Mathematical Properties of the JPEG2000 Wavelet Filters

Résumé

The LeGall 5⁄3 and Daubechies 9⁄7 filters have risen to special prominence because they were selected for inclusion in the JPEG2000 standard. Here, we determine their key mathematical features: Riesz bounds, order of approximation, and regularity (Hölder and Sobolev). We give approximation theoretic quantities such as the asymptotic constant for the L2L ^{ 2 } error and the angle between the analysis and synthesis spaces which characterizes the loss of performance with respect to an orthogonal projection. We also derive new asymptotic error formulæ that exhibit bound constants that are proportional to the magnitude of the first nonvanishing moment of the wavelet. The Daubechies 9⁄7 stands out because it is very close to orthonormal, but this turns out to be slightly detrimental to its asymptotic performance when compared to other wavelets with four vanishing moments.

JPEG 2000
Asymptotic analysis
In mathematical analysis, asymptotic analysis, also known as asymptotics, is a method of describing limiting behavior. As an illustration, suppose that we are interested in the properties of a function f (n) as n becomes very large. If f(n) = n2 + 3n, then as n becomes very large, the term 3n becomes insignificant compared to n2. The function f(n) is said to be "asymptotically equivalent to n2, as n → ∞". This is often written symbolically as f (n) ~ n2, which is read as "f(n) is asymptotic to n2".
Ondelette

The Sparsity of Cycle Spinning for Wavelet-Based Solutions of Linear Inverse Problems

Michaël Unser, Rahul Parhi

The usual explanation of the efficacy of wavelet-based methods hinges on the sparsity of many real-world objects in the wavelet domain. Yet, standard wavelet-shrinkage techniques for sparse reconstruction are not competitive in practice, one reason being t ...

Safety in Numbers: Asymptotic Analysis of a Monitoring Problem

Emre Telatar, Reka Inovan

In this work, we introduce a setup where a monitoring entity attempts to distinguish a cheating player among a group of regular players where all players behave in order to maximize their reward. We assume that the cheating player has an "information advan ...
