Reliability analysis of welded stud shear connectors on simply-supported bridge girders

This paper examines the reliability of welded stud shear connectors for steel-concrete composite bridge girders. A finite element model of a simply-supported bridge was created featuring link connector elements representing the shear studs between beam and shell elements, representing a steel girder and concrete deck, respectively. The model is programmed using a program interface to build a model including studs with random strengths. Using this approach, many analyses can be run in succession, with connectors failing between each analysis. This study considers the probabilistic characteristics of the welded studs and truck loading and recognizes the interaction between ultimate limit state and fatigue limit state. The example bridge employed in this study was designed according to the CSA S6-2014 code provisions. Based on the presented reliability analysis, an increase in the CSA S6-2014 24 MPa endurance limit of at least 1.45 times is found to be acceptable.

Through-thickness performance of adhesive connections between FRP bridge decks and steel main girders

FRP bridge decks offer several advantages compared with conventional concrete bridge decks, particularly their much lower weight, but also their resistance against corrosion as well as easier installation and maintenance. The poorly conceived methods available for connecting FRP bridge decks with their supporting structures – normally steel girders – nonetheless constitute a disadvantage. Connections involving studs or bolts are not appropriate in this case, since FRP is a very brittle material that offers no ductile properties. Bolted connections usually result in much higher stress concentrations, while adhesive bonding is a more material-adapted connection method since larger surfaces can be linked together, thus ensuring reduced stresses. The bridge system investigated in this thesis consists of a pultruded FRP bridge deck bonded to steel main girders, the bridge's main structural components, which have to transmit the dead and traffic loads to the supports, whereas the bridge deck is spanned in the transverse direction perpendicular to the steel girders. Uplift forces caused by the load-bearing behavior of the bridge deck transverse to the bridge axis lead to through-thickness tensile stresses in the adhesive joint. The main objective of this thesis is the description of the structural behavior in the transverse direction. This includes analysis of the stresses in the adhesive connection as well as determination of the strength of the joints. Analytical and experimental investigations were carried out. It was shown, that the tensile stress distribution in the adhesive joint is non-uniform with high stress concentrations below the FRP deck webs of the cellular deck and above the steel girder web. Alternately inclined deck webs thereby induce significantly higher stresses below the vertical webs. A method for the calculation of the stress state in the adhesive layer is proposed which is validated by numerical and experimental results. The material strength of the connection in terms of a combination of tensile through-thickness and shear stresses is established. The total safety factor of the joint was higher than the safety factor of the FRP deck for bending between the main girders. A possible failure process would not start in the adhesive connection between bridge deck and steel girder which eventually could lead to additional failure of other structural members. The system is redundant. Fatigue loading up to 10 million cycles showed no stiffness degradation. The results of this thesis prove the existence of a good load-bearing behavior under static and fatigue loads of adhesively-bonded joints between pultruded FRP bridge decks and structural steel girders, where the adhesive connection is loaded with uplift forces and moments acting in the bridge deck, in addition to the shear in the connection layer due to composite action. The basis for a design method for adhesively-bonded connections between pultruded FRP bridge decks and steel girders is provided.

A probabilistic model for determining the effect of post-weld treatment on the fatigue performance of tubular bridge joints

Herein, a probabilistic model for predicting the effect of post-weld treatment on the fatigue performance of the welded joints in tubular truss bridges is described. Specifically, a probabilistic LEFM-based model is first developed for the fatigue analysis of single untreated and treated crack sites in tubular K-joints. A systems reliability approach is then proposed for the analysis of tubular structures with multiple potential crack sites. Using this approach, it is then demonstrated that significant improvements in the fatigue reliability of tubular joints with dimensions common to bridge structures can be obtained with post-weld treatment, even when the influences of the various untreated and treated potential crack sites are considered.

Connections by Adhesion, Interlocking and Friction for Steel-Concrete Composite Bridges under Static and Cyclic Loading

Steel-concrete composite bridges with twin-I steel girders and prefabricated slabs constitute an economical and competitive solution for small and medium bridge spans. In recent years they have started to gain their share in the construction market. However, the current slab-to-girder connection with groups of headed shear stud connectors is not well adapted for prefabrication and fast erection, and does not respond successfully to the durability of the construction. New types of connections by adhesion, interlocking and friction constitute a conception that aims to answer these demands. The resistance of these connections is based on the development of longitudinal shear stresses in the interfaces which form the connection. The goals of this study are to complete the existing research in this field by proposing scientific tools in order to predict the connection's structural performance, i.e. prediction of the connection's ultimate resistance and deformation capacity, including the post-failure behaviour. In addition, the behaviour of the connection under cyclic loading is also investigated to assess the connection's resistance to fatigue and to propose a design method for composite bridges under fatigue loading. To fulfill theses goals a combinational methodology was applied which included: study of the state of the art: a) in composite bridges so as to define the requirements and b) in interface behaviour in order to emphasize the parameters which are responsible for the resistance and obtain information for the nature of cyclic loading damage mechanisms, experimental investigations: a) to reveal the laws describing the interfaces and the connection's behaviour for static and cyclic loading, and provide data for development of analytical expressions and model validation and b) demonstrate the capacity of a composite beam under cyclic loading and the extent of its remaining resistance at ultimate limit state, analytical studies: a) to produce the laws describing the interface behaviour under static and cyclic loading and b) to evaluate the impact of the cyclic loading to the slip in the interfaces and in the connection and thus propose a damage factor for cyclic loading, finite element analysis in order to enable an analytical description of the confinement effect, caused by the reinforced concrete slab, which contributes to the resistance, the development of a numerical model to predict the connection's structural performance and to propose a design method for composite bridges fabricated with the new connection. Application of the mentioned methodology resulted in several useful conclusions: The interface behaviour can be described by analytical laws. The post failure behaviour of the interfaces was explained by accounting for the kinematics of the failed surface and basic notions of fracture mechanics. The damage due to cyclic loading on the interfaces and on the connection is expressed by the accumulation of a residual slip. Provided that the shear stresses remain lower than an elastic limit and the accumulated slip does not exceed the failure slip for static loading, fatigue failure is avoided. The confinement effect was incorporated, analytically, together with the laws of the interface behaviour in a numerical model to predict the connection's structural performance and allow a parametrical study. A design method for the verification of composite beams under static and cyclic loading was developed.
