Intermediate phase engineering of halide perovskites for photovoltaics

Metal halide perovskites serving as one of the most promising photovoltaic materials are gaining considerable attention worldwide. For achieving high performance as well as long-term stability of the perovskite solar cells (PSCs), a good quality of perovskite film featuring in smooth, pinhole-free morphology, full coverage over substrates, good heterojunction contacts, and stable photoactive phase is of great importance. During solution fabrication for perovskite films, intermediate phase, which refers to the state of precursor composition before final annealing, plays an essential role in determining the film quality, especially in the state-of-theart PSCs. In this review, we summarize the research involving mechanism and applications of intermediate phase engineering (IPE) processes in various solution-processing technologies. The challenges of IPE are further discussed, and perspectives are provided for developing high-performance PSCs via IPE.

An Efficient Approach to Fabricate Air-Stable Perovskite Solar Cells via Addition of a Self-Polymerizing Ionic Liquid

Despite the excellent photovoltaic properties achieved by perovskite solar cells at the laboratory scale, hybrid perovskites decompose in the presence of air, especially at high temperatures and in humid environments. Consequently, high-efficiency perovskites are usually prepared in dry/inert environments, which are expensive and less convenient for scale-up purposes. Here, a new approach based on the inclusion of an in situ polymerizable ionic liquid, 1,3-bis(4-vinylbenzyl)imidazolium chloride ([bvbim]Cl), is presented, which allows perovskite films to be manufactured under humid environments, additionally leading to a material with improved quality and long-term stability. The approach, which is transferrable to several perovskite formulations, allows efficiencies as high as 17% for MAPbI(3)processed in air % relative humidity (RH) >= 30 (from an initial 15%), and 19.92% for FAMAPbI(3)fabricated in %RH >= 50 (from an initial 17%), providing one of the best performances to date under similar conditions.

Insights about the Absence of Rb Cation from the 3D Perovskite Lattice: Effect on the Structural, Morphological, and Photophysical Properties and Photovoltaic Performance

Efficiencies >20% are obtained from the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) employing Cs+ and Rb+ based perovskite compositions; therefore, it is important to understand the effect of these inorganic cations specifically Rb+ on the properties of perovskite structures. Here the influence of Cs+ and Rb+ is elucidated on the structural, morphological, and photophysical properties of perovskite structures and the photovoltaic performances of resulting PSCs. Structural, photoluminescence (PL), and external quantum efficiency studies establish the incorporation of Cs+ (x < 10%) but amply rule out the possibility of Rb-incorporation into the MAPbI(3) (MA = CH3NH3+) lattice. Moreover, morphological studies and time-resolved PL show that both Cs+ and Rb+ detrimentally affect the surface coverage of MAPbI(3) layers and charge-carrier dynamics, respectively, by influencing nucleation density and by inducing nonradiative recombination. In addition, differential scanning calorimetry shows that the transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal phase occurring around 160 K requires more thermal energy for the Cs-containing MAPbI(3) systems compared to the pristine MAPbI(3). Investigation including mixed halide (I/Br) and mixed cation A-cation based compositions further confirms the absence of Rb+ from the 3D-perovskite lattice. The fundamental insights gained through this work will be of great significance to further understand highly promising perovskite compositions.

Highly Efficient and Stable 2D Dion Jacobson/3D Perovskite Heterojunction Solar Cells

Heterostructures involving two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) perovskites have recently attracted increased attention due to their ability to combine the high photovoltaic performance of 3D perovskites with the increased stability of 2D perovskites. Here we report ammonium thiocyanate (NH4SCN) passivated 3D methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite active layer and deposition of 2D perovskite capping layer using xylylene diammonium iodide (XDAI) organic cation. The 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction formation is probed by using FESEM and UPS spectroscopy. The NH4SCN passivated MAPbI(3) perovskite has shown 19.6% PCE compared to the 17.18% PCE of pristine MAPbI(3) perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Finally, the champion 2D/3D perovskite heterojunction based solar cells have achieved the remarkable PCE of 20.74%. The increased PCE in 2D/3D PSCs is mainly attributed to the reduced defect density and suppressed nonradiative recombination losses. Moreover, the hydrophobic 2D capping layer endows the 2D/3D heterojunction perovskites with exceptional moisture, thermal and UV stability, highlighting the promise of highly stable and efficient 2D/3D PSCs.
