Powder additive pulsed Nd:YAG laser (wavelength 1064 nm), with the aim of preparing AM of such material. The influence of oxygen content in the initial silicon powders on the continuous tracks morphology was investigated. It was found that the initial oxygen content of the processed powders must be lower than 0.1 wt% to produce a smooth silicon melted track. This result is explained as due to the formation of gaseous manufacturing (AM) of materials is affected by the oxygen present in the raw material, especially if they possess a native oxide. Processing and characterization of a W–2Y material for fusion power reactors

A W-2Y material has been produced by powder metallurgy techniques including mechanical alloying of W and Y elemental powders in an argon atmosphere, followed by hot isostatic pressing of the milled powder at 1320 degrees C under a pressure of 200 MPa for 2 h. It was found that the mechanical alloying time should not exceed 40 h in order to achieve a homogeneous distribution of small powder particles and to limit air contamination and carbon/WC contamination by the jar and ball materials. The density of the ingots was found to be about 97% the theoretical one. It was observed that the microstructure of the compacted material is composed of grains having a bimodal size distribution, with mean sizes around 50 and 150 nm. In addition, the material contains an inhomogeneous distribution of oxide particles with a mean size ranging from 2 to 20 nm. In situ TEM chemical analyses revealed that the entire content of yttrium reacted with oxygen to form nanometric oxides whose composition corresponds to Y2O3. Charpy impact tests revealed that the material is brittle at the high temperature of about 1000 degrees C. Tensile tests confirmed that the material is brittle at 1000 degrees C but ductile at 1300 degrees C, indicating that the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature should lie between 1100 and 1200 degrees C. Welding-induced microstructure in austenitic stainless steels before and after neutron irradiation

The effects of neutron irradiation on the microstructure of welded joints made of austenitic stainless steels have been investigated. The materials were welded AISI 304 and AISI 347, so-called test weld materials, and irradiated with neutrons at 300 degrees C to 0.3 and 1.0 dpa. In addition, an AISI 304 type from a decommissioned pressurised water reactor, so-called in-service material, which had accumulated a maximum dose of 0.35 dpa at about 300 degrees C, was investigated. The microstructure of heat-affected zones and base materials was analysed before and after irradiation, using transmission electron microscopy. Neutron diffraction was performed for internal stress measurements. It was found that the heat-affected zone contains, relative to the base material, a higher dislocation density, which relates well to a higher residual stress level and, after irradiation, a higher irradiation-induced defect density. In both materials, the irradiation-induced defects are of the same type, consisting in black dots and Frank dislocation loops. Careful analysis of the irradiation-induced defect contrast was performed and it is explained why no stacking fault tetrahedra could be identified. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The materials are welded AISI 304 and AISI 347, so-called test weld materials, irradiated with neutrons at 573 K to doses of 0.3 and 1.0 dpa. In addition, an AISI 304 from a decommissioned pressurised water reactor, so-called in-service material, which had accumulated a maximum dose of 0.35 dpa at about 573 K, was investigated. The mechanical properties of heat-affected zones and base materials were analysed before and after irradiation. Tensile parameters were determined at room temperature and at 573 K, for all materials and irradiation conditions. In the test weld materials it is found that radiation hardening is lower and loss of ductility is higher in the heat-affected zone than in the base material. In the in-service material radiation hardening is about the same in heat-affected zone and base material. After irradiation, deformation takes place by stacking faults and twins, at both room temperature and high temperature, contrary to un-irradiated materials, where deformation takes place by twinning at room temperature and by dislocation cells at high temperature.
