Polarisation (optique)La polarisation est une propriété qu'ont les ondes vectorielles (ondes qui peuvent osciller selon plus d'une orientation) de présenter une répartition privilégiée de l'orientation des vibrations qui les composent. Les ondes électromagnétiques, telles que la lumière, ou les ondes gravitationnelles ont ainsi des propriétés de polarisation. Les ondes mécaniques transverses dans les solides peuvent aussi être polarisées. Cependant, les ondes longitudinales (telles que les ondes sonores) ne sont pas concernées.
DichroismIn optics, a dichroic material is either one which causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (colours) (not to be confused with dispersion), or one in which light rays having different polarizations are absorbed by different amounts. Beam splitter The original meaning of dichroic, from the Greek dikhroos, two-coloured, refers to any optical device which can split a beam of light into two beams with differing wavelengths.
Structure fineEn physique atomique, la structure fine décrit le dédoublement de raies spectrales d'un atome. Détectable par spectroscopie à haute résolution spectrale, la structure fine est un effet d'origine relativiste dont l'expression correcte se déduit à partir de l'équation relativiste pour les particules de spin 1/2 : l'équation de Dirac. Les raies denses observées dans les spectres sont prédites par l'étude de l'énergie d’interaction entre l’électron et le proton sans tenir compte du spin et des effets relativistes de l’électron.
Polarisation circulaireLa polarisation circulaire d'un rayonnement électromagnétique est une polarisation où la norme du vecteur du champ électrique ne change pas alors que son orientation change selon un mouvement de rotation. En électrodynamique la norme et la direction d'un champ électrique sont représentés par un vecteur comme on peut le voir dans l'animation ci-contre. Dans le cas d'une onde polarisée circulairement, les vecteurs d'un champ électrique, à un point donné dans l'espace, décrivent un cercle en fonction du temps.
Elliptical polarizationIn electrodynamics, elliptical polarization is the polarization of electromagnetic radiation such that the tip of the electric field vector describes an ellipse in any fixed plane intersecting, and normal to, the direction of propagation. An elliptically polarized wave may be resolved into two linearly polarized waves in phase quadrature, with their polarization planes at right angles to each other. Since the electric field can rotate clockwise or counterclockwise as it propagates, elliptically polarized waves exhibit chirality.
Linear polarizationIn electrodynamics, linear polarization or plane polarization of electromagnetic radiation is a confinement of the electric field vector or magnetic field vector to a given plane along the direction of propagation. The term linear polarization (French: polarisation rectiligne) was coined by Augustin-Jean Fresnel in 1822. See polarization and plane of polarization for more information. The orientation of a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave is defined by the direction of the electric field vector.
Magnetic circular dichroismMagnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is the differential absorption of left and right circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) light, induced in a sample by a strong magnetic field oriented parallel to the direction of light propagation. MCD measurements can detect transitions which are too weak to be seen in conventional optical absorption spectra, and it can be used to distinguish between overlapping transitions. Paramagnetic systems are common analytes, as their near-degenerate magnetic sublevels provide strong MCD intensity that varies with both field strength and sample temperature.
Polarization rotatorA polarization rotator is an optical device that rotates the polarization axis of a linearly polarized light beam by an angle of choice. Such devices can be based on the Faraday effect, on birefringence, or on total internal reflection. Rotators of linearly polarized light have found widespread applications in modern optics since laser beams tend to be linearly polarized and it is often necessary to rotate the original polarization to its orthogonal alternative. Chiral mediaThe term chiral ˈkaɪrəl describes an object, especially a molecule, which has or produces a non-superposable mirror image of itself. In chemistry, such a molecule is called an enantiomer or is said to exhibit chirality or enantiomerism. The term "chiral" comes from the Greek word for the human hand, which itself exhibits such non-superimposeability of the left hand precisely over the right. Due to the opposition of the fingers and thumbs, no matter how the two hands are oriented, it is impossible for both hands to exactly coincide.
