The SENSE laboratory, part of the Ferring Pharmaceuticals Margaretha Kamprad Chair in Environmental Sciences at EPFL, focuses on improving the monitoring and understanding of physical and biogeochemical processes in extreme environments, particularly polar and high-altitude regions. Their mission is to address the challenges of climate change and greenhouse gas biogeochemistry in these critical areas by enhancing environmental data collection through innovative engineering and technology solutions. One of their key priorities is the development of smarter sensors for sensing dissolved gases, including greenhouse gas components, in aquatic environments using in-situ probes. Led by Prof. Jerome Chappellaz, the team has made significant contributions to the field, including high-resolution measurements of dissolved methane in various environments like the Arctic Ocean and Lake Kivu in Rwanda.
