The “Green Lighting” research project, initiated at the Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory (LESO-PB) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), is aiming at an energy efficient integration of advanced daylighting and electric lighting systems. This communication presents the latest developments within this project and discusses possible consequences for offices in tropical climates. A computer model of a Singapore office room equipped with an Anidolic Integrated Ceiling, for which daylight autonomies have recently been calculated at National University of Singapore, has been developed using the RELUX Vision lighting software. An appropriate complementary electric lighting system for this office room is suggested and its performance in terms of visual comfort is discussed. It is shown that this electric lighting system would lead to a lighting power density lower than 5 W/m² and would consume less than 1 kWh of electricity per day.

Energieeffiziente Bürobeleuchtung - Das Projekt "Green Lighting"

The „Green Lighting“ project, started in 2006 at the Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory of Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), explores different ways to combine modern day- and artificial lighting technologies. The main objective of the project is the development of energy-efficient integrated solutions which minimize the electric lighting load while maximizing the building occupants’ visual comfort and wellbeing. This article gives on overview of recent developments within the project’s framework. It comes to the conclusion that lighting power densities of less than 5 W/m² are already achievable in today’s office rooms, provided that daylight is used intensively.

Assessing the saving potential of blind controller via multi-objective optimization

This paper presents the results of computational experiments where multi-objective algorithms were used to tune a controller for blind movements in a residential building and a room of the LESO (Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory) experimental building. The blind controller, which is based on fuzzy logic, was optimized not only in terms of energy consumption but also in terms of thermal comfort. The goal is to show saving potential for intelligent blind controller in a real world example rather than in tailored idealized test rooms. Therefore, a state of the art simulation program with a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm was combined. It was found that with elementary control systems, like schedules for the lighting in a building, almost 40% of the energy could be saved. With the help of more advanced controllers this can be further increased. Also discussed in this paper are the results and the feasibility of implementing such a controller.
