Remotely-Powered Front-End at 2.45 GHz for Real-Time Continuous Temperature Sensing

Remote powering and power management of a passive sensor system employing antenna-rectifier co-design is presented. The operating frequency of the system is chosen at 2.45 GHz in order to reduce the antenna size. A co-design approach enables the coupling of the antenna and the rectifier for maximum power efficiency. The presented tag consists of an antenna, RF rectifier, power management circuit and a ring oscillator. Temperature sensing with the passive sensor system is demonstrated by the on-chip ring oscillator. The RF sensitivity of the integrated sensor system is -11.4 dBm while the average DC power consumption is measured as 25 mu W. The measurements prove the effectiveness of the method for maximum transfer efficiency and the use of ring-oscillator based temperature sensor for in-vivo temperature monitoring.

Far-Field UHF Remotely Powered Front-End for Patient Monitoring with Wearable Antenna

The design of a wearable antenna for UHF band at 900 MHz with an integrated front-end for a wireless sensor system targeting remote patient monitoring is presented. A wearable antenna for human body with -7.2 dB gain is demonstrated using five layer torso model. The antenna can deliver 25 mu W of power to the rectifier at 4.6 meters distance from the base station emitting P-EIRP=4 W. Local power management circuitry consumes a total power of 4 mu W while delivering 10 mu W of power for the sensors of the wireless sensor system. The system designed with 0.18 mu m CMOS process demonstrates the performance of the frontend together with 3D electromagnetic simulation results of the wearable antenna.

A System for Wireless Power Transfer of Micro-Systems In-Vivo Implantable in Freely Moving Animals

A system for wireless power transfer of micro-systems in-vivo implantable in small animals is presented. The described solution uses a servo-controlled transmitter moved under the animal moving space. The solution minimizes the power irradiation while enabling animal speeds up to 30 cm/s. An x-y movable magnetic coil transmits the required power with a level able to keep constant the received energy. A permanent magnet on board of the implantable micro-system and an array of magnetic sensors form a coil tracking system capable of an alignment accuracy as good as 1 cm. The power is transferred over the optimized remote powering link at 13.56 MHz. The received ac signal is converted to dc voltage with a passive full-wave integrated rectifier and the voltage regulator supplies 1.8 V for the implantable sensor system. Experimental measurement on a complete prototype verifies the system performance.

A system for wireless power transfer and data communication of implantable bio-monitoring systems is presented. The proposed solution uses a servo-controlled power transmitter moved under the animal moving space. An x-y movable magnetic coil transmits the required power with a level able to keep constant the received energy by the bio-sensor system. The power is transferred via the optimized remote powering link at 13.56 MHz. The received AC signal is converted to DC voltage with a passive full-wave integrated rectifier and the voltage regulator supplies 1.8 V for the implantable sensor system. The sensor control and read-out circuit measures the current on the bio-sensors and transmit the data to the transmitter. The sensor data is transmitted to an external reader by a low-power OOK transmitter and received by a custom designed receiver at 869 MHz. The results are shown in a tablet computer in real time continuously. The long-term characterization of the implantable system is verified by a fully bio-compatible packaged implant with 30 days measurement. A complete prototype is also presented to prove the overall system performance with experimental in-vitro measurement.
