Air mediates the impact of a compliant hemisphere on a rigid smooth surface

Fleeting contact between solids immersed in a fluid medium governs the response of critically important materials, from coffee to soil. Rapid impact of soft solids occurs in systems as diverse as car tires, soft robotic locomotion and suspensions, including soil and coffee. In each of these systems, the dynamics are fundamentally altered by the presence of a fluid layer mediating solid contact. However, observing this class of interactions directly is challenging, as the relevant time and length scales are extremely small. Here we directly image the interface between a soft elastic hemisphere and a flat rigid substrate during rapid impact over a wide range of impact velocities V at high temporal and spatial resolution using the Virtual Frame Technique (VFT). In each experiment, a pocket of air is trapped in a dimple between the impactor and the substrate, preventing direct solid-solid contact at the apex of the hemisphere. Thus, unlike the quasi-static Hertzian solution where contact forms in an ellipse, in each rapid air-mediated impact, contact forms in an annular region which rapidly grows both inward toward the impact axis, and rapidly outward away from the impact axis. We find that the radius of initial contact varies non-monotonically with V, indicating a transition between elastically dominated dynamics to inertially dominated dynamics. Furthermore, we find that for slower impact speeds, where the outer contact front cannot outpace the Rayleigh velocity, contact expands in a patchy manner, indicating an elasto-lubricative instability. These behaviors, observed using the VFT, occur in regimes relevant to a wide variety of soft systems, and might modulate frictional properties during contact. The size of the air pocket varies with V and impactor stiffness. Our measurements reveal an unanticipated, sudden transition of the air pocket's size as V increases beyond 1 m s(-1) and multiple modes of air entrainment at the advancing solid-solid contact front that depend on the front's velocity.

Realization and study of InAs/GaAs quantum dot superluminescent diodes emitting at 1.3µm

A quantum dot is a semiconductor nanostructure that confines the motion of conduction band electrons and valence band holes in all three spatial directions, thus creating fully discrete energy levels. The confinement in the InAs/GaAs material system is generated by the bandgap difference for the two materials (∼ 0.4 eV for InAs, and ∼ 1.4 eV for GaAs) which provides a minimum of potential energy for both electrons and holes inside the InAs nanoparticle. The appearance of new nanoscale effects modifies the electro-optical properties of such a system which makes possible the improvement of existing device performance or even fascinating novel device applications. For the creation of coherent structures with very high purity and high density, as it is required for application in light emitting devices, self-assembling is a very important pathway. The quantum dot creation mostly relies on the relaxation of the strain accumulated during the growth of lattice mismatched materials, which happens in a non-equlibrium condition. This results in a statistical distribution of all the parameters characterizing the InAs nanocrystals as size, composition and strain, whose direct manifestation is the inhomogeneously broadened light emission deriving from quantum dot ensembles. At the dawning of the quantum dot development the broadening was considered as a limiting factor for application in semiconductor lasers. Today, it is considered favorably for all the applications where a broad gain spectrum is required as optical amplifiers, monolithic and external-cavity tunable lasers, and superluminescent diodes. The objective of this thesis is the application of InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots to the active region of high power and broad-band superluminescent diodes emitting in the 1.3 μm wavelength region. Superluminescent diodes are edge-emitting semiconductor light sources based on the amplification of spontaneous emission along a waveguide where optical gain is achieved through current injection. They combine the high power and brightness of laser diodes with the low coherence of LEDs. The latter is a fundamental feature for the application in optical coherence tomography medical imaging, where the image resolution is related to the spectral bandwidth of the light source used. The achievement of bandwidths larger than 100 nm are demonstrated in this work through the optimization of molecular beam epitaxy growth conditions. This may be done optimizing the statistical size-dispersion of the dot ensemble, or through the use of different dot layers emitting at slightly different wavelengths. The large bandwidth emission is obtained also due to the peculiar energy structure of this material, for which a multi-state emission appears under particular injection conditions. As a term of comparison, best commercial single-chip superluminescent diodes for the imaging application at 1.3 μm show bandwidths around 60 nm. Moreover, the discrete nature of the energy levels in InAs quantum dots together with the implementation of a GaAs-based technology can be beneficial for the device temperature stability (the competing technology, based on InP, suffers from strong thermal degradation). The analysis and understanding of the device temperature characteristics will be detailed in the last chapter of the manuscript. Even though standard devices show an important temperature dependence, a better stability may be achieved through the use of p-doped active regions. In the last few years quantum dot devices have shown outstanding properties if compared to the competing quantum well technology. Low threshold currents, high temperature stability and low chirp in lasers, large bandwidths and low gain saturation in amplifiers have been demonstrated. However, in spite of the large interest among the scientific community, many of the microscopic processes at the origin of the electro-optical characteristics of this material are not completely understood yet. The physics of the quantum dot active material, will be modeled in this work through the use of systems of rate equations with different complexity depending on the system they are applied to. We will provide a mean-field rate equation model allowing to get insights about carrier dynamics in QD lasers. Also, we will develop two different traveling-wave rate equation models, one for the modeling of the L-I characteristics and the other for the modeling of the spectral characteristics of quantum dot superluminescent diodes. Considering the carrier and photon density distributions across the device cavity is essential in superluminescent diodes, where the high single pass gain results in large non-homogeneities of photon and carrier distributions. The work is motivated by an industrial cooperation with EXALOS AG, a leading company in the development, manufacturing, and sales of broadband superluminescent diodes.

Angular Resolved low loss EELS for Materials Characterization

Electron Energy Loss Spectrometry (EELS) in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is a powerful tool for the investigation of the electronic structure of materials. In the low loss regime, one can access the optical properties which are governed by the dielectric function ε(ω), which may be retrieved thanks to the so-called "loss function". The energy range covered by EELS goes from the infrared (less than 1 eV) to the hard X-rays (about 3 keV), each region having its own interest. The low loss region (0–100 eV) serves to investigate the valence electron structure and the inter-band transition behavior. Using angular resolved EELS gives further information about the dispersion behavior of the investigated material. This work is a part of a large project aiming a closer agreement between theory and experiment in angular resolved EELS by improving the state of the art in both fields. The purpose of this work is to set up a reliable experimental technique to retrieve the momentum transfer resolved single scattering distribution at very low energy with good accuracy and resolutions. One of the main challenges was to use the newly installed JEOL 2200 FS transmission electron microscope that is equipped with an in-column Ω filter for retrieval of the loss function in diffraction energy filtered TEM. Issues such as the angular resolution, contamination, image-coupling in diffraction mode and plural scattering have been solved. Several optical alignments and operational modes of the JEOL 2200 FS have been tested, and finally nano-beam diffraction was found to be the optimal running mode. This work provides for the first time a full 3D energy loss data cube in diffraction mode with energy and angular resolutions of 1 eV and 0.5 nm−1 respectively. After processing, the energy and angular relevant data span an energy loss range from 2.75 eV to 40.25 eV and the angular momentum transfer up to 12.5 nm−1. Although theoretically, without CCD camera binning and the maximum available camera length of the JEOL (250 cm), a momentum transfer resolution of 0.04 nm−1 would have been possible, the effective angular resolution was limited by the smallest obtainable beam convergence as well as by the remaining aberrations of the microscope. The presented technique can be reproduced on any transmission electron microscope equipped with an in-column energy filter. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the proposed method provides working ranges in energy, spatial and angular resolutions limited only by the perfor- mance of the microscope. Previous techniques did not provide experimental results showing an energy resolution independent of the spatial and angular resolutions.

Control of pulsed light propagation through multimode optical fibers

Visualization of organs and cells in the interior of living beings is a challenging task due to the light absorption and multiple light scattering occurring in biological tissue that prevents the di-rect transmission of images. A standard visualization approach is based on the use of endo-scopes which is accomplished through apertures in the body. Since their invention, the light transmission capability of optical fibers has enabled fiber optic based endoscopy with devices based on bundles of optical fibers that can directly relay images. Due to their small diameter, fiber optic endoscopes are standard in minimally invasive applications either with a white light illumination or as a fluorescent imaging device. The principle behind fluorescent endoscopy consists on the scanning of light intensity over a fluorescent sample, which is achieved by se-quential illumination of each one of the fiber bundles or by mechanical scanning of a single-mode double-cladding fiber. Collecting the fluorescent signal through the light guiding medium, an image can be reconstructed. The main drawback of fiber bundle endoscopes is the pixelated limited resolution given by the presence of thousands of cores that conform the bundle. In the double cladding fiber endoscopes, there is a limit to the miniaturization of the endoscope due to the requirement of mechanical elements at the tip of the fiber to scan the illumination over the sample. In this thesis, methods for focusing and digital scanning of optical light pulses through multimode optical fibers without any distal mechanical element are developed. Such techniques are based on spatial light modulation. Spatial phase modulation allows the control of light propagation in scrambling media, as in a multimode fiber, enabling the generation of intensity light foci or arbitrary intensity profiles. The high intensity of the transmitted pulses permits multi-photon imaging through multimode optical fibers, resulting in imaging probes of higher resolution than in the case of fiber bundles. We demonstrate in a working prototype that this approach provides all the advantages of multi-photon microscopy at the tip of an ultra-thin probe, such as a reduced photo bleaching of the sample, optical sectioning and enhanced image contrast. The developed methods can also be employed for material processing that requires high in-tensity light pulses. In specific, we demonstrate additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, at the tip of an ultra-thin needle. The working principle is based on two-photon polymerization, which is accomplished by scanning intense light pulses on a photosensitive material that hardens when exposed to light. All other additive manufacturing methods require very large nozzles or components in close proximity to the structure that they build, up to now. With an ultra-thin 3D printing probe we enable micro-fabrication through very small apertures, in places of difficult access or in the interior of living beings. We call it, endofabrication.
