Dynamics of Electronic and Ionic Charges in Cyanine Organic Semiconductor Devices

Organic semiconductor materials have been widely applied in optoelectronic devices to replace their inorganic counterparts and explore new fields of applications. Due to their high extinction coefficients, chemical tunability and solubility, cyanine dyes are an interesting class of molecules to be employed in organic semiconductor devices. Their beneficial properties have been demonstrated in organic solar cells (OSC), photodetectors and recently in organic light-emitting electrochemical cells (OLEC). The focus of this thesis is to analyse different aspects regarding the dynamics of electronic and ionic charges in cyanine based devices. Models and conclusions are not restricted to cyanine based devices but can potentially be applied in various systems where combined ionic and electronic charges are present. In order to focus on electronic processes in OSCs, a combination of steady-state, transient and impedance analysis is used. It is resolved that trapped charges can be introduced at the dye/hole extracting layer interface by using specific solvents for the cyanine layer fabrication. These measurements also reveal the low hole mobility of cyanine films which in turn limits the possible upper layer thickness in OSCs. A frequently used way to enhance the conductivity of organic semiconductors is the addition of extra charges by chemical doping. This concept is employed for a near-infrared absorbing dye which is used as donor in a bilayer solar cell. The dependence of all figures of merit versus doping concentration and layer thickness is studied in detail. It is found that the performance of the optimised cell is not further improved by doping, but that it presents a good option if thicker layers are required, e.g. on rough substrates. Furthermore, the stability and degradation pathway of the p-doped species is analysed. This information is of general relevance as they also occur after charge transfer at the heterojunction interface of an OSC and during operation of OLECs. The dynamics of ionic charge carriers is separated into two contributions. In a first step, the steady-state diffusion profile of the counter ion within a cyanine/fullerene bilayer structure is scrutinised using different profiling techniques. An unexpected constant ion profile is found throughout the C60 layer. Simultaneously, the potential within the acceptor is measured by the Kelvin probe technique. A mechanism of combined electron and ion transfer from the C60 to the dye and vice versa is proposed which is in agreement with the experimental results. A prerequisite for OLEC operation is the mobility of ionic charge carriers. Their dynamics in cyanine salts under the effect of an external field is therefore studied in such devices. Several methods are developed and applied to characterise the dynamic p-i-n structure in detail, i.e. the position and width of the intrinsic region as well as the doping concentrations in p- and n-doped regions. The combination of all these methods helps to understand the transient behaviour of these cyanine devices but can also be adapted to other OLEC systems. A major drawback of cyanine dyes as emissive material is their low fluorescence quantum yield in solid films. To overcome this restriction and improve the OLEC efficiency, host-guest systems with various visibly emitting dyes are studied. The gain in fluorescence quantum yield in the film can directly be transferred to an increase in external quantum efficiency of the device.

Approches numériques du transport de charges dans les semiconducteurs organiques

Using plastics or dyes like molecular semiconductors to make optoelectronic devices at low cost is a project in industry that is of great interest to the "Information Community" of this beginning of the 21st century. Some applications of this technology have already been realized including flexible flat-panel displays made with organic light-emitting diodes, organic transistors for active matrices, organic solar cells and sensors. In all these applications it is essential to deduce and understand the laws that determine the charge transport and the light emission in these materials. The goal of this thesis is to contribute to the theoretical models that describe these transport processes. In order to predict the behaviour of charge carriers in a given device, one can choose two methods. One can either numerically solve the master equations that describe the general behaviour of charges and currents in each part of the device, or one can simulate the detailed behaviour of each charge in the device by fixing the conditions of its movement using a procedure known as "Monte Carlo". In this thesis I addressed the two approaches. I have been interested successively in the prediction of the electric properties of multilayer light-emitting devices, considered as a whole. Then I was able to understand in detail the processes accruing at the organic-organic interfaces by using the Monte Carlo method. My last project involved the study of the channel of an organic transistor. In each one of these cases I took account of the characteristic features of small molecule organic materials in order to develop models for charge transport for the study and optimization of two important types of organic devices : organic light-emitting diodes and field-effect transistors. Amorphous organic semiconductors are mainly used for the fabrication of organic diodes. They are characterized by an energetically disordered density of states that is assumed to be Gaussian. The transport of charges in these materials occurs via hopping from one molecule to another in this density of states. The correlations between the energies of the molecular sites have important effects on transport ; the dependence of mobility on the applied electric field in particular. If the energetic disorder is due to the random orientations of the permanent dipoles of the molecules, then the correlations between the orientations of these dipoles can profoundly change the spatial configuration of the energetic disorder and consequently the charge transport. Due to the fact that organic diodes often comprise of multiple organic layers, understanding device behaviour at the organic-organic interfaces is of critical importance. Electrons and holes accumulate close to these interfaces and they are therefore more likely to recombine and emit light. The Coulomb interactions between the charge carriers and the energy disorder are at the origin of complex processes taking place at these accumulation regions. I studied these processes through a 3D multi-particle Monte Carlo simulation. The short-range Coulomb repulsion forbids the double-occupancy of the sites and shifts the energy level for injection of carriers across the interface upward, thus increasing the electric current of the diode. The long-range Coulomb interactions increase the electric field and the current at the interface although this increase is less important than suggested by 1D models. Effects related to the hopping process such as the effect of the exact form of the hopping law and backward or return hop at the interface are clearly discussed. The Monte Carlo simulations are cross-compared with an analytical model for hopping transport across the interface. This comparison made it possible to understand other aspects of the physical processes at organic-organic interface and supports the Monte Carlo simulations. The study of the electron-hole recombination showed a decrease of the cross-section with an increase of the applied electric field, but this decrease is less than what can be expected by the classical Langevin theory. In spite of their efficiency, Monte Carlo simulations are not attractive when modelling complex multi-layer diodes. The 1D models are better suited in this case. A 1D model called MOLED, which was developed at Laboratoire d'Optoélectronique des Matériaux Moléculaires (LOMM) for the simulation of the organic diodes, is used and described in detail in this thesis. We used MOLED to explore the effect of the energy correlations on the electric field dependence of the mobility. In fact we simulated the time-of-flight experiment, a common method used to determine of the carrier mobility. The crystalline organic semiconductors achieve mobility performances close or even better than amorphous silicon. Their use for the fabrication of field-effect transistors is thus a good choice. The models for charge transport in crystalline organic materials differ much from their counterparts for amorphous organic materials. Indeed band models are more appropriate to describe charge transport in crystalline organic materials. However it is very important to take into account the effects of electronic polarization in these models. I developed a method of calculation of these effects of polarization in the bulk of the organic semiconductor and I extended it to the case of the interface with a dielectric insulator, a situation encountered in the channel of the organic transistor. These calculations showed that when the polarity of the dielectric increases the inter-molecular transfer integral decreases. This is confirmed by experimental measurements showing increasingly low values of mobility when the permittivity of the insulator increases.

Strategies to Optimizing Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) constitute a novel class of hybrid organic-inorganic solar cells. At the heart of the device is a mesoporous film of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, which are coated with a monolayer of dye sensitive to the visible region of the solar spectrum. The role of the dye is similar to the role of chlorophyll in plants; it harvests solar light and transfers the energy via electron transfer to a suitable material (here TiO2) to produce electricity — as opposed to chemical energy in plants. DSCs are fabricated of abundant and cheap materials using inexpensive processes (e.g. screen-printing) and are likely to be a significant contributor to the future commercial photovoltaic technology portfolio. The work conducted during this thesis aimed at optimizing the DSC using three different strategies: The use of versatile organic sensitizers for stable and efficient DSCs, the study of tandem device architectures in combination with other solar cells to harvest a larger fraction of the solar spectrum, and the development of a validated optoelectric model of the DSC. Organic donor-π-acceptor dyes are an interesting alternative to the standard metal-organic complexes used in DSCs. Efficient photovoltaic conversion and stable performance could be demonstrated with three classes of donor systems, namely diphenylamine, difluorenylaminophenyl, and π-extended tetrathiafulvalene. The highest conversion efficiencies were obtained with a difluorenylaminophenyl donor system (η = 8.3 % with a volatile electrolyte and η = 7.6 % with a solvent-free ionic liquid, which was a new record for organic dyes at the time of publication). Surprisingly, efficient regeneration of the oxidized dye by the I-/I3- redox mediator was found with the π-extended tetrathiafulvalene system, even though the thermodynamic driving force was as low as 150 mV. So far driving forces of 300-500 mV had been regarded as necessary for efficient regeneration of the dye cation. Also, important structure-property relationships pertaining to the recombination of electrons with the electrolyte and to the stability of the device could be identified (i.e. effect of linear vs. branched structure, linker length, and moieties used). The power conversion efficiency of solar cells can be extended beyond the limit for a single cell (∼ 30 %) by using multiple cells with different optical gaps in a tandem device. DSCs and chalcopyrite Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells have complementary optical gaps and are thus suitable systems for integration in a tandem device. It was shown that a monolithic DSC/CIGS tandem device has the potential for increased efficiency over a mechanically stacked device due to increased light transmission to the bottom cell, and a monolithic DSC/CIGS device with an initial efficiency of η = 12.2 % was demonstrated. The degradation of the devices — induced by the corrosion of the CIGS cell in contact with the I-/I3- redox mediator — could be retarded with a protective thin conformal ZnO/TiO2 oxide layer coated on the CIGS cell by atomic layer deposition. Finally, an experimentally validated optical and electrical model of the DSC has been developed to assist the optimization process, which is predominantly conducted by empirical means in the DSC research community. The optical model allows to accurately calculate the internal quantum efficiency of devices, i.e. the ratio of extracted electrons to absorbed photons by the dye, a crucial and so far difficult to determine characteristic. Intrinsic parameters — like injection efficiency, electron diffusion length, or distribution of trap states in the TiO2 — can be extracted from experimental steady-state and time-dependent data with the electric model. The model allows to make a comprehensive and quantitative loss analysis of the different optical and electric loss channels in the DSC. The model has been implemented with a graphical user interface for straightforward usage. All three optimization strategies — organic dyes, tandem architecture, and device modeling — developed during this thesis make a valuable contribution to the development and commercialization of inexpensive and high efficiency DSCs. They enable a comprehensive view of the system and pave the way for a systematic analysis and reduction of losses, which has been the ultimate route to success for several established photovoltaic technologies.

Nanoparticle sensitisation of solid-state nanocrystalline solar cell

Over the past fifteen years dye-sensitised nanocrystalline solar cells have been the subject of intense research and development efforts. These systems provide a technically and economically credible alternative to classical p-n junction solar cells, reaching over 10 % certified efficiency under standard solar illumination conditions (AM 1.5, 1000 W/m2). Recently, the liquid electrolyte, commonly used in these dye-sensitised solar cells, could successfully be replaced by a novel solid hole-conducting material (spiro-OMeTAD). The absence of volatile solvents and corrosive components like iodine presents a clear advantage of these solid-state devices over their photoelectrochemical counterparts. Yet, their maximum overall efficiency of about 3 % clearly lacks behind the performance features of classical dye-sensitized solar cells. The objective of this work is the replacement of the usually used sensitiser (transition metal complexes and organic dyes) by quantum-dots. It was motivated by the possibility to achieve panchromatic light absorption due to the size-dependent properties of the quantum-dots. Some studies have been published using quantum-dots of inorganic low-bandgap semiconductors as sensitisers for mesoporous wide bandgap semiconductor electrodes in conjunction with liquid electrolytes. These systems often suffer from corrosion and photo-corrosion mainly due to the aggressive nature of the electrolyte employed. Solid-state organic-inorganic heterojunctions might provide the desired environment for quantum-dot sensitisation, as the environment is much less aggressive. A large variety of inorganic quantum-dot materials like PbS, CdS, PbSe and CdSe were scrutinized for their use as sensitisers. All particles were synthesised in situ on the TiO2 surface using two different techniques: dip-coating and chemical bath deposition. Lead sulphide was the most investigated due to its superior photovoltaic characteristics. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) of PbS sensitised TiO2 electrodes fabricated via dip-coating clearly showed the distinct particles on the surface of the semiconductor. The electron transfer dynamics following optical excitation of quantum-dot sensitized TiO2/spiro-OMeTAD heterojunctions were thoroughly studied. Fluorescence spectroscopy was used to prove the possible electron injection from the PbS into the TiO2. Nanosecond laser spectroscopy was applied to monitor the interfacial recombination of the injected electron and the oxidised hole-conductor. Femtosecond laser spectroscopy allowed measuring the ultra-fast kinetics in the system, including electron trapping, exciton recombination and PbS regeneration. An overall efficiency of 0.5 % at 0.1 sun (AM 1.5) has been reached with such systems. Chemical bath deposition (CBD) of PbS leads to the formation of a layer rather than distinct particles on the TiO2. Solar cells fabricated via CBD exhibited open-circuit voltages which were generally 100 mV higher then those of comparable devices made via dip-coating. The PbS layer acts as blocking layer, hindering the contact between TiO2 and the hole-conductor. This technique allowed achieving devices highly linear with respect to the illumination power. Different strategies were pursued to impede interfacial recombination, among which the introduction of self-assembled monolayers at the interface between the organic and inorganic phases was proven to be the most efficient. Nanosecond laser spectroscopy showed a strong decrease of the interfacial recombination kinetic rates in the presence of hexadecylmalonic acid or decylphosphonic acid monolayers. Short-circuit currents could be raised by a factor two to four using such type of molecules. The overall efficiency of the device could be strongly increased, reaching 1 % at 0.1 Sun (AM 1.5). CBD was also used to deposit PbSe and CdSe layers at the surface of TiO2. Fluorescence spectroscopy was used to probe electron injection from CdSe quantum dots to TiO2. Generally it was observed that metal sulfides were more efficient in sensitizing TiO2/OMeTAD heterojunctions then the respective selenides.
