Shape Engineering of Metal-Organic Frameworks via MOF@Polymer Composite Fabrication

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a fascinating class of porous materials that have become the subject of research owing to their unique characteristics such as high surface areas, low densities, and structural tunability. Recently, the research has been directed towards large-scale synthesis of MOFs and their industrial applications. In terms of synthesis, MOFs are conventionally isolated as crystalline powders that are not industrially favorable due to their limitations in processing. Shaping MOFs into different forms while preserving or improving their properties offers several advantages as they can be easily processed, handled, and stored. Controlling the shape of MOFs in a systematic way can represent a major step forward to bringing them to the market, testing them at industrial scales and realizing their true potential. In this thesis, a new shaping method in the form of MOF@polymer composite beads (M@PB) is presented in which the MOF crystals are dispersed in a porous matrix of polymeric beads. This shaping method, based on phase inversion technique, not only preserves the intrinsic properties of the MOF crystals such as crystallinity and porosity, but also improves their performance for targeted applications. Due to the versatility and flexibility of this method virtually any MOF can be incorporated into any polymer structure. In addition, the method allows for pre- and post-synthetic modification of both the MOF and polymer phases, hence, making the composite material of superior tunability toward targeted applications. Such tunable properties have been illustrated in the context of this thesis for liquid-phase separation and photocatalysis applications. HKUST-1 was used with three different polymers to form M@PB that improve I2 capture and recovery in liquid phase, a process used for recovery of precious metals from waste of electrical and electronic equipment. M@PBs have shown superior mechanical and chemical robustness for advanced adsorption systems that paves the way for their industrial applications. UiO-66, was functionalized with double amino groups and was incorporated into M@PB using polyethersulfone (PES) that was chemically modified with carboxylic acid groups to capture toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater and reduce it to its non-toxic trivalent form (Cr(III)). The Cr(VI) capture and subsequent photoreduction was carried out, for the first time, in a single integrated adsorption-photoreduction system equipped with a visible light source, demonstrating that the Cr(VI) concentration is brought below drinkable levels and the Cr(VI) subsequently photoreduced to Cr(III) species using light irradiation during adsorbent regeneration. This illustrates the tunability of M@PBs through careful design of the MOF and polymer toward a targeted application.

Photoluminescent, upconversion luminescent and nonlinear optical metal-organic frameworks: From fundamental photophysics to potential applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials prepared by the self-assembly of metal ions or clusters with organic ligands. The unique characteristics of MOFs, including structural tunability, high surface areas, low densities and tailored pore surface functionalization, have made them leading contenders as high-performance porous materials, alongside the established zeolites and activated carbons. Consequently, the permanent porosity of MOFs has been extensively exploited for gas capture and separation and catalysis. In recent years, the field has been expanded towards new applications and many studies of MOFs are venturing into unexplored avenues. A large number of studies have been focused on photoluminescent, upconversion luminescent, and nonlinear optical MOFs for applications in areas such as white-light emission, bioimaging, sensing, and photocatalysis. Within the first half of this tutorial review, we present the fundamental principles of luminescence, including detailed scientific discussions on the luminescence origin of different materials such as organic dyes, transition metal complexes, quantum dots, and lanthanide compounds. Principles and important parameters for the applications of luminescent MOFs are introduced, followed by a summary of recent interesting publications for each application. In the second half, we introduce nonlinear optical effects including second harmonic generation and two-photon absorption, and upconversion of luminescence, followed by detailed examples of MOFs that exhibit these phenomena. Novel structured adsorber and oxidation catalysts for the removal of VOCs in low concentration

One possibility for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is catalytic oxidation. For the removal of VOCs in low concentration (≲ 3000 ppmv for propane) it is not possible to sustain the required oxidation temperature over the catalyst without external heating. An approach to overcome this problem is to concentrate the VOC by adsorption, in a "two-step adsorption-incineration" process. This is an unsteady state process in which the VOC laden effluent gas is cleaned by passing it through an adsorber. Once the adsorber is saturated the VOC is desorbed by heating and purging. The concentrated VOC from the desorber can then be oxidized over the catalyst, producing enough heat to sustain the oxidation temperature. Conventional adsorbents have some drawbacks such as tailing during desorption due to the large particle size, high pressure drop and hot-spot formation. The objective of this work was to develop, characterize and test the adsorbent and catalyst, with low resistance to mass transfer resulting from thin films of active material, for the two-step adsorption-incineration process. Both the adsorbent and the oxidation catalysts were supported on sintered metal fibers (SMF). This is a novel, structured support offering several advantages over conventional randomly packed beds: Low pressure drop, due to the high porosity of the SMF, which is important where large flow rates and/or high quantities of gas must be treated. High thermal conductivity, due to the metallic nature, leading to smaller temperature gradients in the fixed-bed. A very high geometric surface area, due to the small fiber size. On the order of 200,000 m2/m3 with a fiber diameter of 20 µm. Furthermore, a mathematical model was developed to show the feasibility of the coupling of the two steps in the process. The adsorber was made from a thin, homogeneous film of MFI-type zeolite covering the fibers of the SMF. The film was grown by the seed-film method by hydrothermal treatment. A 3 µm film was obtained with 10 wt.% zeolite on the fiber after 24 h synthesis at 125 °C. This material had a specific surface area of 30 m2/g. The adsorption equilibrium of propane was described well by the Langmuir isotherm and the heat of adsorption was found to be ΔH0ads = - 43.1 kJ/mol. Isothermal breakthrough curves were measured as a function of temperature and film thickness. A mathematical model, comprised of a tanks-in-series model with a linear driving force (LDF) mass transfer description, successfully described the breakthrough behavior. The overall mass transfer was found to be solely due to diffusion in the zeolite film. However, the thin films show very low resistance to mass transfer leading to low internal concentration gradients and efficient utilization of the adsorbent. The pressure drop was measured and compared to that of a randomly packed fixed-bed of spheres. The equivalent diameter for a constant volumetric flow rate and superficial cross sectional area was dp = 180 µm, for a fiber diameter of df = 26 µm at 10 wt.% zeolite loading. The oxidation catalysts were all supported on SMF and cobalt oxide was used as the active phase. Three different groups of catalysts were developed. The support was modified by coating the fibers either with a thin film of fine powder (alumina or catalyst powder) or with a MFI-type zeolite film identical to the adsorbent. The third group was made from cobalt oxide impregnated directly on the oxidized fibers. The latter type of catalyst was found to be the most active during the screening experiments. The base support composition was varied (stainless steel (SS), FeCrAlloy and inconel) to investigate the support effect on the kinetics. The stainless steel and FeCrAlloy supports had similar activities, surpassing that of the inconel supported catalyst, which might be attributed to a Co3O4 surface enriched with iron from the support. Between the 1.1 wt.%Co3O4/SMFSS and 1.5 wt.%Co3O4/SMFFeCrAlloy catalyst the FeCrAlloy based had the highest normalized activity at low temperature (< 310 °C), low propane mole fraction (0.13 %) and high oxygen mole fraction (16.7 %). The chemical kinetics were determined from a novel and efficient experimental design. The apparent activation energy for this catalyst was found to be 87.5 ± 2.6 kJ/mol, with reaction orders in propane of 0.38 ± 0.04 and in oxygen of 0.30 ± 0.08. The catalysts were tested up to 350 °C. Mass transfer limitations were absent and the kinetics was described well with the power rate law as compared to the Mars-van Krevelen model. Catalysts based on Co3O4, supported directly on oxidized SMF, are very active catalysts, simple to prepare, withstand deactivation due to hot-spot formation and show great potential in comparison to the industrial reference catalyst (copper and manganese oxide supported on alumina). The adiabatic desorption process was investigated by mathematical modeling. Simply purging the adsorption bed with the hot exhaust gas from the reactor cannot result in the concentration of the VOC due to the high heat capacity of the fixed-bed. Hence, it will be necessary to use either a high heat carrier like steam, with the adverse effects of drying and separation of water and VOC, or an approach in which the desorber is heated prior to purging the bed, changing the adsorption equilibrium in favor of high gas concentrations. For the latter method, the minimum theoretical propane mole fraction for an autothermal process was found to be 350 ppmv to sustain a catalytic incinerator at 250 °C. Finally, it can be concluded that for the first time zeolite films on SMF were used as structured adsorbents, leading to very low internal mass transfer and increased process efficiency. Furthermore, the advantages of the SMF can be exploited in a catalytic oxidizer, which can be combined with the adsorber to annihilate VOCs in low concentrations. A novel method for the deposition of fine powder catalyst on SMF was also developed for the first time.

Structure et mécanismes de microdéformation de polymethylmethacrylates renforcés au choc

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is used in many applications requiring good optical properties, resistance to ageing and resistance to UV irradiation, in spite of its relatively poor mechanical response to impact loading. In order to extend the range of application of this transparent but fragile material, and improve its competitiveness with engineering polymers such as polycarbonate, it is necessary to improve its fracture resistance. Several generations of toughened PMMA reinforced by addition of rubber particles have therefore been developed by Arkema over the last decade ("rubber toughened PMMA" (RTPMMA)). However, there remains a need for substantial improvement even in these relatively fracture resistant materials, providing the overall motivation for this project. The first type of material considered is based on RTPMMA in which the matrix ductility has been improved by copolymerization with up to 25 % ethyl acrylate (EA). The reinforcing particles used in these new modified RTPMMA grades comprise a PMMA core, either one (conventional 3L particles), or two rubbery layers (experimental 4L particles), and finally an outer grafted PMMA shell. A second, entirely new type of rubber modified PMMA, based on Poly(MMABA-MMA) copolymers (MAM) prepared by controlled radical polymerization (PRC) is then considered. PRC is carried out using nitroxide initiators, making it possible to polymerize the blocks of PMMA from the blocks of PBA in a continuous mass process. Although little was known about their mechanical response prior to the present work, the MAM copolymers represent an attractive alternative to RTPMMA from an economic point of view since their production involves essentially only one step. The scientific aim of this study is to understand the relationship between the mechanical properties, the crack propagation mechanisms and the microstructure of these various impact reinforced PMMA materials, and, if possible, to use this knowledge to identify strategies for improving their performance. It is first shown that there is an increase in the strain to break from 10 % to up to 30 % on addition of 25 % EA to the PMMA matrix, and a corresponding reduction in the yield stress from 95 to 60 MPa. The TEM observations of thin films deformed in-situ show these changes to be associated with a change in microdeformation mechanism from crazing in the pure PMMA to homogeneous plastic deformation. However, they are not accompanied by any substantial improvement in the high speed fracture resistance, the value of the maximum stress intensity factor, KImax, at 1 m/s remaining at about 2 MPa.m1/2 in all the matrices investigated. The ductility improves significantly on addition of the 3L and 4L particles, and this improvement is particularly marked with the 4L particles, the strain to break reaching 80 % and the yield stress dropping to about 40 MPa, regardless of the matrix EA content. The fracture resistance also increases over the full range of speeds investigated, and optimum performance is obtained in the matrix containing 25 % EA combined with 4L particles, KImax ranging from 3.2 MPa.m1/2 at 10-4 m/s to 3.5 MPa.m1/2 at 1 m/s. At low speeds, both the 3L and 4L particles deform by cavitation of the rubbery layer and, as the EA content is raised, the matrix microdeformation mechanism at the crack tip changes from crazing to simple shear, consistent with the observations for the matrix. Nevertheless, at very high speeds, at which crazing dominates in all the materials, the rubbery phase of the particles is argued to become relatively rigid and hence increasingly ineffective in decreasing the crack propagation energy. Thus, the overall improvements in mechanical behaviour obtained on EA addition are not reflected by an improvement in the notched Charpy impact toughness, which does not exceed 5.5 kJ/m2 in any of the RTPMMA. There may be scope for further optimizing the particle size at high EA contents owing to an observed decrease in entanglement molar mass, as demonstrated in previous work by Béguelin et al., but this is not thought to be viable from an economic point of view. MAM copolymers provide an alternative, low cost means of introducing a rubbery phase with controlled dimensions and morphology into a PMMA matrix. These MAM copolymers show similar ductility in tension to the RTPMMA (strain to break around 70 %) and an even lower yield stress (around 25 MPa depending on the grade). MAM is found to show a lamellar morphology for PMMA contents, ∫PMMA < 75%, and deformation of this morphology results in extension of the PBA phase and formation of chevron-like regions of shear deformation. Even so, the fracture resistance remains relatively low in the first generation of these materials, KImax not exceeding 2 MPa.m1/2 at 1 m/s, and Charpy impact tests on notched samples showing relatively little improvement between MAM and the PMMA homopolymer (notched Charpy impact toughness of up to 2.25 kJ/m2 compared with 1 kJ/m2 for PMMA and 5.5 kJ/m2 for RTPMMA). The morphological observations and mechanical test results for MAM nevertheless point to the important role of the molar mass and ∫PMMA, and also to the interest of stripping, i.e. removal of residual BA monomer prior to polymerization of the MMA block. It has hence been possible to design and produce a second generation of stripped MAM copolymers with higher molar masses (Mn > 100 kg/mol) and an optimum ∫PMMA (< 65 %). These are found not only to show ductile behaviour in tension and excellent optical properties, but also notched Charpy impact toughnesses approaching 6 kJ/m2. Although this is still significantly less than for polycarbonate (12 kJ/m2), it demonstrates the promise of MAM for expanding the range of applications of MMA-based systems beyond that currently accessible to conventional RTPMMA.
