Standard ion transfer potential at the water|butyronitrile interface

Butyronitrile is an organic solvent stable enough to be used in photochemical reactions at liquid/liquid interfaces. However, it provides a rather short polarisation window making the analysis of ion transfer across the water|butyronitrile interface challenging. Here, steady-state cyclic voltammetry, at microhole-supported micro-interfaces, was used to measure Gibbs energies of transfer. A linear relationship between the standard Gibbs energies of ion partition for the water|butyronitrile interface and the water|1,2-dichloroethane and water|nitrobencene interfaces was found, making easy to extrapolate the Gibbs energy of other ions from this empiric correlation.

Immobilized pH Gradient Gel Cell To Study the pH Dependence of Drug Lipophilicity

An experimental setup to study the pH dependence of standard ion-transfer potentials at the water/NPOE interface is presented. The system is composed of a micro-hole generated by laser photoablation in a 12-μm polyethylene terephthalate film, the aqueous phase consisting of a commercial immobilized pH gradient gel reswelled in electrolyte solution and a droplet of organic solution. Two electrodes are used, an Ag/AgCl aqueous electrode and an Ag/AgTPBCl organic electrode. This setup is applied to the study of two ionizable compounds (pyridine, 2,4-dinitrophenol). Thermodynamic parameters such as the standard transfer potential, the Gibbs energy of transfer, and the partition coefficients of the ionized forms as well as the neutral forms of these drug compounds are evaluated by differential pulse voltammetry. The data obtained are summarized in ionic partition diagrams, which are a useful tool for predicting and interpreting the transfer behavior of ionized drugs at the liquid/liquid interfaces mimicking the biological membranes.

Evaluation of Gibbs Energy of Dioxouranium Transfer at an Electrified Liquid vertical bar Liquid Interface Supported on a Microhole

Herein is reported the determination of the Gibbs energy of dioxouranium (UO22+) transfer across an interface between two immiscible electrolytic solutions (ITIES), water and 1,2-dichloroethane, that was supported at a 25 mu m diameter microhole, by means of linear sweep voltammetry. Through the use of minimal to no supporting electrolyte, this technique is able to observe ion transfer (IT) of extremely hydrophilic ions voltammetrically. As the applied potential in the aqueous phase became increasingly positive the UO22+ ions were driven into the organic phase resulting in IT. The standard transfer potential, Delta(w)(o)phi(o)' was determined to be 0.865 V through a novel curve fitting methodology applied directly to the voltammogram. The Gibbs energy of transfer was calculated to be 167 kJ.mol(-1). Additionally, the kinetics of IT was explored using a Butler-Volmer model through finite element analysis, whereby the voltammetric current response owning to migration effects in the experimental CVs was approximated in the overlaid, simulated CVs using slow reaction kinetics.
