Collimation simulations for the FCC-ee

The collimation system of the Future Circular Collider, operating with leptons (FCC-ee), must protect not only the experiments against backgrounds, but also the machine itself from beam losses. With a 17.8 MJ stored energy of the electron and positron beams, they are highly destructive, and beam losses risk to cause damage or a quench of superconducting elements. Accurate collimation simulation tools and models are needed to design the collimation system and optimize the collimation performance, including magnetic tracking, synchrotron radiation and optics tapering, as well as particle -matter interactions. As no existing code was found that incorporated all these features, a new simulation software tool has been developed. The tool is based on an interface between a particle tracking engine, pyAT or Xtrack, and a Monte -Carlo particle -matter interaction engine for collimator scattering, BDSIM, which is based on Geant4. Results from a simulation of edge scattering from a beam halo collimator in the FCC-ee are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the tool.

Simulation de phénomènes

La simulation de phénomènes est un outil utilisé dans le domaine de la recherche et du développement. Elle permet d'étudier les réactions d'un système à différentes contraintes pour en déduire les résultats recherchés en se passant d'expérimentation. Les systèmes technologiques (infrastructures, véhicules, réseaux de communication, de transport ou d'énergie) sont soumis à différentes contraintes et actions. Le moyen le plus simple d'étudier leurs réactions serait d'expérimenter, c'est-à-dire d'exercer l'action souhaitée sur l'élément en cause pour observer ou mesurer le résultat.

Lumière collimatée

Une lumière collimatée est une lumière dont les rayonnements sont quasiment parallèles et se déploient lentement quand ils se propagent. Le mot est relatif à « colinéaire » et implique une lumière qui ne se disperse pas avec la distance (idéalement), ou qui sera très peu dispersée (dans la réalité). Un faisceau parfaitement collimaté, sans divergence, ne peut pas être créé à cause du principe de diffraction, mais la lumière ne peut qu'être approximativement collimatée par certains processus, par exemple au moyen d'un collimateur.

Collisionneur

Un collisionneur est un type d'accélérateur de particules mettant en jeu des faisceaux dirigés de particules élémentaires.
