A combination between the reduced basis method and the ANOVA expansion: On the computation of sensitivity indices

We consider a method to efficiently evaluate in a real-time context an output based on the numerical solution of a partial differential equation depending on a large number of parameters. We state a result allowing to improve the computational performance of a three-step RB-ANOVA-RB method. This is a combination of the reduced basis (RB) method and the analysis of variations (ANOVA) expansion, aiming at compressing the parameter space without affecting the accuracy of the output. The idea of this method is to compute a first (coarse) RB approximation of the output of interest involving all the parameter components, but with a large tolerance on the a posteriori error estimate; then, we evaluate the ANOVA expansion of the output and freeze the least important parameter components; finally, considering a restricted model involving just the retained parameter components, we compute a second (fine) RB approximation with a smaller tolerance on the a posteriori error estimate. The fine RB approximation entails lower computational costs than the coarse one, because of the reduction of parameter dimensionality. Our result provides a criterion to avoid the computation of those terms in the ANOVA expansion that are related to the interaction between parameters in the bilinear form, thus making the RB-ANOVA-RB procedure computationally more feasible. Computational fluid dynamics for naval engineering problems

The subject of this thesis is the numerical simulation of viscous free-surface flows in naval engineering applications. State-of-the-art numerical methods based on the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations are used to predict the flow around different classes of boats. We investigate the role of the Computational Fluid Dynamics in the design of racing boats, such as America's Cup yachts and Olympic class rowing hull. The mathematical models describing the different aspects of the physical problem, as well as the numerical methods adopted for their solution, are introduced and critically discussed. The different phases of the overall numerical simulation procedure, from grid generation through the solution of the flow equations to the post-processing of the results, are described. We present the numerical simulations that have been performed to investigate the role of different design parameters in the conception of America's Cup yachts and we describe how the results obtained from the simulations are integrated into the overall design process. The free-surface flow around an Olympic rowing boat is also considered. We propose a simplified approach to take into account the effect of the boat dynamics in the prediction of the hydrodynamic forces acting on the boat. Based on the results of the simulations, we propose a new design concept and we investigate its potential benefits on the boat performances. One of the aspects that is found to be not completely satisfactory, within the standard numerical methods adopted, is the modelling of complex free-surface flows. The second part of this thesis is devoted to a more theoretical and methodological investigation of this aspect. In particular, we present and analyse a new numerical method based on the level set approach for the solution of two-fluid flows. The numerical scheme based on a finite element discretization is introduced and different critical aspects of its implementation are discussed. In particular, we present and analyse a new technique for the stabilization of the advection equation associated to the level set problem. Moreover, we propose a new reinitialization procedure for the level set function which plays a crucial role in the accuracy of the algorithm. The convergence properties of this procedure are analysed and comparisons with more standard approaches are presented. Finally, the proposed method has been used to solve a variety of test cases concerning time dependent two-fluid viscous flows. The results of the simulation are presented and discussed.

Modélisation mathématique et simulation numérique des phénomènes dynamiques et thermiques apparaissant dans un glacier

In this work, two problems linked to glacier modeling are investigated. We propose an optimisation method for studying the flow of the ice and we present a numerical study about glacier thermal phenomena. In the first chapter of this thesis, we expose the models of these two problems. On one hand, we note that the boundary conditions on the bedrock are misunderstood, which explains it is difficult to obtain an accurate simulation of the motion of the ice. Also we establish a mathematical model where the bedrock boundary conditions depend on a control parameter. The aim of this study is to minimize a cost functional describing the difference between the computed velocity at the surface and the measure done. We study the cost functional with respect to the control parameter and we detail an optimisation method to solve the optimal control problem. On the other hand, we introduce two thermodynamical model governing the temperature and the water content field. The models correspond to a Stefan problem for the temperature and a convection-diffusion equation for the water content. The second chapter deals with the numerical resolution of the optimisation problem. First, a Finite Element Method (FEM) is described to solve the partial differential equations. Then, the algorithms used for the optimal control problem are detailed. Finally, this techniques are applied on two glaciers : Griesgletcher for 2D and Storglaciaren for 3D. The third chapter deals with the numerical resolution of the temperature and the water content models. A FEM is used for each problem. Concerning the temperature problem, the Stefan problem is numerically solved and the results allow to detect a free surface between the temperated ice and the cold ice. The water content field is also simulated. Numerical results are discussed on the Storglaciaren.
