurements of bulk quantities and the states observed in photoemission spectra. On specific facets, we observe strong additional resonances close to the Fermi energy which are not consistent with the characteristic energy scales found in bulk measurements, and which we interpret in terms of a modified Kondo state of the near-surface Ytterbium atoms.

Observation of a two-dimensional electron gas at the surface of annealed SrTiO3 single crystals by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

An extensive surface characterization of hydrofluoric acid (HF) etched and annealed SrTiO3 single crystals, vacuum-annealed below 300 degrees C, reveals the formation of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). A joint scanning tunneling spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction analysis allows us to associate the surface metallic state (characterized by the presence of a nonzero density of states close to the Fermi level) with the low-temperature-annealed highly ordered 1 x 1 reconstructed SrTiO3 surface hosting two-dimensional carriers. Meanwhile, a gap opens in the tunneling spectrum of 2 x 1 reconstructed, high-temperature-annealed surfaces. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy shows that the metallic state is associated with the surface formation of Ti3+. Recently published photoemission data demonstrated the formation of a 2DEG on the surface of cleaved SrTiO3, while scanning tunneling spectroscopy on crystals heated at high temperature revealed gaplike features: Our results can help reconcile this seemingly contradicting phenomenology observed so far by scanning tunneling spectroscopy and photoemission spectroscopy.

Absence of quasiparticles in the photoemission spectra of quasi-one-dimensional Bechgaard salts

We measured typical quasi-one-dimensional organic metals (Bechgaard salts), using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe neither quasiparticle features near the chemical potential nor traces of a Fermi surface. The spectra, indicating a deep pseudogap around the Fermi energy, are incompatible with a Fermi liquid picture. None of the alternative interpretations we explored can fully explain the experimental data.

Interplay of Chemical and Electronic Structure on the Single-Molecule Level in 2D Polymerization

Single layers of covalently linked organic materials in the form of two-dimensional (2D) polymers constitute structures complementary to inorganic 2D materials. The electronic properties of 2D polymers may be manipulated through a deliberate choice of the organic precursors. Here we address the changes in electronic CO structure-from precursor molecule to oligomer by scanning tunneling spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. For this purpose, we introduce the polymerization reaction of 1,3,5-tris(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene via decarboxylation on Cu(111), which is thoroughly characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. We present a comprehensive study of a contamination-free on-surface coupling scheme and study how dehydrogenation, decarboxylation, and polymerization affect the electronic structure on the molecular level.
