Efficient Hydrogen Oxidation Catalyzed by Strain-Engineered Nickel Nanoparticles

The hydroxide-exchange membrane fuel cell (HEMFC) is a promising energy conversion device. However, the development of HEMFC is hampered by the lack of platinum-group-metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). Now, a Ni catalyst is reported that exhibits the highest mass activity in HOR for a PGM-free catalyst as well as excellent activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This catalyst, Ni-H-2-2 %, was optimized through pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework precursor under a mixed N-2/H-2 atmosphere, which yielded carbon-supported Ni nanoparticles with different levels of strains. The Ni-H-2-2 % catalyst has an optimal level of strain, which leads to an optimal hydrogen binding energy and a high number of active sites.

Nanostructured Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting Reactions

At the dawn of the 21st century, mankind is facing an important energy challenge. Future energy demand can only be met by large scale exploitation of renewable energy resources. Solar energy is abundant, with a sufficient capacity for the growing energy demand. However, it is necessary to implement renewable energy storage means. Hydrogen is considered as the energy carrier of the future. An energy economy based on hydrogen is viable only if hydrogen is produced from sustainable means. Water electrolysis is the most promising technique to produce hydrogen directly from water. Yet, the efficiency is limited and electrocatalysts are required to drive both the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. Scarce and expensive materials are currently used to drive these reactions. It is, thus, imperative that efficient Earth-abundant catalysts are developed. Nanostructuring enhances the performance of inexpensive materials for water splitting and several catalysts were studied for this goal. Chapter 2 describes the application of nanostructuring technique to the archetypical catalysts that are nickel oxides for oxygen evolution. The prepared nanoparticles show superior activity towards oxygen evolution than that of their bulk counterpart. The ultrafine size of nanoparticles synthesized allowed the exposure of a higher number of active sites. The activity for oxygen evolution was, thus, significantly enhanced. We also detailed that short conditioning of the electrode improved the performance of the evaluated materials. In chapter 3 we carefully studied nanoparticles and nanowires of nickel phosphide. The catalysts is known to be really active for hydrogen evolution. Our group suspected that this material was, also, a potential oxygen evolution catalyst. We proved, for the first time, that nickel phosphide is a remarkable oxygen evolution catalyst. Under alkaline conditions, used for oxygen evolution, we observed an in-situ formation of a core-shell heterostructure, a typical nanostructure architecture. The surface oxidation of this material allowed high oxygen evolution capabilities. We concluded that careful oxidation of nanostructured materials, as observed for nickel phosphide, is essential for the preparation of future outstanding oxygen evolution catalysts. Chapter 4 details the fabrication of direct solar-to-fuel electrode using cobalt phosphide as hydrogen evolving catalyst. Instead of using the electrical energy provided by solar energy, solar irradiation on the developed assembly allows direct hydrogen production. The careful design of the light-sensitive electrode (photocathode) is detailed. Simple incorporation of cobalt phosphide by means of photodeposition alleviates the cost of the electrode fabrication. The assembled electrode is active for hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. In the chapter 5 we sought to fabricate a 3-dimensional hydrogen evolving catalyst. This nanostructure is based on polymer brushes on a flat conducting substrate. Once the brushes are grown on the substrate, a molybdenum sulfide catalyst is then incorporated by simple soaking technique. We were able to tune the loading of the catalyst and the corresponding activity by changing the polymer properties. The height of the polymer was modified as well as its packing density. The resulting activity proved superior to similar approaches and to previous reports on carefully engineered molybdenum sulfide catalysts.

The design and synthesis of nanostructured hydrogen oxidation reaction electrocatalysts for hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells

Hydrogen fuel cell is a promising green technology that transforms the chemical energy in hydrogen into electricity. Currently, most of the efforts are focused on developing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), however they are heavily dependent on rare and expensive platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts. In contrast, hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells (HEMFCs) work in alkaline media, thus allow the use of cheaper and more abundant non-PGM catalysts. However, there is no materials found suitable to catalyze the anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). Therefore, developing new, active and robust HOR catalysts in alkaline media is of paramount importance. Hereby, this dissertation presented my recent research works on preparation, characterization, and application of HOR catalysts for HEMFCs.Chapter 2 described the exploration of new earth-abundant HOR catalysts. A series of Ni-based compounds were synthesized and tested for HOR, among which Ni3N had the best activity. With further nano-engineering, the mass activity reached the highest at the time reported and the oxidation resistance of the supported version can be significantly improved. Spectroscopic evidence suggested that the downshift of the metal d band weakened the binding energies of the catalyst toward adsorbates, which accounted for the improved activity and stability of Ni3N/C.Chapter 3 demonstrated how to exploit strain-engineering for HOR catalysis. A series of Ni/C composites were prepared by pyrolyzing a Ni-based metal-organic framework (MOF). The optimal catalyst, Ni-H2-2%, has the highest mass activity (at the time reported) and abnormal high intrinsic activity. Characterizations using synchrotron XRD suggested that it was the distinct but relative optimal strain level of Ni-H2-2% that rendered it high activity.Chapter 4 is a complicated version of Chapter 3. The Ni catalysts were also prepared from the same Ni-based MOF with more complex synthesis conditions. The best catalyst, Ni-H2-NH3, possessed highest intrinsic activity among non-precious metals. Combining UPS, H2 chemisorption, isotopic studies, and electrochemical characterizations, the balanced hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and hydroxide binding energy (OHBE) is likely to be the origin of the high activity of Ni-H2-NH3. In the end, MEA measurements confirmed its excellent performance: for non-PGM MEA, the peak power density could reach 488 mW/cm2, 6.4 times higher than the previous record, which demonstrates the feasibility of efficient PGM-free HEMFCs.Chapter 5 exploited the interaction between PGMs and carbon support to improve their HOR activity. A porous N-doped carbon (pN-C) support was found to have prominent enhancement effect toward PGMs. Especially, the Pt0.25Ru0.75/pN-C had the up-to-date highest mass activity and intrinsic activity toward HOR. Using characterizations including XPS, UPS, H2 chemisorption, CO chemisorption, in situ surface-enhanced infrared adsorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS), and electrochemical characterizations, we concluded the superior HOR activity of Pt0.25Ru0.75/pN-C was a combination of interactions between Pt, Ru and the pN-C, with modulated the HBE and strengthened the H2O binding strength. The HEMFC using Pt0.25Ru0.75/pN-C also possessed great performance that far exceeded the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) 2022 target for HEMFCs, even though the testing condition was harsher. This work demonstrated the feasibility of HEMFC replacing PEMFC.

Pd Nanoparticles in a Supported Ionic Liquid Phase: Highly Stable Catalysts for Selective Acetylene Hydrogenation under Continuous-Flow Conditions

Monodispersed Pd nanoparticles of 5 and 10 nm were obtained via reduction of Pd(acac)2 dissolved in ionic liquid (IL), [bmim][PF6], or [bmimOH][TF2N], supported on carbon nanofibers (CNF) anchored to sintered metal fibers (SMF). Using [bmimOH][TF2N], the monodispersed Pd nanoparticles were synthesized by simple heating in the absence of an additional reducing agent. The supported ionic liquid phase Pd nanoparticles on the structured CNF/SMF composites were tested for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene and showed excellent long-term stability. The IL cation-anion network surrounding the nanoparticles suppressed the formation of active-site ensembles, known to catalyze the oligomerization of acetylene, responsible for the catalyst deactivation. The reaction rate was controlled by the internal diffusion of the reactants through the IL phase. The solubility of acetylene and ethylene in [bmim][PF6] was analyzed by NMR spectroscopy, which showed an order of magnitude difference. The lower solubility of ethylene compared to acetylene in the IL results in a high selectivity to ethylene, up to 85% at 150 °C. The catalytic system also demonstrated high efficiency and long-term stability without any deactivation in ethylene-rich feed (2 vol % of acetylene, 40 vol % of ethylene, 10 vol % of H2 in Ar), and therefore, the system shows promise for industrial application.
