Room temperature strong coupling between a microwave oscillator and an ensemble of electron spins

Résumé

We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the possibility to achieve the strong coupling regime at room temperature with a microwave electronic oscillator coupled with an ensemble of electron spins. The coupled system shows bistable behaviour, with a broad hysteresis and sharp transitions. The coupling strength and the hysteresis width can be adjusted through the number of spins in the ensemble, the temperature, and the microwave field strength. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. Mechanical spectroscopy of 18-carat AuCuPd white gold alloys

The mechanical loss and dynamic modulus temperature spectra of two 18-carat white gold alloys, Au58%Cu24%Pd18% without (grade A) and with alloying additions (grade B), were measured in the 400-1000 K temperature range. A peak interpreted as a Zener relaxation peak is found at about 630 K in both alloys. In the as-quenched state the peak shifts to lower temperatures due to excess vacancies, creating a transient peak at 520 K visible only upon the first heating. In grade A, a relaxation peak is observed at 750 K and is attributed to grain boundary relaxation, since it is absent in monocrystalline sample. in the same temperature region, the grade B features a peak with a large hysteresis between heating and cooling. A sharp peak observed in heating at 830 K is accompanied by a strong modulus decrease. In cooling, we observe a peak at 750 K, below which the mechanical loss abruptly decreases, accompanied by a modulus recovery. The peak hysteresis is interpreted as being due to dissolution or precipitation, respectively. The internal friction spectrum is correlated with the alloy's mechanical properties, namely the hardening of the grade B upon tempering at a temperature below the dissolution peak. Polycrystalline specimens of the ferritic-martensitic OPTIMAX A steel have been irradiated on the one hand with neutrons at 523 K to a dose of 2.5 dpa and with 590 MeV protons at ambient temperature and 523 K to doses of about 0.3 and 1 dpa on the other. Charpy tests reveal a shift of the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature from about 190 to 268 K in the neutron-irradiated steel. Proton irradiations at ambient temperature lead to hardening and reduction of tensile ductility of the material. Both phenomena are strongly and positively dependent on dose. After irradiation at 523 K, they appear negligible (at least for the dose of 0.75 dpa). Transmission electron microscopy observations reveal that neutron irradiation leads to the formation of only a few Visible black dots, together with a few faceted cavities, while proton irradiations also produce few visible defect clusters with sizes of about 1-2 nm, with no clear difference in size and density with dose and temperature. As a particular result, from proton irradiations performed at ambient temperature, the embedded carbides become amorphous, while at 523 K they remain crystalline. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Irradiated 304 and 316 stainless steel samples were investigated. The steels were neutron irradiated to 1.5 and 7.5 dpa at 550 K. Similar types of steels were irradiated at 550 K with 590 MeV protons in the PIREX facility at PSI, Switzerland. The doses reached in this case were 0.15 and 0.3 dpa. The stress-strain relationships at different temperatures were measured. The irradiation and deformation microstructures were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Two modes of deformation were found, twinning and channelling, depending on the testing temperature. These results are discussed in terms of deformation mechanisms at different temperatures correlated with radiation hardening. Finally, possible correlations between deformation modes and previous irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) studies are discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
