Hardware / Software Architectural and Technological Exploration for Energy-Efficient and Reliable Biomedical Devices

Nowadays, the ubiquity of smart appliances in our everyday lives is increasingly strengthening the links between humans and machines. Beyond making our lives easier and more convenient, smart devices are now playing an important role in personalized healthcare delivery. This technological breakthrough is particularly relevant in a world where population aging and unhealthy habits have made non-communicable diseases the first leading cause of death worldwide according to international public health organizations. In this context, smart health monitoring systems termed Wireless Body Sensor Nodes (WBSNs), represent a paradigm shift in the healthcare landscape by greatly lowering the cost of long-term monitoring of chronic diseases, as well as improving patients' lifestyles. WBSNs are able to autonomously acquire biological signals and embed on-node Digital Signal Processing (DSP) capabilities to deliver clinically-accurate health diagnoses in real-time, even outside of a hospital environment. Energy efficiency and reliability are fundamental requirements for WBSNs, since they must operate for extended periods of time, while relying on compact batteries. These constraints, in turn, impose carefully designed hardware and software architectures for hosting the execution of complex biomedical applications. In this thesis, I develop and explore novel solutions at the architectural and technological level of the integrated circuit design domain, to enhance the energy efficiency and reliability of current WBSNs. Firstly, following a top-down approach driven by the characteristics of biomedical algorithms, I perform an architectural exploration of a heterogeneous and reconfigurable computing platform devoted to bio-signal analysis. By interfacing a shared Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Array (CGRA) accelerator, this domain-specific platform can achieve higher performance and energy savings, beyond the capabilities offered by a baseline multi-processor system. More precisely, I propose three CGRA architectures, each contributing differently to the maximization of the application parallelization. The proposed Single, Multi and Interleaved-Datapath CGRA designs allow the developed platform to achieve substantial energy savings of up to 37%, when executing complex biomedical applications, with respect to a multi-core-only platform. Secondly, I investigate how the modeling of technology reliability issues in logic and memory components can be exploited to adequately adjust the frequency and supply voltage of a circuit, with the aim of optimizing its computing performance and energy efficiency. To this end, I propose a novel framework for workload-dependent Bias Temperature Instability (BTI) impact analysis on biomedical application results quality. Remarkably, the framework is able to determine the range of safe circuit operating frequencies without introducing worst-case guard bands. Experiments highlight the possibility to safely raise the frequency up to 101% above the maximum obtained with the classical static timing analysis. Finally, through the study of several well-known biomedical algorithms, I propose an approach allowing energy savings by dynamically and unequally protecting an under-powered data memory in a new way compared to regular error protection schemes. This solution relies on the Dynamic eRror compEnsation And Masking (DREAM) technique that reduces by approximately 21% the energy consumed by traditional error correction codes.

Hardware/Software Co-Design of Ultra-Low Power Biomedical Monitors

Ongoing changes in world demographics and the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyles are imposing a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery. Nowadays, chronic ailments such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and diabetes, represent the most common causes of death according to the World Health Organization. It is estimated that 63% of deaths worldwide are directly or indirectly related to these non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and by 2030 it is predicted that the health delivery cost will reach an amount comparable to 75% of the current GDP. In this context, technologies based on Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSNs) effectively alleviate this burden enabling the conception of wearable biomedical monitors composed of one or several devices connected through a Wireless Body Sensor Network (WBSN). Energy efficiency is of paramount importance for these devices, which must operate for prolonged periods of time with a single battery charge. In this thesis I propose a set of hardware/software co-design techniques to drastically increase the energy efficiency of bio-medical monitors. To this end, I jointly explore different alternatives to reduce the required computational effort at the software level while optimizing the power consumption of the processing hardware by employing ultra-low power multi-core architectures that exploit DSP application characteristics. First, at the sensor level, I study the utilization of a heartbeat classifier to perform selective advanced DSP on state-of-the-art ECG bio-medical monitors. To this end, I developed a framework to design and train real-time, lightweight heartbeat neuro-fuzzy classifiers, detail- ing the required optimizations to efficiently execute them on a resource-constrained platform. Then, at the network level I propose a more complex transmission-aware WBSN for activity monitoring that provides different tradeoffs between classification accuracy and transmission volume. In this work, I study the combination of a minimal set of WSNs with a smartphone, and propose two classification schemes that trade accuracy for transmission volume. The proposed method can achieve accuracies ranging from 88% to 97% and can save up to 86% of wireless transmissions, outperforming the state-of-the-art alternatives. Second, I propose a synchronization-based low-power multi-core architecture for bio-signal processing. I introduce a hardware/software synchronization mechanism that allows to achieve high energy efficiency while parallelizing the execution of multi-channel DSP applications. Then, I generalize the methodology to support bio-signal processing applications with an arbitrarily high degree of parallelism. Due to the benefits of SIMD execution and software pipelining, the architecture can reduce its power consumption by up 38% when compared to an equivalent low-power single-core alternative. Finally, I focused on the optimization of the multi-core memory subsystem, which is the major contributor to the overall system power consumption. First I considered a hybrid memory subsystem featuring a small reliable partition that can operate at ultra-low voltage enabling low-power buffering of data and obtaining up to 50% energy savings. Second, I explore a two-level memory hierarchy based on non-volatile memories (NVM) that allows for aggressive fine-grained power gating enabled by emerging low-power NVM technologies and monolithic 3D integration. Experimental results show that, by adopting this memory hierarchy, power consumption can be reduced by 5.42x in the DSP stage.

Adding limited reconfigurability to superscalar processors

For the last thirty years, electronics, at first built with discrete components, and then as Integrated Circuits (IC), have brought diverse and lasting improvements to our quality of life. Examples might include digital calculators, automotive and airplane control assistance, almost all electrical household appliances, and the almost ubiquitous Personal Computer. Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) were traditionally used for their high performance and low manufacturing cost, and were designed specifically for a single application with large volumes. But as lower product lifetimes and the pressures of fast marketing increased, ASICs' high design cost pushed for their replacement by Microprocessors. These processors, capable of implementing any functionality through a change in software, are thus often called General Purpose Processors. General purpose processors are used for everyday computing tasks, and found in all personal computers. They are also often used as building blocks for scientific supercomputers. Superscalar processors such as these require ever more processing power to run complex simulations, video games or versatile telecoms services. In the case of embedded applications, e.g. for portable devices, both performance and power consumption must be taken into account. In a bid to adapt a processor to some extent to select applications, fully reconfigurable logic can greatly improve the performance of a processor, since it is shaped for the best possible execution with the available resources. However, as reconfigurable logic is far slower than custom logic, this gain is possible only for some specific applications with large parallelism, after a detailed study of the algorithm. Even though this process can be automated, it still requires large computing resources, and cannot be performed at run time. To reduce the loss in speed compared to custom logic, it is possible to limit the reconfigurability to increase the breadth of applications where performance can be improved. However, as the application space increases, a careful analysis and design of the reconfigurability is required to minimize the speed loss, notably when dynamic reconfiguration is considered. As a case study, we analyze the feasibility of adding limited reconfigurability to the Floating Point Units (FPUs) of a general purpose processor. These rather large units execute all floating point operations, and may also be used for integer multiplication. If an application contains few or infrequent instructions that must be executed by the FPU, this idle hardware only increases power consumption without enhancing performance. This is often the case in non-scientific applications and even many recent and detailed video games which make heavy use of hardware display accelerators for 3D graphics. In a fast multiplier such as can be found in the FPU of a high performance processor, the logic to perform multiplication is a large tree of compressors to add all the partial products together. It is possible to add logic to allow the reconfiguration of part of this tree as several extra Arithmetic and Logic Units (ALU). This requires a detailed timing analysis for both the reconfigurable FPU and the extra ALUs, taking into account effects such as added wires and longer critical paths. Finally, the algorithm to decide when and how to reconfigure must be studied, in terms of eciency and complexity. The results of adding this limited reconfigurability to a mainstream superscalar processor over a large set of compute intensive benchmarks show gains of up to 56% in the best case, with an average gain of 11%. The application to an idealized huge top processor still shows slightly positive average gains, as the limits of available parallelism are reached, bounded by both the application and many of the characteristics of the processor. In all cases, binary compatibility is maintained, allowing the re-use of all existing software. We show that adding limited reconfigurability to a general purpose superscalar processor can produce interesting gains over a wide range of applications while maintaining binary compatibility, and without large modifications to the original design. Limited reconfigurability is worthwhile as it increases the design space, allowing gains to apply to a larger set of applications. These gains are achieved through careful study and optimization of the reconfigurable logic and the decision algorithm.

Hardware/Software Co-Design and Reliability Analysis of Ultra-Low Power Biomedical Devices

Smart health monitoring devices, known as Wireless Body Sensor Nodes (WBSN) are transforming today's health-care landscape, shifting it from traditional hospital-based methods toward more personalized approaches. Their demand is ever-increasing in the modern world, where an overwhelming majority of deaths are caused by chronic cardiovascular diseases. WBSNs provide low-cost, unobtrusive and wearable solutions for continuous health-monitoring. These small autonomous devices are capable of acquiring, processing and wirelessly transmitting biological signals to medical personnel, typically relying on a limited on-board power source. Since WBSNs are desired to operate over prolonged periods, producing potentially critical data, their reliability and energy efficiency are of paramount importance. State-of-the-Art (SoA) WBSNs are able to process on-board the sensed bio-signals, like Electrocardiograms (ECG), transmitting only compact sets of clinically-relevant features instead of the entire acquired signal. This scenario moves the energy bottleneck of such devices from the transmission link to the computation-intensive Bio-Signal Processing (BSP) segment. To improve their energy efficiency, in this thesis, I propose strategies ranging from architectural to technology levels. First, I explore the applicability of a relaxed-reliability computing paradigm resulting from ultra-low voltage operations. I begin by modeling memory failures ensuing from voltage over-scaling and fabrication variability-related issues, studying their effects at the application level. To this end, I introduce novel data significance-based protection approaches for countering failures in embedded memories, showcasing up to 20% reduction in the energy budget compared to existing solutions. In addition, I devise lightweight hardware- and software-level error monitoring solutions that cope with memory failures, when unprotected. Experimental results demonstrate that these strategies ensure minimal performance degradation, achieving up to 24% energy savings with respect to the SoA. In the second part of the thesis, I employ novel approaches featuring heterogeneous WBSNs with a reconfigurable accelerator and emerging memory technologies. I commence by performing a study to identify the computationally intensive segments of BSP algorithms that can potentially be accelerated on a reconfigurable fabric. I adopt a top-down approach to do so, extracting kernels from the high-level application code, eventually optimizing and mapping them for execution on a time- and resource-shared Coarse Grain Reconfigurable Array (CGRA). I prove the effectiveness of the proposed platform by exhibiting up to 11x performance improvement and 37% energy savings over the SoA. Then, I combine relaxed-reliability computation and CGRA-based WBSNs, with my experiments exhibiting as much as 70% reduction in energy consumption compared to the current SoA, while assuring safe system operation. I conclude this work by exploring the integration of emerging Resistive Random Access Memory (ReRAM) technologies to traditional WBSN platforms, aimed at reducing their ever-increasing leakage energy consumption. In this regard, I report the memory-level endurance challenges faced due to aging and propose lightweight solutions for prolonged device usage. Obtained results highlight up to 65% increase in energy efficiency with respect to the SoA, including the overheads required for extended device functionality.
