La ligne éditoriale du Monde diplomatique est associée à l'altermondialisme et à la critique du libéralisme économique, publiant « autant de journalistes que d’universitaires, d’écrivains et de chercheurs ». À ses débuts il est destiné aux « cercles diplomatiques et aux grandes organisations internationales », créé sur l’initiative de François Honti, journaliste et ancien consul de Hongrie à Genève dans l'immédiat après-guerre.

En 1917, il est recruté par Cai Yuanpei pour enseigner au département de philosophie de l'université de Pékin.
