Néanmoins, la structure des composés rend l'approche assez différente de ce que l'on observe en chimie inorganique ou en électrochimie notamment parce que les principes d'oxydoréduction traitent plutôt, dans ces deux derniers cas, de composés ioniques ; les liaisons chimiques dans une structure organique sont essentiellement covalentes, les réactions d'oxydoréduction organiques ne présentent donc pas de transfert d’électron dans le sens électrochimique du terme.
Catalyst poisoningCatalyst poisoning is the partial or total deactivation of a catalyst by a chemical compound. Poisoning refers specifically to chemical deactivation, rather than other mechanisms of catalyst degradation such as thermal decomposition or physical damage. Although usually undesirable, poisoning may be helpful when it results in improved catalyst selectivity (e.g. Lindlar's catalyst). An important historic example was the poisoning of catalytic converters by leaded fuel.
Spin trappingSpin trapping is an analytical technique employed in chemistry and biology for the detection and identification of short-lived free radicals through the use of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. EPR spectroscopy detects paramagnetic species such as the unpaired electrons of free radicals. However, when the half-life of radicals is too short to detect with EPR, compounds known as spin traps are used to react covalently with the radical products and form more stable adduct that will also have paramagnetic resonance spectra detectable by EPR spectroscopy.
CalutronUn calutron est un spectroscope de masse utilisé pour la séparation isotopique de l'uranium. Il a été mis au point par Ernest Orlando Lawrence pendant le projet Manhattan et ressemble au cyclotron qu'il avait inventé. Son nom est une abréviation de « Cal. U.-tron » (« California University -tron »), en l'honneur de l'université de Californie, où travaille Ernest Lawrence, qui supervise le Laboratoire national de Los Alamos.
