Beam transfer function measurements used to probe the transverse Landau damping at the LHC

The Landau damping mechanism stabilizes the impedance driven head-tail modes in hadron synchrotrons. Because of the frequent coherent beam instabilities observed in the Large Hadron Collider in 2012, the Landau damping of the beams was doubted. Therefore, a transverse beam transfer function (BTF) system was installed in order to probe the transverse Landau damping of the beams and compare the measurements with expectations. The results of the BTF measurements acquired during several experiments in the LHC are summarized including different machine configurations. The method developed for the data analysis is described, and the comparison between the models and the measurements is also presented.

Beam Transfer Function measurements and transverse beam stability studies for the Large Hadron Collider and its High Luminosity upgrade

The motion of high energetic particle beams in accelerators is influenced by their interactions with the accelerator environment through electromagnetic fields induced by the particle passages. Traveling with a speed close to the speed of light, the particles induce image charge and currents in the surroundings generating wake-fields that act back on the beams. Destabilizing effects may arise from the coupled motion between the circulating particles and the induced wake fields compromising the accelerator performances. The stability of the beams is ensured by the Landau damping of coherent motions generated by the diversity of oscillation frequencies of the particles in the beams. Under the effect of non linear forces produced by machine non linearities or beam-beam interactions the particles oscillate with slightly different frequencies depending on their amplitudes in the beams (tune spread). At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) transverse instability thresholds are evaluated via the computation of the dispersion integral that depends on the tune spread in the beams as well as on the particle distribution. A large tune spread is beneficial for the Landau damping as long as no diffusive mechanism is present. In the presence of diffusive mechanisms, caused by resonance excitations or noise, the stability diagram can be deformed due to the modification of the particle distribution inside the beam leading to a possible lack of Landau damping of the impedance coherent modes previously damped by lying within the unperturbed stability area. This work aims to experimentally explore the transverse stability of the beams by means of Beam Transfer Function measurements at the LHC. They provide direct measurements of the stability diagrams and are sensitive to particle distribution changes. First measurements of the Landau stability diagrams at the LHC are presented and compared to model expectations. Experimental studies have been carried out in the presence of different sources of non linear effects such as octupole magnets and beam-beam interactions and compared to the model expectations. Limitations deriving from transverse coherent instabilities in the LHC are analysed and possible explanations for the observed LHC instabilities are discussed. In the perspective of the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade (HL-LHC), transverse stability studies for different beam-beam interactions and machine configurations are presented together with possible solutions to compensate reductions of the Landau damping during the operational phases of the HL-LHC.

Electron cloud studies for the LHC and future proton colliders

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and most powerful particle collider. Its main objectives are to explore the validity of the standard model of particle physics and to look for new physics beyond it, at unprecedented collision energies and rates. A good luminosity performance is imperative to attain these goals. In the last stage of the LHC commissioning (2011-2012), the limiting factor to achieving the design bunch spacing of 25 ns has been the electron cloud effects. The electron cloud is also expected to be the most important luminosity limitation after the first Long Shut-Down of the LHC (LS1), when the machine should be operated at higher energy and with 25-ns spacing, as well as for the planned luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC) and future high energy proton colliders (HE-LHC and VHE-LHC). This thesis contributes to the understanding of the electron cloud observations during the first run of the LHC (2010-2012), presents the first beam dynamics analysis for the next generation of high energy hadron colliders, and assists in the prediction of how electron clouds will impact the performance of the future high-luminosity and high-energy machines. In particular, the thesis discusses a method to benchmark pressure measurements at the LHC against electron cloud build-up simulations for identifying the most relevant surface parameters. This method allowed monitoring the effectiveness of LHC “scrubbing runs”, revealing that in the warm regions, the maximum Secondary Electron Yield, δmax, decreased from an initial value of about 1.9 down to about 1.2 (with a low-energy electron reflectivity R ≈ 0.3), thanks to surface conditioning. In addition, the “map formalism”, a good approximation to quickly explain and predict electron cloud effects, has been further developed and applied, for the first time, to optimize the scrubbing process at the LHC. For the HL-LHC, several novel filling schemes have been analyzed in terms of luminosity performance and electron cloud activity. Only a few of them are compatible with an electron cloud activity lower than for the baseline scenario. We highlight a promising option which could be a good fallback scenario in case the electron cloud effects prevent the injection of the baseline beam. This option could also be considered for the nominal LHC after the LS1 if electron cloud turns out to be a serious obstacle. Regarding the future high-energy proton colliders (HE- and VHE-LHC), in the frame of this thesis a performance model was developed to predict the luminosity as a function of time and to optimize the beam parameters, carrying out the first ever performance analysis for these machines. Several scenarios have been considered, including round and flat beams as well as different bunch spacings. The parameters presented in this thesis have been submitted as an input for the most recent update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics. Finally, we also report the electron cloud studies performed for both high energy machines. The large amount of primary photoelectrons generated by synchrotron radiation at these high energies motivates the consideration of high efficiency photon stops as well as other mitigation techniques (e.g. a-C coatings and clearing electrodes). Although for both machines (HE- and VHE-LHC) a tentative bunch spacing of 25 ns has been considered as baseline assumption, the results of this thesis suggest the possibility of going down to 5 ns, since such a beam would present several advantages.

Analysis of transverse beam stabilization with radio frequency quadrupoles

A radio frequency (rf) quadrupole has been considered as a potential alternative device for Landau damping in circular hadron colliders. The objective of this study is to benchmark and confirm its stabilizing effect predicted by stability diagram theory by means of numerical tracking simulations. To that end, two complementary models of the device are implemented in PyHEADTAIL, a 6D macroparticle tracking code designed to study the formation and mitigation of collective instabilities. The rf quadrupole model is applied to a slow head-tail instability observed experimentally in the Large Hadron Collider to show that such a device can in principle provide beam stability similarly to magnetic octupoles. Thereafter, alternative usage schemes of rf quadrupoles also in combination with magnetic octupoles are proposed, discussed, and benchmarked with simulations.
