The Interplay Between Structural and Electronic Degrees of Freedom in Superconductors

More than one hundred years after the discovery of superconductivity in Leiden, the intriguing physics of several unconventional classes of superconductors continue to fascinate and challenge scientists from all over the world. The majority of these compounds belongs to a major class of materials known as strongly correlated systems that exhibit interesting and diverse physical properties, like the high-temperature superconductivity, the Mott-insulator transition, the colossal magnetoresistance or the structurally-driven electronic phase transitions. Rigorous and deep investigations of the electronic properties, as well as their tunability, should lead to new attractive commercial applications. With the use of time-resolved experiments or bulk sensitive techniques, which represent the main subject of this thesis, the electronic and magnetic properties of strongly correlated type-II superconductors and high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors are accessible. These techniques take advantages of the photon tunability in the case of optical pump-probe by allowing one to record the transient response of the material over the whole visible spectrum, or in the case of X-ray diffraction, the tunability of the synchrotron radiation thanks to the slicing operating at the SLS (Swiss Light Source) in Villigen, Switzerland. Cryo-LTEM allows one to work across the (H ,T ) phase diagram of type-II superconductors, thus enabling the study of the coexistence between normal and superconducting state by careful regulation of the applied magnetic field near the specimen. The Chapter 1 (1) is a general introduction dedicated to the historical evolution of our understanding of superconductivity, according to the theories and general concepts used and developed is this thesis. Chapter 2 (3) is dedicated to the experimental techniques. A careful description of the different setups, as well as a theoretical development needed for the calculations is presented. In Chapter 3 (4), the investigation of magnesium diboride superconductor by means of cryo-LTEM is presented. By observing the field-dependent vortex lattices in this system and performing calculations using the theoretical frameworks developed by Ginzburg-Landau and Abrikosov, I found that this compound belongs to the type-II family [1], and not to the novel type 1.5 class of superconductor. In Chapter 4 (5), I present the investigation related the charge density waves compound Lu5Ir4Si10. The use of ultrafast time-resolved optical pump-probe experiments, coupled with ab-anitio theoretical calculations of the electron-phonon coupling and the electronic structure, permits to shine new light on the nature of this transition which we identified as a structurally-driven Peierls transition [2]. The Chapter 5 (6) is dedicated to the investigation of the high-temperature copper-oxide superconductor, La2−x Srx CuO4, for different doping levels; the experiment was carrying out at the SLS on the Micro-XAS beamline, By using a transient temperature model and comparing our experimental results with temperature-dependent density of states calculations, we report on the electronic temperature dependence of the electron-phonon coupling constant (submitted to Phys. Rev. B).

Thermopower as a Unique Tool to Probe Quantum Phase Transitions

In my thesis, transport measurements such as resistivity and, more importantly, thermopower S, were used to explore the phase diagram of bad metals. Bad metals are electronically correlated systems whose ground state lies close to a quantum phase transition. By tuning the control parameters, such as temperature (T ), magnetic field (B), hydrostatic pressure (p) or chemical substitution (x), we can induce phase transitions between the various electronic, magnetic and structural phases. Here, the thermopower is presented as a unique tool for probing quantum phase transition because it is a measure of the entropy of conducting electrons. The main part of the thesis is dedicated to the study of Fe-based superconductors (FeSC) discovered in 2008. Their parent compound has an antiferromagnetic (AF) ground state, where the itinerant electrons form a spin-density wave (SDW), a periodic modulation of spin density. This coincides or is preceded by a structural, tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition. The nesting between the electron and hole Fermi surface is believed to be the driving mechanism for the SDW state. By changing the structural or chemical properties the AF ground state of FeSC is suppressed, giving way to superconductivity (SC). The remaining antiferromagnetic fluctuations above the transition can provide a glue for SC pairing. Here, the analysis of the thermopower S/T of BaFe1−xCoxAs2 (BFCA) in the x-T phase diagram shows the signatures of the spin fluctuation which have a dome-like dependence and follow the trend of superconducting Tc . The logarithmic increase of S/T upon decreasing T is ascribed to the proximity of the spin-density-wave quantum critical point. It can be understood as an increase of entropy due to the incommensurate AF spin fluctuations. We can ascribe the high values of thermopower in BFCA at intermediate- and room-temperatures to the influence of low-T quantum criticality. To probe the response of the electronic system in FeSC to structural changes, we performed measurements under pressure of the parent compound BaFe2As2 (BFA), the SC electron-doped BFCA, and hole-doped Ba1−xKxFe2As2 (BKFA). In the parent compound pressure suppresses the structural/SDW transition, similar to the effect of doping. For doped systems, in order to describe the behavior of thermopower in the high-T range (above 100K) we used a semi-metallic two-band model which was fitted to the data in order to extract the pressure dependence of the band parameters. In both doping cases the effect of pressure was similar, an increase of the band overlap and of the effective number of charge carriers. With this model we can explain the high-T , x and p dependence of thermopower in both electron- and hole-doped BFA. In a structurally simpler Fe-chalcogenide Fe1+yTe1−xSex compound, the excess of Fe has a Kondo-like influence on the charge carriers which dramatically changes the physics of the normal state. To probe the normal state, pressure, doping, magnetic Fe-excess concentration (y) and temperature were used as control parameters. At low-T a characteristic upturn of resistivity (ρmag ) is observed, followed by an increase of thermopower (Smag ), which we identify as the magnetic contribution caused by the spin-flip scattering events. Increasing the y resulted in an increase of ρmag , and a decrease of Smag , which is in agreement with the behavior of canonical Kondo-systems. Pressure suppresses the magnetic contribution to transport, thus increasing the itinerancy of the system. MnSi is another system in which the sensitivity of thermopower to entropy brings new information related to the complex magnetic structure. Pressure was used to drive the system from a helically ordered, canonical Fermi-liquid (FL) phase with T 2-resistivity to the intrinsically disordered, non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) phase above pc with T3/2-dependence. Our contour plot of S/T demonstrated how powerful the thermopower technique is, by reproducing the whole previously established T -p phase diagram. At the phase transition from the magnetically-ordered FL phase to the disordered NFL, the thermopower is dramatically enhanced. We bring useful information about the mysterious partial order (PO) phase inside the NFL phase, previously detected only by neutron scattering. The fluctuating helices scenario can describe the observed increase of entropy/thermopower in the PO phase. At ambient pressure, close to the helical transition of MnSi, a moderate magnetic field can stabilize the skyrmion lattice - the lattice of topological magnetic whirls, vortices. We observe a signature of the skyrmion lattice as a minute drop in thermopower. It is located exactly in the same region of the T − B phase diagram where an increase in magnetoresistance and Hall effect was reported previously. This feature originates from the additional scattering of conducting electrons on magnetic vortices, while the change in S is dominated by the decrease of entropy as the stable skyrmion lattice is formed. Overall, resistivity was used to confirm the established phase diagram, while thermopower, as an interesting and not sufficiently understood technique, was used to probe the sensitive changes of the charge carriers at the Fermi surface. We explored various phases showing how useful thermopower is to probe the entropy of electronic system on the verge of quantum phase transition.

The growth by laser ablation and electronic properties of thin cuprate films

In my thesis work I have concentrated on the growth and the in-depth analysis of high temperature superconducting thin films with the central aim to elucidate their electronic properties, predominantly by in-situ angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). I have used two somewhat complementary approaches and two laser ablation set-ups. The first one, developed previously in Wisconsin, was used mainly for studies of strained La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) with a transfer to the Scienta analyzer via an appropriate suitcase. The second one, at the EPFL, where I have built a new pulsed laser deposition (PLD) system, was used to optimize the growth of Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO4 (Bi-2201) and study in-situ ARPES. In-situ ARPES is the most direct tool to probe the electronic structure. We performed it at the Synchrotron Radiation Center (SRC, University of Wisconsin), where we used the aforementioned experimental set-up consisting in a dedicated PLD system coupled with the SCIENTA beamline. The sample transfer procedure assures that the surface quality is preserved on the way to the SCIENTA analyzer. There we studied in detail the effect of strain in LSCO thin films. In a previous work the in-plane compressive strain was studied and the main result was that the Fermi surface (FS) topology changed from hole-like to electron-like. The tensile strained films showed completely different results. ARPES analysis show evidence for a 3-dimensional (3D) electronic dispersion relation in contrast to the strictly 2-dimensional (2D) dispersion observed in all other studied LSCO films. In this thesis this result has been confirmed mapping the FS at different photon energies. We found that the strain related to the thickness of the films, is playing an important role in inducing a 3D dispersion. Furthermore, the 3D parameters, evolve according to the level of strain. Moreover, we observe a staircase structure for different photon energies, revealing both the 3D nature of the electronic dispersion and the quantization of the electron wave vector along the direction normal to the film surface. Taking advantage of the wavevector quantization we were able to determine directly the band parameters and map the FS without using the nearly-free-electron approximation (NFEA). Moreover, introducing an effective anisotropic photoelectron effective mass, related to the local structure of the excited band, improves the use of the NFEA for single photon energy measurements. In parallel, I have built an improved PLD system at the EPFL which can be connected to the SCIENTA analyzer, and which enables us to perform in-situ ARPES measurements at any time rather than only during allocated beamtimes at the synchrotron. We also produced our own targets for the laser ablation and all the films were fully characterized at the EPFL performing X-ray diffraction (XRD), resistivity and magnetic measurements. I analyzed in detail the growth mechanism of Bi-2201 and I investigated the presence of random intergrowths. We developed a model to explain the presence of these polytypes and studied their presence as a function of the deposition parameters and the annealing treatment. The model predicts a very particular spatial distribution of defects: a Markovian-like sequence of displacements along the grow direction, as well as a two-component in-plane correlation function, characteristic of self-organized intercalates. We varied the growth conditions in order to study the presence of intergrowths and to produce single-phase samples. Subsequently, we performed in-situ photoemission experiments on thin films of Bi-2201 films free from intergrowths and we analyzed their FS. This method is successful and can be extended to other related oxide films.

Study of novel electronic conductors

This thesis presents the results of a concerted effort to understand the complex array of physical properties exhibited by the BaVS3 family of materials. As a 3d1 system, BaVS3 displays a unique collection of correlation-driven phenomena, including a metal-insulator transition driven by spin-density waves and or charge-density waves as well as a pressure-dependent crossover between the non-Fermi-liquid and Fermi-liquid behaviors. In an attempt to better understand these and many other properties, we have undertaken a systematic experimental study of BaVS3 and related compounds. The primary measurements carried out were those of the transport properties, resistivity and thermoelectric power (TEP). Through the construction of specialized measuring apparatuses, we were able to measure simultaneously these transport properties under conditions of variable temperature (from 2 to 600 K), pressure (up to 3 GPa) and magnetic field (up to 12 T). At ambient pressure and in the range of 250 to 600K, BaVS3 shows nearly isotropic but poor metallic behavior with linear temperature dependences of resistivity and TEP and a Curie-like magnetic susceptibility. The nearly isotropic conductivity contrasts with the 1D 2kF fluctuations observed by lowering the temperature below 250 K (at which the first Jahn-Teller structural phase transition occurs) deep in the metallic phase. The fluctuations reveal the 1D aspects of the electronic character, originating from the chain like structure of the material. The salient feature of BaVS3 at ambient pressure is the second order metal-to-insulator (MI) transition at TMI = 69 K, accompanied by the tetramerization (doubling of the 2V unit cell in the chain direction). In addition to the transport measurements, the strong changes in the electrical and magnetic properties of the system around TMI were followed by magnetic susceptibility, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and frequency-dependent conductivity. By increasing the pressure, the three-dimensionality of BaVS3 is enhanced and the MI phase transition is suppressed to lower temperatures. TEP and magneto TEP measurements in this pressure range revealed the existence of polarons and of spin fluctuations in the metallic phase. The latter can be identified as precursors to the MI transition. Around 1.8 GPa, where TMI ~15 K, the system enters a strongly fluctuating regime, highly sensitive to the magnetic field, the amplitude and the frequency of the measuring current and to a further increase of the pressure. Closely related to these features, the phase boundary collapses and a hysteretic behavior appears in the transport properties and their magnetic-field-dependent counterparts. At a critical pressure of ~2 GPa, a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) state arises (with n~1.5 in the Tn resistivity law between 1 and 15 K) in relation to the proximate Quantum Critical Point. The p-H-T phase diagram of BaVS3 in this region has been explored in some detail with particular emphasis placed upon the relevance of the spin degrees of freedom (on the insulator side) and the role of quantum fluctuations above the critical pressure. Finally, as the pressure is increased further, the conventional Fermi-liquid exponent of n = 2 is obtained. In order to delve further into the subtleties of the MI transition and the NFL behavior, a comparative study was carried out on the sister compounds Bax-1SrxVS3 and BaVS3 and on sulfur-deficient BaVS3. From this study it became apparent that the imposed chemical substitution manifests itself as an additional effective pressure. The inherent disorder of these samples was observed to affect the NFL behavior by reducing the exponent n towards a value of 1, while the apparent ferromagnetic order below 15 K was seemingly independent of pressure. All the observed features are consistent with a relatively simple two-band tight-binding, vanadium-based, model consisting of a wide quasi one-dimensional band hybridized with a rather isotropic narrow band. Within this context, it is concluded that the MI transition is controlled by the Coulomb-interacting electrons of the wide quasi one-dimensional band. Based on this model a new description of the NFL regime has been proposed.
