Study of J/psi production and cold nuclear matter effects in pPb collisions at root S-NN=5 TeV

The production of J/psi mesons with rapidity 1.5 < y < 4.0 or 5.0 < y < 2.5 and transverse momentum PT < 14 GeV/e is studied with the LHCb detector in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy, root(NN)-N-S = 5 TeV. The J/psi mesons are reconstructed using the dimuon decay mode. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.6 nb-1. For the first time the nuclear modification factor and forward-backward production ratio are determined separately for prompt J/psi mesons and J/psi from b-hadron decays. Clear suppression of prompt J/psi production with respect to proton-proton collisions at large rapidity is observed, while the production of J/psi from b-hadron decays is less suppressed. These results show good agreement with available theoretical predictions. The measurement shows that cold nuclear matter effects are important for interpretations of the related quark-gluon plasma signatures in heavy-ion collisions.

The production of J/psi mesons in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The differential cross-section for prompt J/psi production is measured as a function of the J/psi transverse momentum p(T) and rapidity y in the fiducial region p(T) is an element of [0; 14] GeV/c and y is an element of [2.0; 4.5]. The differential cross-section and fraction of J/psi from b-hadron decays are also measured in the same p(T) and y ranges. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2 pb(-1). The measured cross-sections integrated over the fiducial region are 10.52 +/- 0.04 +/- 1.40(-2.20)(+1.64) mu b for prompt J/psi production and 1.14 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.16 mu b for J/psi from b-hadron decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The prompt J/psi production cross-section is obtained assuming no J/psi polarisation and the third error indicates the acceptance uncertainty due to this assumption.

The cross-sections of.(2S) meson production in proton-proton collisions at v s = 13 TeV are measured with a data sample collected by the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 275 pb-1. The production cross-sections for prompt.(2S) mesons and those for.(2S) mesons from b-hadron decays (.(2S)-from-b) are determined as functions of the transverse momentum, pT, and the rapidity, y, of the.(2S) meson in the kinematic range 2 < pT < 20 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The production cross-sections integrated over this kinematic region are s(prompt.(2S), 13 TeV) = 1.430 +/- 0.005 (stat) +/- 0.099 (syst) mu b, s(.(2S)-from-b, 13 TeV) = 0.426 +/- 0.002 (stat) +/- 0.030 (syst) mu b. A new measurement of.(2S) production cross-sections in pp collisions at v s = 7 TeV is also performed using data collected in 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 614 pb-1. The integrated production cross-sections in the kinematic range 3.5 < pT < 14 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5 are s(prompt.(2S), 7 TeV) = 0.471 +/- 0.001 (stat) +/- 0.025 (syst) mu b, s(.(2S)-from-b, 7 TeV) = 0.126 +/- 0.001 (stat) +/- 0.008 (syst) mu b. All results show reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations.

Measurements of b hadron production ratios in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 3 pb(-1) are presented. We study the ratios of strange B meson to light B meson production f(s)/(f(u) + f(d)) and Lambda(0)(b) baryon to light B meson production f(Lambda b)/(f(u) + f(d)) as a function of the charmed hadron-muon pair transverse momentum p(T) and the b hadron pseudorapidity eta, for p(T) between 0 and 14 GeV and eta between 2 and 5. We find that f(s)/(f(u) + f(d)) is consistent with being independent of p(T) and eta, and we determine f(s)/(f(u) + f(d)) = 0.134 +/- 0.004(-0.010)(+0.011), where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The corresponding ratio f(Lambda b)/(f(u) + f(d)) is found to be dependent upon the transverse momentum of the charmed hadron-muon pair, f(Lambda b)/(f(u) + f(d)) = (0.404 +/- 0.017(stat)+/- 0.027(syst)+/-0.105(Br)) x [1-(0.031 +/- 0.004(sta)+/-0.003(syst) x p(T)(GeV)], where Br reflects an absolute scale uncertainty due to the poorly known branching fraction B(Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+). We extract the ratio of strange B meson to light neutral B meson production f(s)/f(d) by averaging the result reported here with two previous measurements derived from the relative abundances of (B) over bar (0)(s) -> D-s(+) pi(-) to (B) over bar (0) -> D+K- and (B) over bar (0) -> D+ pi(-). We obtain f(s)/f(d) = 0.267(-0.020)(+0.021).
