Fast diffusion of water nanodroplets on graphene

Résumé

Diffusion across surfaces generally involves motion on a vibrating but otherwise stationary substrate. Here, using molecular dynamics, we show that a layered material such as graphene opens up a new mechanism for surface diffusion whereby adsorbates are carried by propagating ripples in a motion similar to surfing. For water nanodroplets, we demonstrate that the mechanism leads to exceedingly fast diffusion that is 2-3 orders of magnitude faster than the self-diffusion of water molecules in liquid water. We also reveal the underlying principles that regulate this new mechanism for diffusion and show how it also applies to adsorbates other than water, thus opening up the prospect of achieving fast and controllable motion of adsorbates across material surfaces more generally.

The main objectives of this work are 2-fold : The development of a novel type of composite material based on carbon nanofibers supported on sintered metal fibers filters (CNF/SMF) and to explore the use of this material as a catalytic support for a model reaction: selective hydrogenation of acetylene. The advantages of this novel support are: Due to carbon nanofibers, it combines a graphitic structure with a high specific surface area without microporosity. Supported carbon nanofibers can be used in a fixed bed reactor without very high pressure drop. Combination of two materials with high thermal conductivity gives a composite which keeps this property. It is suitable for highly exo/endothermic reactions, diminishing temperature gradients in the catalytic bed. The synthesis of carbon nanofibers on SMF filters was carried out by ethane catalytic decomposition at 655°C directly on metallic filters. An oxidation of SMF followed by a reduction in H2 create surface roughness, leading to a larger area for CNF nucleation. The CNF formation mechanism includes several steps: it starts with carbon deposition on metallic surface followed by its diffusion into the metal leading to carbides formation. When the limit of carbon solubility is attained, a layer of carbon is formed on the surface of metallic fibers. High tension within the bulk metal leads to carbide dissociation and by phase separation to graphite formation, which pushes the metallic particles through the carbon layer. Nickel, stainless steel an Inconel (an alloy of mainly nickel, iron and chromium) filters were used. The latter gave the highest uniformity of the carbon nanofibers layer showing an excellent mechanical stability. In order to control carbon deposition on the filters, a formal kinetic analysis of the decomposition reaction was undertaken. Partial orders of 1 for ethane, -2 for hydrogen and an apparent activation energy of 235 kJ/mol were obtained. The observed kinetics suggests strongly that the C – C bond scission is the rate determining step and not carbon diffusion into the metal which is often reported in the literature. The synthesis procedures like time on stream and reaction temperature were optimized: 1 hour of a mixture C2H6:H2:Ar (3:17:80) decomposition over SMFInconel at 655°C lead to ∼6% of carbon, leading to a CNF layer of 1 µm thickness covering the metallic fibers entirely. This material presents a high specific surface area (22.2 m2/g) and a low pressure drop for the gas flowing through. The carbon nanofibers have a diameter between 20 and 50 nm and a crystalline structure with platelets morphology where the graphene layers are stacked one above the other. Their surface is composed almost exclusively of carbon and hydrogen. Amongst the multiple possible applications of this novel composite material, its use as a catalyst support was assessed. Selective hydrogenation of acetylene was carried out over palladium supported on CNF/SMF and compared with commercial supports (ACF, EGF and AGF). The activated carbon fibers cloth (ACF) led to a Pd activity at least twice as E-type glass fibers tissue (EGF) or EGF covered by an alumina layer (AGF). Reaction kinetics was studied for Pd/ACF, leading to acetylene and hydrogen partial orders of -0.5 and 2.4, respectively and apparent activation energy of 50 kJ/mol. The negative partial order for C2H2 suggests high adsorption strength of this compound compared to other reagents on palladium. This particularity allows Pd to be selective. Hydrogenations are known to be structure sensitive. Therefore the catalyst activity for the model reaction depends on Pd particle size. It increases for large particle sizes. The control of this parameter was a priority. Variations of the palladium precursor, of the support and catalyst treatment were carried out. Micro-wave plasma was used since it is fast and has low energy consumption allowing chemically modifying the carbon support surface and activating catalyst after impregnation. This controls not only palladium sintering, but also decomposes tetraaminopalladate more efficiently, resulting in a catalyst activity of one order of magnitude higher. In order to control the palladium deposition on CNF/SMFInconel composite, it is important to have surface functional groups. The activation of carbon nanofibers was carried out with a 4 hours treatment in a boiling aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. This led to an amount on surface oxygen containing groups, per mass of carbon, higher than in ACF. Palladium particle size on the composite was controlled by support activation, the use of several metal precursors or different loadings or by a thermal treatment in argon at 500°C. Optimisation of the procedure allowed to obtain in a controlled way an average palladium particle sizes between 3.6 and 25 nm. The activity and selectivity towards ethylene of Pd/CNF/SMFInconel were observed to be higher compared to palladium supported on activated carbon, alumina or barite. Graphitic nature of carbon nanofibers, leading to strong metal-support interaction, was accounted as responsible for these improvements. The high thermal conductivity of the composite CNF/SMF ensured good heat transfer released due to the exothermicity of the reaction and allowed to work close to isothermal conditions in the catalytic bed. Finally it can be concluded, that for the first time carbon nanofibers synthesis was carried out in one step on sintered metal fibers filters, resulting in a novel structured composite material combining different specific properties and having promising potential applications.

Composite Hydrogels for the Replacement of the Nucleus Pulposus

The intervertebral disc (IVD), which provides flexibility to the spine and facilitates damping and motion, is composed of two distinct structures: the annulus fibrosus (AF) and the nucleus pulposus (NP). The AF, which is fibrous and elastic, confines the NP, a gel-like material, containing 65 to 90% of water. The NP mediates load bearing in the spine by maintaining a suitable disc height and adequate loading of the AF. The effectiveness of this mechanism depends on the swelling capacity of the NP and the intra-discal pressure, and it becomes severely limited once the NP has degenerated. Up to now, the main strategy for relieving back pain has been vertebral fusion or total disc replacement. However, there is currently a shift in emphasis towards preservation techniques. NP replacement in particular has attracted considerable interest and various types of synthetic NP have been investigated as a means to restore IVD functions. The present study has focused on injectable, UV curing composite hydrogels for NP replacement. The objectives have been to: (a) synthesize methacrylated monomers based on Tween 20 surfactant precursors, and to use these as a crosslinker in combination with linear hydrophilic molecules in order to obtain hydrogels, (b) investigate the UV curing kinetics, swelling and mechanical properties of the hydrogels and their variation with crosslinker and photoinitiator concentration, (c) evaluate their biocompatibility and (d) study the influence of the filler on the performance of composite hydrogels based on these materials, and hence assess their potential as NP implants. The synthesis of new methacrylated monomers based on Tween 20, yielded reproducible conversions between 75 to 85 %. Tween 20 trimethacrylate (T3), a branched molecule, was then used as a crosslinker in hydrogel systems derived from either N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The study of the curing kinetics by photorheology and photo differential scanning calorimetry of both systems showed that the concentration of T3 controled the crosslinking density whereas the amount of initiator and of UV intensity controled the time of curing and the formation of dangling chains and cyclization. The build-up of the network prior to gelation of the two blends was analyzed using existing growth models and particularly complex patterns of growth were identified for T3/NVP. From the study of the curing kinetics, optimum conditions for processing could be determined. The mechanical behavior of T3/NVP hydrogels was strongly dependent on the concentration of T3 and on the water content of the network. Swelling ratios varied from 1.6 to 5.8 with decreasing T3 content, which is comparable with the behaviour of the human NP, which shows swelling ratios from 1.8 to 9. The elastic modulus varied from about 4400 to 3 kPa for dried and fully hydrated samples, respectively, which is close to the modulus of 3 to 6 kPa observed in the native NP at swelling equilibrium. Preliminary biocompatibility studies showed cell viability and the hydrogels exhibited a highly interconnected porous structure at swelling equilibrium. They could also be further reinforced with nano-fibrillated cellulose (NFC), a hydrophilic material, with a 3 to 8-fold increase in elastic modulus being observed with respect to the neat hydrogel depending on the NFC content, i.e. greater stiffness than the native NP, as required. However, the swelling ratio was decreased compared to that of the neat hydrogel. To overcome this without compromising the mechanical properties, the NFC fibres were chemically modified to increase their hydrophilicity. The swelling ratio of these new composite hydrogels was increased by 1 to 20 % depending on the NFC content. The possibility of tailoring both the swelling behaviour and mechanical performance suggests these materials to be ideal for NP replacement.

Strain Hardening Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (SH-UHPFRC) were used successfully over the last 8 years in numerous cast in place rehabilitation applications as long lasting waterproofing layers (20 to 30 mm thickness) and, combined with rebar, to increase the structural load bearing capacity of existing bridge decks or building slabs (50 to 70 mm thickness). In composite applications on reinforced concrete substrates, SH-UHPFRC provide a deformation capability (strain hardening) larger than their free shrinkage which makes localized macro cracking at service state very unlikely. On the other hand some specific conditions of microclimatic state of the substrate (moisture and thermal conditions) and climatological (temperature and humidity) of the site such as casting at low temperatures (winter conditions) might increase the autogenous shrinkage and thus eigenstresses of the freshly cast SH-UHPFRC and hinder the development of its tensile strength or/and deformability. Combination of these specific circumstances could compromise the SH-UHPFRC protective functions due to the occurrence of localized macro cracks, making the objective of using SH-UHPFRC as a onetime intervention strategy in rehabilitation application obsolete. Advancement in hydration at early age leads to formation of partially emptied capillary spaces contributing to self-desiccation, decrease of the relative humidity and increase of the capillary depression. Since water is under depression, the solid porous material is under compression forcing the material to shrink. From the aforementioned, it can be deduced that the autogenous shrinkage is a force driven phenomenon: a force is applied on the ageing viscoelastic porous skeleton and the apparent structural response of the bulk cementitious material is the autogenous shrinkage strain. Based on the aforementioned two levels of investigation were considered in this thesis: I. Material level: ageing viscoelastic porous skeleton of hydrating cementitious material II. Structural level: autogenous shrinkage development under the action of its driving forces The objective of this thesis was to study the development of the autogenous shrinkage and its relation with the development of microstructure and mechanical properties in SH-UHPFRC cured at moderate and low temperature conditions (1 to 20°C). Focus was put on: (1) kinetics and magnitude of hydration of silica fume and cement, (2) activation energy of the processes, (3) stiffness (E modulus and Poisson ratio) development, and (4) states of water and pore development. Finally a cross link analysis of information obtained from material and structural level was carried out to better highlight the mechanisms and driving forces of autogenous shrinkage. CM22-TKK, a SH-UHPFRC developed at MCS for rehabilitation applications, on the basis of CEMTECmultiscale® fibrous mixes, was used. Silica fume is one of the major constituents of CM22-TKK (26% by mass of cement). Extent of the silica fume pozzolanic reaction significantly affects the pore size distribution of the UHPFRC matrix which then influences the development of the relative humidity, self-desiccation and finally autogenous deformation. Detailed experimental investigation performed showed that only maximum 8% by mass of cement out of 26% silica fume used in the recipe reacts in moderate and low temperature curing conditions. Finally, a model of silica-fume degree of reaction as a function of curing temperature (5 to 250 °C) was proposed on the basis of a detailed literature survey of existing works with low W/B mixes. The activation energy of the thermo-mechanical properties was evaluated for thermo (cumulative heat of hydration) and mechanical properties development (such as dynamic Elastic modulus, dynamic Poisson’s ratio and compressive strength). A single activation energy Ea of 27.4 KJ/mol could successfully model the activation of all properties. Since maturity was not a proper reference to compare the autogenous deformations at various temperatures, a more fundamental reference such as degree of hydration was used. Experimental investigation was carried out using different techniques such as isothermal calorimetry and 29Si solid NMR to evaluate the development of the degree of hydration of cement and silica fume in UHPFRC at moderate and low temperature curing conditions. The ultimate degree of hydration of cement in CM22-TKK for a closed system was 0.34. There was a close correspondence between the experimental results and the predictions of the volumetric phase distribution models of Waller (0.28) and Jensen (0.32). Finally, the De Schutter et al. 1996 model was used to describe the mechanical properties (Emodulus and Poisson ratio) as function of degree of hydration. Nondestructive and non-invasive 1H-NMR was used to evaluate volumetric phase distribution development at 20°C, especially the classification of the water types (capillary, gel and C-S-H interlayer water) which brought fully new and valuable information about the hydration kinetics and pore size development. The results were also compared with Jensen volumetric phase distribution model to check the advantages and limitation of both approaches. Finally experimental investigation was carried out to follow the development of autogenous shrinkage and eigenstresses (in case of restrained shrinkage) of CM22-TKK cured in isotherm conditions (1 to 20°C). Eigenstresses were obtained and used to highlight the effect of the viscous response of the material at the different temperatures investigated. The previously mentioned results on the kinetics of the silica fume reaction, cement hydration and evolution of states of water and development of stiffness were then put into perspective with the trends observed on the autogenous shrinkage and eigenstresses development.
