Lead-Free MA(2)CuCl(x)Br(4-x), Hybrid Perovskites

Despite their extremely good performance in solar cells with efficiencies approaching 20% and the emerging application for light-emitting devices, organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites suffer from high content of toxic, polluting, and bioaccumulative Pb, which may eventually hamper their commercialization. Here, we present the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) Cu-based hybrid perovskites and study their optoelectronic properties to investigate their potential application in solar cells and light-emitting devices, providing a new environmental-friendly alternative to Pb. The series (CH3NH3)(2)CuClxBr4-x, was studied in detail, with the role of Cl found to be essential for stabilization. By exploiting the additional Cu d-d transitions and appropriately tuning the Br/C1 ratio, which affects ligand-to-metal charge transfer transitions, the optical absorption in this series of compounds can be extended to the near-infrared for optimal spectral overlap with the solar irradiance. In situ formation of Cu+ ions was found to be responsible for the green photoluminescence of this material set. Processing conditions for integrating Cu-based perovskites into photovoltaic device architectures, as well as the factors currently limiting photovoltaic performance, are discussed: among them, we identified the combination of low absorption coefficient and heavy mass of the holes as main limitations for the solar cell efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the potential of 2D copper perovskite as light harvesters and lays the foundation for further development of perovskite based on transition metals as alternative lead-free materials. Appropriate molecular design will be necessary to improve the material's properties and solar cell performance filling the gap with the state-of-the-art Pb-based perovskite devices.

The effect of illumination on the formation of metal halide perovskite films

Optimizing the morphology of metal halide perovskite films is an important way to improve the performance of solar cells(1) when these materials are used as light harvesters(2), because film homogeneity is correlated with photovoltaic performance(3). Many device architectures and processing techniques have been explored with the aim of achieving high-performance devices(4), including single-step deposition(5), sequential deposition(6,7) and anti-solvent methods(1,8). Earlier studies have looked at the influence of reaction conditions on film quality(3), such as the concentration of the reactants9,10 and the reaction temperature(11). However, the precise mechanism of the reaction and the main factors that govern it are poorly understood. The consequent lack of control is the main reason for the large variability observed in perovskite morphology and the related solar-cell performance(2,3). Here we show that light has a strong influence on the rate of perovskite formation and on film morphology in both of the main deposition methods currently used: sequential deposition and the anti-solvent method. We study the reaction of a metal halide (lead iodide) with an organic compound (methylammonium iodide) using confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The lead iodide crystallizes before the intercalation of methylammonium iodide commences, producing the methylammonium lead iodide perovskite. We find that the formation of perovskite via such a sequential deposition is much accelerated by light. The influence of light on morphology is reflected in a doubling of solar-cell efficiency. Conversely, using the anti-solvent method to form methyl ammonium lead iodide perovskite in a single step from the same starting materials, we find that the best photovoltaic performance is obtained when films are produced in the dark. The discovery of light-activated crystallization not only identifies a previously unknown source of variability in opto-electronic properties, but also opens up new ways of tuning morphology and structuring perovskites for various applications.

Surface, Interface, and Bulk Electronic and Chemical Properties of Complete Perovskite Solar Cells: Tapered Cross-Section Photoelectron Spectroscopy, a Novel Solution

The surface, interface, and bulk properties are a few of the most critical factors that influence the performance of perovskite solar cells. The photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) is used as a technique to analyze these properties. However, the information depth of PES is limited to 10-20 nm, which makes it not suitable to study the complete devices, which have a thickness of similar to 1 mu m. Here, we introduce a novel and simple technique of PES on a tapered cross section (TCS-PES). It provides both lateral and vertical resolutions compared to the conventional PES so that it is suitable to study a complete perovskite solar cell. It offers many benefits over conventional PES methods such as the chemical composition in the micrometer scale from the surface to the bulk and the electronic properties at the multiple interfaces. The chemical natures of different layers of the perovskite-based solar cells [(FAP-bI(3))(0.85)(MAPbBr(3))(0.15)] can be identified precisely for the first time using the TCS-PES method. We found that the perovskite layer has higher iodine concentration at the Spiro/perovskite interface and higher bromine concentration at the TiO2/perovskite interface. UPS measurements on the tapered cross section revealed that the perovskite is n-type, and the solar cell studied here is a p-n-n structure type device. The unique possibilities to analyze the complete solar cell by XPS and UPS allow us to estimate the band bending in a working solar cell. Moreover, this technique can further be used to study the device under operating conditions, and it can be applied in other solid-state devices like solid electrolyte Li-ion batteries, LEDs, or photoelectrodes.

Investigation of Lead-free perovskites for Optoelectronic Application

The search for new energy sources and materials is at the foundations of scientific and technological progress. These two, often interconnected, fundamental elements open a way to create novel designs and improve existing ones for all types of machines and devices.Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are a great example of this kind of system. Achievements in halide perovskite materials research made a remarkably rapid growth of energy conversion efficiency in PSC technology possible. In turn, a manufacturing process for the technology is potentially cheaper and more straightforward (relative to Si-based). As a result, the PSCs can be a solid background for producing the next generation of solar cells.However, unfortunately, PSCs are still not ready for a market, primarily because of three problems: large-scale production, stability, and toxicity. The first problem is mainly a result of the rawness of the technology, requires mostly resolving engineering tasks, and is not a fundamental barrier. The second problem â stability has a deeper connection to the properties of the material itself. The nature of degradation processes in PSCs is not completely clear. Still, different studies have found some promising ways to stabilize PSCs for a range of thousands of hours. Thus, a combination of engineering and material research can solve this problem, despite its deeper basis.The third problem, toxicity, is a fundamental property of the high efficient PSCs because of its lead-based compound. Lead is one of the critical components of halide perovskites used in the technology, and at the same time, this metal has confirmed toxicity. The water solubility of lead in halide perovskites (primarily as PbI2 and PbBr2) complicates the situation for the whole lifecycle of the devices - from production to recycling. The toxicity of the materials used in PSCs can affect one of the main goals of solar energy: to be produced safe, clean, and sustainable.Taking into account these facts, I focused this thesis on searching for lead-free alternatives for PSCs.Initially, I focused on searching for a model to predict promising vacancy-ordered double perovskites' formability as part of initial screening. I demonstrated the applicability of the geometrical approach based on Goldschmidt's Tolerance Factor for a simple, easy-to-use formability prediction technique for this class of materials. During this part of the study, I also demonstrated a difference between using the method for classic and vacancy-ordered perovskites.In the next part, I used a novel approach based on deep learning to design a new model of perovskite formability. As a result, I successfully forecast perovskite formability with an accuracy of over 98% for the best case. Moreover, I found that the resulting models were able to find some inaccuracies in the original data.Following, I synthesized and researched the structure and properties of tellurium-based vacancy-ordered perovskites. During the research, I found an unexpected complex situation of the optical gap determination for the materials. To solve this challenge, I demonstrated different approaches of absorption spectra fitting and cross-referenced it with other experimental data.
