Constraining the photon coupling of ultra-light dark-matter axion-like particles by polarization variations of parsec-scale jets in active galaxies

Dark matter may consist of axion-like particles with ultra-low masses. Two-photon interactions of these particles affect the polarization of radiation propagating through the dark matter. Coherent oscillations of the Bose condensate of the particles induce periodic changes in the plane of polarisation of emission passing through the condensate. We estimate this effect and analyze MOJAVE VLBA polarization observations of bright downstream features in the parsec-scale jets of active galaxies. Through the non-observation of periodic changes in the polarization angle, we are able to constrain the photon coupling of the ultra-light dark-matter axion-like particles at the level of less than or similar to 10(-12) GeV-1 for masses between similar to 5 x 10(-23) eV and similar to 1.2 x 10(-21) eV.

We discuss the influence of strong CP-violating effects in invisible-axion models on electroweak baryogenesis. We find that they can be important only if the electroweak phase transition (EPT) occurs simultaneously with the chirality-breaking phase transition in QCD. The predicted baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) might be of order of the observable one only if there is no entropy production in the EPT. At the same time the dark-matter constraints put a lower bound on the temperature after the EPT, so that it is impossible to satisfy simultaneously both requirements (BAU and axion dark matter). We conclude that possible strong CP violation plays no role in electroweak baryogenesis, unless there exists some yet unknown mechanism for the BAU generation, producing baryons at a rate which has to be at least 3 orders of magnitude higher than the sphaleron-induced rate. In this kind of hypothetical scenario there is a prediction of the axionic dark matter in the Universe from the very existence of the baryon excess while the dark-matter density is generally of order or greater than that of the observed baryonic matter. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Next decade of sterile neutrino studies

We review the status of sterile neutrino dark matter and discuss astrophysical and cosmological bounds on its properties as well as future prospects for its experimental searches. We argue that if sterile neutrinos are the dominant fraction of dark matter, detecting an astrophysical signal from their decay (the so-called 'indirect detection') may be the only way to identify these particles experimentally. However, it may be possible to check the dark matter origin of the observed signal unambiguously using its characteristic properties and/or using synergy with accelerator experiments, searching for other sterile neutrinos, responsible for neutrino flavor oscillations. We argue that to fully explore this possibility a dedicated cosmic mission - an X-ray spectrometer - is needed. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

CMB photons shedding light on dark matter

The annihilation or decay of Dark Matter (DM) particles could affect the thermal history of the universe and leave an observable signature in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. We update constraints on the annihilation rate of DM particles in the smooth cosmological background, using WMAP7 and recent small-scale CMB data. With a systematic analysis based on the Press-Schechter formalism, we also show that DM annihilation in halos at small redshift may explain entirely the reionization patterns observed in the CMB, under reasonable assumptions concerning the concentration and formation redshift of halos. We find that a mixed reionization model based on DM annihilation in halos as well as star formation at a redshift z similar or equal to 6.5 could simultaneously account for CMB observations and satisfy constraints inferred from the Gunn-Peterson effect. However, these models tend to reheat the inter-galactic medium (IGM) well above observational bounds: by including a realistic prior on the IGM temperature at low redshift and allowing most of the reionization to be due to star formation, we find stronger cosmological bounds on the annihilation cross-section than with the CMB alone.
