Comparative Study of Post-tensioned Glass Beams with Bonded Tendons

This paper explores the system of laminated annealed glass beams post-tensioned through stainless steel tendons bonded to the lower glass edge. The tendons are first pre-tensioned and then adhesively bonded to the glass. The compressive pre-stress applied by the tendon increases the fracture strength of the beam; in case of glass fracture, the steel tendon provides ductility enhancing the post-fracture behaviour of the beam. In order to explore the optimal adhesive properties for such application, three types of structural adhesives were selected and applied in a post-tensioned glass beam system. The selected adhesives cover a range of stiffness from semi-rigid to rigid. Simple laminated glass beams were post-tensioned with a 15 kN force applied through the tendons and subsequently tested in four-point bending. The results show a structural response strongly dependent on the properties of the adhesive. While the application of pre-tension through stiffer adhesives significantly increased the initial fracture strength of the beams, an immediate loss of pre-stress was observed with the most flexible adhesive. Nevertheless, all the beams showed, to a varying extent, ductile postfracture behaviour and reached ultimate failure loads above the initial fracture load.

Flexural behaviour of post-tensioned glass beams: Experimental and analytical study of three beam typologies

The concept of post-tensioned glass beams builds on the concrete analogy of the reinforced glass beams. By additionally prestressing the reinforcement in a post-tensioned system, a compressive pre-stress is applied on the glass, enhancing the initial fracture resistance in bending. This paper presents three post-tensioned beam systems tested in four-point bending. The effects of both adhesive bonding and mechanical anchoring of tendons are explored in order to define an optimised beam system which can provide a significant level of compressive pre-stress and maximise the efficient use of material. The tests demonstrate the feasibility of post-tensioning by providing a substantial level of additional load capacity and redundancy to commonly applied laminated glass beams. Several specimens have demonstrated premature failure governed by lateral-torsional buckling or by shear. Since glass beams are generally not strengthened through transversal reinforcement, as concrete elements, further investigation of the mechanism of shear failure is particularly important. Analytical models, based on the pre-stressed concrete theory, provide expressions for determination of the initial fracture resistance, initial stiffness and ultimate flexural capacity. Compared with the experimental results, the models provide close prediction values for the initial fracture loads, while the predictions of the initial stiffness and ultimate post-fracture load capacity show less consistency. Closer prediction requires a better understanding of the effect of specific anchoring, the level of composite action and the post-fracture behaviour of laminated glass (including long-term and temperature effects).

Tragverhalten und Bemessung von Holz-Glas-Verbundträgern unter Berücksichtigung der Eigenspannungen im Glas

The construction principles of "Timber-Glass-Composite-Girders" demand practical and theoretical research to ensure reliable designs. Toward this objective the mathematical description of load-bearing and the non-rigid bond is the subject of this work, i.e. to define the contributing parameters for the design of these girders. The non-rigid-bond of the adhesive joint is of great importance because of its influence on the load-bearing of the system as a whole. The loading of girders is dominated by permanent forces thus leading to the obligation of knowing the long-term behaviour of the system and its components. The definition of the characteristic values, taking into account the long-term load-bearing, is an intrinsic part of this investigation. It can be shown that the load-bearing of the girders depends on the fracture of the glass panes. The properties of glass-fractures are a function of the residual internal prestresses due to the heat-strengthening of the panes. The load-bearing, particularly the post-cracked behaviour, changes with respect to the intensity of these internal prestresses. The timber is able to reinforce the cracked glass, leading to a ductile load-bearing behaviour as in the girders, with a dependency upon the size of the remaining fractures. A model based on the differential equations of the non-rigid bond is defined in order to calculate the loading-peaks of the adhesive joint and the material loading itself. The characteristic values of the non-rigid bond, such as the number and distances between cracks and the load introducing length, were evaluated in tests on composite slabs and small scale girders. The existing calculation models which take into account non-rigid bonding were modified to adapt the influence of the width and thickness of the adhesive joint. In order to calculate the stressing of the material the existing calculation models were adapted to calculate the post-cracked situation. The load-bearing behaviour of glass-panes bent with respect to its strong neutral axis needs other safety-considerations than panes, bent off their plane. It is shown that the existing safety considerations subject to the use of glass can not easily be adapted onto the composite girders. The bending with respect to the strong neutral axis and the reinforcement of the glass of the timber demands a different hypothesis to adapt the fractural mechanical analysis and to establish a safe limit conception. This is part of the performed research of this document. The following descriptions present briefly the obtained results: Depending on the quality of the glass (residual stresses due to heat-strengthening, e.g. annealed glass, heat-strengthened glass, fully tempered glass), the ductility and the mode of failure of the girders does change. As a result of its failure mode, annealed glass without internal prestresses offers the highest remaining load-carrying potential after the first crack has appeared. This ductility and thus the structural safety, diminishes with an increasing degree of internal prestressing due to thermal treatment. Heat-strengthened glass (with various degrees of prestressing, various residual stresses) shows a decrease in remaining load-carrying capacity with an increasing degree of prestressing until it fails in a brittle mode as fully toughened glass does. This has to be well considered in respect to safety considerations. Girders with panes made of glass having internal residual stresses due to heat strengthening below 50N/mm2 are considered to collapse ductily, residual stresses bigger than 50N/mm2 cause brittle failure. The effective stiffness of the girders decreases under permanent loads in function of the bondage. Both, timber and adhesive take part in this decrease; the influence of both of the involved materials has been defined. Since the design of conventional glass constructions which uses the concept of principle stresses cannot be adapted, unidirectional shear stresses had to be determined for the shear strength of glass, which is defined as 25N/mm2 for annealed glass. The characteristic values of the adhesive to define the non-rigid bonds have been determined, likewise the influence of the width and thickness of the adhesive joint. The load introducing length, the distances between cracks and the number of cracks are defined with tests on composite slabs. A model to describe the theoretical bond with the defined parameters based on the differential equations was developed. This model allows the calculation of the material stressing at the load introduction and on both sides of a crack. To calculate the stressing of glass and timber existing calculation models which take into account non-rigid bonding were modified to adapt the influence of the width and thickness of the adhesive joint. In order to calculate the stressing of the material the existing calculation models were adapted to calculate the post-cracked situation. The safety factors for the influences of the glass surface, environmental conditions, load duration and the parameters of fracture mechanical analysis as developed as they are known for semi-probabilistic safety concepts for glass constructions cannot easily be adopted. The bending with respect to the strong neutral axis demands a different hypothesis in order to adapt the fractural mechanical analysis and to develop the safety parameters. For the reliable design of timber-glass-composite-girders a contribution to the appropriate use of probabilistic, semi-probabilistic and deterministic safety concepts are given. A realised construction (Hotel "Palafitte" in Monruz (NE)) shows an example and the experience made in designing girders.

Damage evolution in coated cemented carbides under compressive contact loads

This work deals principally with two important issues and their interrelation: the evolution of damage in coated cemented carbide tools used for cold forming, and the assessment of mechanical behavior of cemented carbides under compressive contact loads. Damage evolution in ironing tools is qualitatively investigated by planar and cross-sectional microscopical observations. Several mechanisms of damage are identified by taking into account the circumferential distribution along the surface of the ironing tools: coating wear and/ fracture, plastic deformation and fracture of the substrate. In the context of damage location in the substrate, the emphasis is put on the study of damage following all processing steps in substrate and coating preparation. This analysis aims at determining whether the substrate is weakened or not by the mechanical and chemical pre-treatment prior to coating. Spherical indentation testing is used as an experimental procedure to reproduce the compression stress state during cold forming. Large indenter tips (300 microns) are employed for testing cemented carbides in an effort to minimize the effects of material structural inhomogeneities. The behavior of cemented carbides under compressive loads is governed by the reversibility of deformation induced by indentation. A unique feature revealed by analysis of experimental load-displacement indentation curves is the positive energy balance, in that a gain of energy is evidenced after a loading-unloading cycle. Two hypotheses are developed for interpreting such a behavior: the strain induced martensitic transformation of the cobalt ductile phase and the thermal residual stresses in the composite. Substrate weakening subsequent to mechanical and chemical pretreatment prior to coating is expected to have a particular role on the indentation behavior of cemented carbides. The impact of substrate damage on the indentation parameters is identified by a parametric study using finite element simulations in which the damage is considered uniform. In reality, the damage distribution over the surface is rather irregular. In this context, a statistical approach is used for assessment of the material indentation parameters. The failure of coating/substrate systems under compressive contact loads is investigated by finite element simulations. The first failure events are identified by considering that system failure occurs either by substrate plastic deformation or coating fracture. The response of coated systems to spherical indentation is synthesized in damage diagrams which can predict whether the coating or the substrate fails first. The possibility for using such diagrams for assessing the evolution of damage in coated cemented carbide tools is highlighted.
