SciFi detector and associated method for real-time determination of profile and output factor for small fields in stereotactic radiotherapy

Purpose For determining small-field profile and output factor during stereotactic radiotherapy quality assurance (QA) procedures, we propose a novel system based on the scintillating fiber (SciFi) detector with output image acquisition and processing to allow real-time monitoring of profile and output factor. Materials and methods The employed detector is a SciFi detector made of tissue-equivalent scintillating plastic fibers arranged in 6-layer fiber ribbons with a fiber pitch of 275 mu m in each layer. The scintillating signal at the detector output is acquired by a sCMOS (scientific complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) camera and represents the projected field profile along the fibers axis. An iterative reconstruction method of the field from its projected profile based on a priori knowledge of some features of the radiation field defined by the stereotactic cones is suggested. The detector with implemented data processing has been tested in clinical conditions, for determining beam profiles and output factors, using cone collimators of different sizes from 4 to 15 mm diameter. The detector under test was placed at 1.4 cm depth and 98.6 cm source to surface distance (SSD) in a water-equivalent phantom and irradiated by a 6 MV photon beam. Results The reconstructed field profiles obtained from the detector are coherent with data from EBT3 radiochromic films, with differences within +/- 0.32 mm for both the FWHM and the penumbra region. For real-time determination of the field output factor, the measured data are also in good agreement with data independently determined by the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) based on radiochromic films and thermoluminescent 1 x 1 mm(2) micro-cubes dosimeters (TLD). The differences are within +/- 1.6% for all the tested cone sizes. Conclusions We propose and have tested a SciFi plastic scintillating detector with an optimized signal processing method to characterize small fields defined by cone collimators. It allows the determination of key field parameters such as full width at half maximum (FWHM) and field output factors. The results are consistent with those independently measured using TLD and radiochromic films. As the SciFi detector does not require a correction factor, it is in line with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) TRS-483 recommendations, and can be suitable for online QA of small radiation fields used in photon beam radiotherapy, and is compatible with MRI-LINAC.

Analysis of a Novel Toroidal Configuration for Hadron Therapy Gantries

Hadron therapy refers to a medical treatment that uses hadron beams (i.e. protons and ions) to deliver localized energy that suppresses cancerous cells, sparing the neighbouring healthy tissues from unwanted radiation. The major technical components of a hadron therapy centre are the particle accelerator (cyclotron, synchrotron, or linac) and the beam delivery system that controls, shapes and orients the particles towards the area to be treated. The beam delivery can consist of fixed transfer lines, or it can include a gantry, a transfer line that rotates around the patient and allows radiation from multiple directions. The present work investigates a new toroidal gantry for hadron therapy, named GaToroid. This novel gantry configuration allows the dose delivery from a discrete number of angles avoiding magnets as well as patient rotation. Compared to traditional gantries that require rotating magnets, this improvement is made possible by a toroidal magnet operating in steady-state. This design constitutes the ideal conditions for the use of superconductors to generate a significantly higher magnetic field compared to normal-conducting solutions, as well as to reduce the weight and footprint of the magnets. The study of a GaToroid system requires the integration of several aspects of physics and engineering. In this framework, the focus of this research is on the design of the superconducting coils integrated with beam optics and particle tracking analyses. The first part of the thesis illustrates the optimization of the toroidal magnet. Coupling two-dimensional particle tracking and magnetic field calculations, an algorithm was developed to identify optimal gantry configurations that maximize the energy acceptance of the system. Two solutions composed of 16 coils, differing in high and low values of engineering current density, were investigated. In line with current clinical requirements, the beams converged at the isocenter within 1 mm over the whole treatment energy spectrum for both configurations. The second part of the thesis describes the algorithm implemented for the two- and three-dimensional particle tracking. Building upon the results of the magnetic optimization, a linear beam optics formalism was developed to determine the focusing properties of GaToroid. The third part of the thesis focuses on the engineering design of the low current density solution. Using two thermo-electric models, lumped and one-dimensional, the Nb-Ti and ReBCO cable geometries were validated, together with the quench protection system. Furthermore, analytical and numerical studies on mechanics made it possible to estimate the overall footprint and weight of the system. Results show that, compared with the state-of-the-art gantries, the proposed GaToroid solution has the potential to be more compact and lighter by at least a factor two. Finally, the last part of the thesis describes the design of a scaled-down demonstrator wound with ReBCO tapes. Studies on quench protection, mechanics and experimental implementation aimed at testing the use of ReBCO technology for GaToroid coils are discussed. In conclusion, this work presents the first overall description of a GaToroid system, ranging from the analytical definition, magnetic optimization, particle tracking and magnet engineering. The investigation of this new toroidal paradigm for gantries represents a quantum step toward more compact and less expensive solutions for hadron therapy centres.

Contribution à l'étude des modes de rayonnement acoustique d'une structure

Noise radiated by different industrial structures that surround us in daily life are more and more considered as environmental pollution. Standards defining a tolerable sound level for each of these noise sources are regularly called into question and respecting them becomes an additional constraint for manufacturers. The last decades have seen the increasing development of means used to fight these noise disturbances. The wide diversity of noises perceived as harmful has contributed to the progressive increase in specificity and efficiency of solutions proposed to reduce the disturbances. For some applications, passive solutions, based on the use of materials capable of absorbing or deviating acoustic or vibratory waves, have progressively been replaced by "active" solutions, based on the generation of an acoustic wave of opposite phase to the disturbing one radiated by the noise source. Power transformers are sources for which passive solutions (anti-noise walls) are usually expensive and not very efficient, particularly at low frequency. Furthermore, characteristics of noise radiated by transformers (low frequency tone noise) are such that they are particularly well suited for the implementation of an active solution. Typically, an active control system dedicated to transformers (feedforward) is composed of actuators, used to generate the anti-noise and usually located near the tank, sensors, used to measure the attenuation obtained and to provide a reference signal, and a controller used to drive the actuators as a function of the information collected by the sensors. When the sensors are microphones, they are usually moved away from the noise source, in such a way that they pick up acoustic pressure that is representative of the noise propagated far away. In the vicinity of the source, local acoustic phenomena can occur which are not propagated far away. A microphone located near the noise source would therefore pick up an acoustic pressure that did not necessarily represent the one that effectively exists far away, the area where we are in fact seeking to reduce the noise. These phenomena, frequently grouped under the term "nearfield" tend to decrease the performance of the control system, owing to the fact that the controller seeks in this case to reduce an acoustic pressure which is not representative of the noise to be reduced. In practice, the significant amount of wiring required as a result of the positioning of the microphones in the far field, has a non-negligible effect on the cost of the system. The possibility of bringing the sensors closer to the source is sufficiently advantageous to envisage to studying the feasibility and the resulting consequences. The present approach consists in representing the primary field radiated by a vibrating structure in terms of a set of "acoustic radiation modes". The use of radiation modes to characterise the behaviour of a structure has received increasing attention since the beginning of 90's, especially for active control applications. Usually, this approach consists in representing the radiated power in terms of a set of surface velocity distributions, called radiation modes, that have the property of radiating independently of each other. Radiation modes result from diagonalization of a discrete expression of the radiation operator. We propose here to study the consequences on the radiation modes of a structure from bringing the microphones closer to it. We will study how the acoustic field varies with the distance and how this can be used to obtain a model, the complexity of which is adapted to the observation distance.

Propriétés magnétiques de nanostructures de cobalt adsorbées

This thesis reports results on magnetic properties of supported cobalt nanostructures. The nanostructures were grown on single crystal metal surface by Molecular Beam Epitaxy in an Ultra High Vacuum chamber. Our experimental setup is based on two in situ measurement techniques. The first is the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) allowing to investigate the nanostructure morphology. The second, called Surface Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (SMOKE), probes the magnetism of the nanostructures. By combining the data obtained with both techniques we were able to investigate the magnetism of 2D nanoparticles down to the atomic level. The first aim of the thesis consisted in disclosing the role played by the differently coordinated atoms in determining the Magnetic Energy Anisotropy in 2D nanostructures. To this purpose, we performed experiments on the Co/Pt(111) system, chosen as a model system since the Pt surface is well known to increase the out-of-plane uniaxial anisotropy as well as the magnetic moment of the Co islands. A preliminary work has been devoted to the growth of the Co islands as a function of the deposition and annealing temperatures. As a result, we learned to grow three different island's shapes : ramified, compact and double-layer islands. We then concentrated on the magnetism of these islands. Due to the nonlinear relationship between perimeter length and surface area, we were able to distinguish the different contributions to the anisotropy energy of surface and perimeter atoms. We found that the magnetic anisotropy in 2D Co nanostructures is predominantly due to the low-coordinated edge atoms, for which the anisotropy energy can be as large as 20 times the bulk value. This finding opens new possibilities to separately tune the anisotropy and moment of nanostructures. To exemplify this, and to illustrate once more the role of perimeter atoms, we produced Co island with a non-magnetic Pt core. As expected, these bimetallic islands have identical anisotropy and lower magnetic moment to their equally shaped pure Co counterpart. The second aim we focused on was the investigation of the magnetic properties of ultra-high density arrays of nanostructures created by self-assembly. We chose Co/Au(788) as a model system since the nanoscopic Co dots were found to have a very narrow size distribution and to be placed onto a lattice which is phase coherent on a macroscopic length scale. Moreover, the array has a density of 26 Tdot/in2 which allows the investigation of inter-particle interaction in ultra high density arrays. We showed that the narrow size distribution of the dots corresponds to an unprecedented narrow Magnetic Anisotropy Energy distribution with 35% width at half of the maximum. Moreover, we demonstrated the weak magnetic coupling between the Co dots despite their high density. In parallel to these fundamental researches, we developed a new experimental setup that will replace the current one. We designed a UHV chamber equipped with a homemade variable temperature STM combined with a SMOKE experiment. A quadrupole, focused on the sample, generates a 0.35 T magnetic field. This field is one order of magnitude larger than the present one and can be uniformly rotated in the plane of the quadrupole. Furthermore, the design of the new chamber allows STM imaging in this magnetic field. In this report, we present the adopted solutions as well as the first tests of the components (STM, SMOKE, cryostat).
