Geometric Integrators for Nonadiabatic Molecular Quantum Dynamics Induced by the Interaction with the Electromagnetic Field

Understanding the elementary steps involved in a chemical reaction forms the cornerstone of physical chemistry research. One way to deepen this understanding is by studying chemical and physical processes using linear and nonlinear spectroscopic techniques. However, the outcomes of such experiments can be difficult to decipher due to the interweaving of several effects. Therefore, in order to help experimentalists to disentangle such spectra, the role of theorists is to develop efficient tools that are able to accurately describe molecular systems. The starting point of such tools is solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. In this thesis, after implementing geometric integrators, which are based on a combination of the split-operator algorithm and Magnus expansion, for the exact nonadiabatic quantum dynamics of a molecule interacting with a time-dependent electromagnetic field, we derive and implement these geometric integrators for the time-dependent perturbation theory, the Condon, rotating-wave, and ultrashort-pulse approximations, as well as every possible combination thereof. As verified in several model systems, these integrators exactly preserve the geometric invariants, and achieve an arbitrary prescribed order of accuracy in the time step and an exponential convergence in the grid spacing. We also explore in more detail the ultrashort-pulse approximation and derive an analytical expression for the combination with the time-dependent perturbation theory; this expression significantly accelerates numerical calculations. We show that in the limit of the zero pulse width, the d-pulse approximation is recovered. We illustrate the performance of the introduced approximations, using a three-dimensional model of pyrazine, in which it is essential to go beyond the d-pulse limit in order to describe the dynamics correctly. The high-order algorithms are also applied to the photodissociation dynamics of iodomethane (CH3I), following its excitation to the A band. We implement a general split-operator with both discrete-variable and finite-basis representations that can treat one non-Cartesian, such as angular coordinate. To test the effect of various degrees of freedom and of the nonadiabatic dynamics, we apply these algorithms to one-, two-, and three-dimensional models of iodomethane, both in the presence and in the absence of nonadiabatic couplings. A full quantum calculation is, however, limited to problems with low dimensionality (approximately ten degrees of freedom). Beyond this, one must seek an affordable balance between computational efficiency and physical accuracy and can employ, for example, semiclassical methods that are based on classical trajectories. A simple semiclassical approximation that can treat larger systems and requires only local knowledge of the potential is the on-the-fly ab initio thawed Gaussian approximation. We implement a generalization of the method that goes beyond the Franck-Condon approximation and treats Herzberg-Teller active molecules. Our method is used to compute absorption spectra of phenyl radical and of benzene, for which the Herzberg-Teller contribution is essential.

Evaluation and analysis of vibrationally resolved electronic spectra with ab initio semiclassical dynamics

Linear and nonlinear spectroscopy techniques are widely used to study numerous important chemical and physical processes. However, the interpretation of these experimental spectra often becomes very complicated because a particular spectrum constitutes a mere footprint of a host of various, possibly intertwined, effects. In this spirit, calculations in the time-dependent picture provide a useful tool for decoding such spectra. Nevertheless, the ultimate challenge is to devise a theoretical framework that could yield sufficient efficiency as well as accuracy to describe the molecular system of interest in a satisfactory way. The strategy is relatively straightforward for low dimensional systems that are directly tractable, e.g., with exact quantum dynamics performed on an equidistant grid. Despite the formidable overall exponential scaling, these calculations can be significantly accelerated by using higher-order split-operator propagation schemes. In general however, one is forced to seek an affordable balance between physical accuracy on one hand and computational efficiency on the other by employing, for instance, some of the techniques from the broad family of semiclassical methods based on classical trajectories. To this end, the thawed Gaussian approximation (TGA) is combined with an on-the-fly ab initio scheme (OTF-AI). The resulting OTF-AI-TGA algorithm is efficient enough to treat all vibrational degrees of freedom (DOFs) on an equal footing even in case of larger molecules such as pentathiophene (105 DOFs). Moreover, in sharp contrast to popular approaches based on global harmonic approximation, OTF-AI-TGA reproduces almost perfectly the absorption and photoelectron spectra of ammonia, i.e., spectra with strong dependence on large amplitude motions. In addition to the mere reproduction of experimental spectra, a novel systematic approach is introduced to assess the importance and the dynamical couplings of individual vibrational DOFs. This is in turn used to gain a deeper insight into the associated physical and chemical processes by attributing specific spectral features to the underlying molecular motion. Specifically, in the case of oligothiophenes, this approach was used to assign the dynamical interplay between quinoid and aromatic characters of individual rings to particular spectral patterns and, furthermore, to explain the changes in the vibrational line shape with an increasing number of rings. Furthermore, in systems that are too large to be treated with accurate quantum methods, efficient methods such as OTF-AI-TGA are expected to be useful as a preliminary tool for identification of the subspace of the important DOFs. On this subspace, one can then unleash some of the less efficient yet better-suited methods. In summary, OTF-AI-TGA combined with this novel analysis approach is intended to provide the first crucial step in a hierarchical computational protocol for studying large molecules such as dyes.

Efficient geometric integrators for the linear and nonlinear time-dependent Schrödinger equation

Many physical and chemical reactions are driven by nonadiabatic processes, which imply the breakdown of the celebrated Born-Oppenheimer approximation. To understand these processes, experimentalists employ spectroscopic techniques. However, the obtained results are difficult to decipher, and accurate molecular quantum dynamics simulations are used to interpret the results.The second-order split-operator algorithm is one of the most popular numerical methods for simulating the nonadiabatic quantum dynamics because it is explicit, easy to implement, and it preserves many geometric properties of the exact solution. However, the second-order accuracy of this algorithm makes it unaffordable if very accurate results are needed, as tiny time steps are required. To remedy this lack of efficiency, we use composition methods to generate higher-order split-operator algorithms.Although compositions methods increase the accuracy of the standard split-operator algorithm to arbitrary even orders of convergence, the efficiency of the obtained algorithms is still questioned because the computational cost per time step increases drastically with the order of convergence. Therefore, using one- and three-dimensional models of NaI and pyrazine, respectively, we investigate the convergence, efficiency, and geometric properties of these high-order integrators and find that they are, for accurate simulations, more efficient than the standard split-operator algorithm while still preserving the same geometric properties. Besides employing these integrators for simulating the nonadiabatic quantum dynamics, we also explore quantum control and, more specifically, local control theory. This technique uses the instantaneous dynamics of the system to compute an electric field, which interacts with the system in order to drive the state in a desired direction. Because the electric field is obtained from the state itself, we demonstrate that this technique translates into a nonlinear time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Although it is geometric and second-order accurate for simple nonlinearities, the standard split-operator algorithm loses its time-reversal symmetry and second-order accuracy when employed for more complicated nonlinear time-dependent Schrödinger equations. One example of the latter is the one appearing in local control theory.We demonstrate that this lack of generality of the standard split-operator algorithm occurs due to its explicit nature. Thus, we propose two strategies to overcome this issue: First, we completely abandon the split-operator algorithm and present a numerical method based on the implicit midpoint method instead. Second, we make the standard split-operator algorithm implicit, which avoids abandoning the split-operator algorithm altogether. The accuracy and geometric properties of both strategies are then numerically verified using a two-dimensional model of retinal, a molecule whose photochemistry triggers the first event in the biological process of vision. The results demonstrate that both approaches yield second-order methods that preserve all the geometric properties of the exact solution. Because the developed integrators are symmetric, we further improve their accuracy and efficiency using composition methods.

Integrated computational approaches for spectroscopic studies of molecular systems in the gas phase and in solution: pyrimidine as a test case

An integrated computational approach built on quantum mechanical (QM) methods, purposely tailored inter-and intra-molecular force fields and continuum solvent models combined with time-independent and timedependent schemes to account for nuclear motion effects is applied to the spectroscopic investigation of pyrimidine in the gas phase as well as in aqueous and CCl4 solutions. Accurate post-Hartree-Fock methodologies are employed to compute molecular structure, harmonic vibrational frequencies, energies and oscillator strengths for electronic transitions in order to validate the accuracy of approaches rooted into density functional theory with emphasis also on hybrid QM/QM' models. Within the time-independent approaches, IR spectra are computed including anharmonicities through perturbative corrections while UV-vis line-shapes are simulated accounting for the vibrational structure; in both cases, the environmental effects are described by continuum models. The effects of conformational flexibility, including solvent dynamics, are described through time-dependent models based on purposely DFT-tailored force fields applied to molecular dynamics simulations and on QM computations of spectroscopic properties. Such procedures are exploited to simulate IR and UV-vis spectra of pyrimidine in the gas phase and in solutions, leading in all cases to good agreement with experimental observations and allowing to dissect different effects underlying spectral phenomena.
