Pressure drop data and prediction method for enhanced external boiling tube bundles with R-134a and R-236fa

The pressure drops of external flow over enhanced tube bundles were experimentally obtained at both adiabatic and diabatic conditions using R-134a and R-236fa as test fluids. The tests were carried out at saturation temperatures of 5 and 15 degrees C, mass fluxes from 4 to 40 kg 1m(-2) s(-1), heat fluxes from 15 to 70 kW m(-2) and inlet vapour qualities ranging from 10% to 90%. The frictional pressure drop was found to be primarily a function of mass flux and vapour quality. After comparisons were made with prediction methods in literature a new pressure drop prediction method was proposed for adiabatic and diabatic conditions. The proposed method is based on local measurements (4 and 8 tube rows) and flow conditions (evaluated per tube pitch) and the prediction method is well adapted to local incremental implementation for flooded evaporator design. Falling film evaporation on enhanced tubes, part 1: Experimental results for pool boiling, onset-of-dryout and falling film evaporation

Horizontal falling film evaporators have the potential of displacing flooded evaporators as the standard in the refrigeration industry due to compelling advantages, such as smaller refrigerant charge and lower pressure drop. However, there is a need to improve the understanding of falling film evaporation mechanisms to provide accurate thermal design methods. In this work, falling film evaporation measurements on a single tube, a vertical row of ten horizontal tubes and a small tube bundle with three rows of 10 tubes each are presented. Two enhanced boiling tubes, the Wolverine Turbo-B5 and the Wieland Gewa-B5, were tested using R-134a and R-236fa. The tests were carried out at a saturation temperature of T-sat = 5 degrees C, film Reynolds numbers ranging from 0 to 3000, and heat fluxes between 15 and 90 kW m(-2) in pool boiling and falling film configurations. Plate heat exchangers are adopted in many domestic and industrial applications, such as ventilation, air conditioning, evaporation or condensation process, heat pumps and cooling of hydrodynamic circuits in engines. In the present thesis, an extensive experimental study to characterize thermal and hydraulic performance of a compact plate heat exchanger has been carried out and then follow up with proposition of new prediction methods for single-phase and evaporating flows in the plate¿s channels, in the form of general correlations that include large additional databases culled from the literature. Specifically, upward single-phase flow and flow boiling heat transfer of low pressure liquid refrigerants were investigated within a plate heat exchanger prototype fabricated with 1 mm pressing depth and chevron angle of 65°. High spatial and temporal resolution infrared measurements were implemented to obtain local (pixel-by-pixel) heat transfer coefficients and frictional pressure drops. Single-phase experiments were carried out for Reynolds numbers ranging from 34 to 1615 and Prandtl numbers from 4.9 until 6.5, and the associated effect of the main involved parameters on the thermal and hydraulic performance was analyzed in detail. Several of the most quoted prediction methods available in the literature were statistically evaluated against the present heat transfer and pressure drop database and a new models were proposed to predict mean and local thermal and hydraulic performance of the present compact plate heat exchanger. Two-phase experiments were carried out for mass fluxes ranging from 10 kgm-2s-1 to 85 kgm-2s-1, imposed heat fluxes from 225 Wm-2 to 4100 Wm-2, saturation temperatures from 19°C to 35°C and vapor qualities from 0.05 to 0.90. The heat transfer coefficient increased with mass flux, heat flux and saturation temperature (system pressure) whilst the frictional pressure drop rose with mass flux and vapor quality but decreased with saturation temperature. Based on local infrared measurements, a new correlation for predicting local frictional pressure gradient through the test section was proposed. Next, a wide experimental databank was culled from thirteen literature research studies, which investigated flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase frictional pressure drop within chevron plate heat exchangers. The database was first adopted to validate the predicted capabilities of 29 literature models, and then utilized to provide the new prediction methods to evaluate local heat transfer coefficients and frictional pressure gradient. These new models were developed from 1903 heat transfer and 1513 frictional pressure drop data points (3416 total) and were proved to work better over a very wide range of operating conditions, plate designs and fluids (including ammonia). The general flow boiling prediction methods have been programmed into a simulation code to analyze local thermal and hydraulic performance of the plate heat exchangers over a large range of test conditions. The simulation results were then validated against independent experimental database from literature, resulting in very good agreement between each other. The present simulation code represents a powerful tool to be used for practical applications by the thermal engineers in order to design and rate commercial plate heat exchangers.

Experimental investigation on flow boiling pressure drop and heat transfer of R1233zd(E) in a multi-microchannel evaporator

An experimental study on flow boiling pressure drop and heat transfer of a new environmentally friendly refrigerant R1233zd(E), in a parallel multi-microchannel evaporator was carried out. The silicon microchannels evaporator was 10 mm long and 10 mm wide, having 67 parallel channels, each 100 x 100 mu m(2), separated by a fin with a thickness of 50 mu m. Upstream of each channel, a micro orifice was placed to stabilize the two-phase flow and to obtain good flow distribution. The operating conditions for flow boiling tests were: mass fluxes from 500 to 2750 kg m(-2) S-1, heat fluxes from 6 to 50 W cm(-2), inlet subcooling of 5.8 K, and a nominal outlet saturation temperature of 35 degrees C for stable flow boiling. The test section's backside base temperatures were measured by an infrared (IR) camera. The stable flow boiling data without back flow was selected through flow visualization recorded by a highspeed camera coupled with a microscope. These data were then used to assess the applicability of existing two-phase pressure drop models, and to further develop a new empirical model suitable for the high mass flux operating conditions. This new pressure drop model was used to predict the local fluid temperature for the further heat transfer data identification. The fine-resolution local heat transfer coefficients were obtained by solving the three-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem. The experimental results showed that in the saturated flow boiling region the local heat transfer coefficient first decreased moderately in the very low vapor quality region (x < 0.05), then increased significantly but monotonically along the flow direction. The fine-resolution local heat transfer data at the saturated flow boiling region were compared with two groups of heat transfer correlations. The first one considered the flow boiling mechanism occurring in muliti-microchannels as a combination of nucleate boiling and forced convection boiling, while the other one associated this mechanism to liquid thin film evaporation, thus indicating a controversy. It is found that the flow pattern based model belonging to the second group yielded the best agreement with the experimental data, predicting 92.0% of this new database within 30%.
