Dr. Christophe Moser is Associate Professor of Microengineering and Industrial Relations at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. He was the co-founder and CEO of Ondax,Inc for ten years prior to joining EPFL. During this decade, he raised $15 million from corporate and venture capital sources to fund volume production of thick holographic components in glass and develop devices enabled by these components such as tunable add-drop multiplexers for telecommunications, ultra-narrowband notch filters for low frequency Raman systems, high power semi-conductor frequency-narrowed pumps for fiber lasers, single frequency fixed and tunable lasers for sensing and femtosecond pulse compressors for micro-machining applications. Dr. Moser has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, a minor in finance and a bachelor degree in Physics from EPFL. He is the co-inventor of 24 patents, 14 peer reviewed scientific publications, 9 IEEE proceedings and a book chapter. Benoit Deveaud is now Research Director at Ecole Polytechnique in Palaiseau (France) Benoît Deveaud was born in France in 1952. In 1971, he enters Ecole Polytechnique in Paris where he specializes in physics. In 1974, he joins the National Center for research in Telecommunications (CNET). He undertakes at the same time studies on the main impurity centers in III-V semiconductors, and continues his studies in physics by preparing a diploma in solid state physics in Rennes. In 1984, he defends his PhD thesis at the University of Grenoble, under the supervision of Gérard Martinez. Meanwhile, his team gets interested in semiconductor microstructures and launches studies on the structural and optical properties of superlattices based on gallium arsenide. These studies highlight for example vertical transport in superlattices as well as the quantification of excitonic energies in a quantum well. In 1986 he joins the team of Daniel Chemla in Bell Laboratories (Holmdel, USA) and takes part in the development of the first luminescence set-up having a temporal resolution better than 1 picosecond. He studies then ultrafast processes in quantum wells. Returning to France in 1988, at CNET, he coaches a laboratory of high-speed studies, interested in the optical and electronic properties of semiconductor materials. Appointed professor in Physics at EPFL in October 1993, his research team studies the physics of ultrafast processes in semiconductor micro and nanostructures and in devices that use them. He has been the Director the Institute of Micro and Optoelectronics since 1998, then of the Institute of Quantum Photonic and Electronics from 2003 to 2008. His team takes an active part in the "Quantum Photonics" National Center of Competence in Research, of which he was the Deputy Director from 2001 to 2005 then the Director from July 2005 till the end of the NCCR in 2013 From 2008 till 2014 he has been Dean for Research at EPFL and president of the research commission. Starting in 2014, he has been head of Physics, till his departure from EPFL in 2017. He has been a divisional editor of Physical Review Letters from 2001 to 2007.

Dr. Hans Peter Herzig is Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Past President of the European Optical Society (EOS). His current research interests include refractive and diffractive micro-optics, nano-scale optics and optical MEMS. Hans Peter Herzig received his diploma in physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1978. From 1978 to 1982 he was a scientist with the Optics Development Department of Kern in Aarau, Switzerland, working in lens design and optical testing. In 1983, he became a graduate research assistant with the Applied Optics Group at the Institute of Microtechnology of the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, working in the field of holographic optical elements. In 1987, he received his PhD degree in optics. From 1989 to 2001 he was head of the micro-optics research group in Neuchâtel. From 2002 to 2008 he was a full professor and head of the Applied Optics Laboratory at the University of Neuchâtel. Professor Herzig joined the faculty at EPFL in January 2009. He is member of OSA, IEEE Photonics Society and Fellow of EOS. 2009-2010 he was President of the European Optical Society (EOS), 2001-2009 Vice-President of the Swiss Society of Optics and Microscopy and 2012-2014 Vice-President of ICO. Dr. Herzig is in the editorial board of different scientific journals (JM3, Optical Review, JEOS). He served as Conference Chairman for international conferences of EOS, IEE, IEEE/LEOS, OSA and SPIE; and as Guest Editor of three special issues of IEEE, OSA journals. He is editor of a well-known book on micro-optics (published in English and Chinese), author of 14 book chapters, over 150 “peer reviewed” articles and 300 conference proceedings.

De nationalité allemande, né en 1952 à Lauchheim (Baden-Württemberg). Après des études de physique à l'Université Fridericiana de Karlsruhe, il y obtient son diplôme de physique en 1978. En 1979, il rejoint l'Institut de Recherches franco-allemand à Saint-Louis (France) comme collaborateur scientifique. En 1986, il rejoint la division de recherche de Carl Zeiss à Oberkochen (Allemagne) où il développe principalement divers systèmes laser pour des applications médicales. Dès 1990, il dirige le laboratoire laser de la division médicale. En 1993, il prend la direction de l'unité "laser d'ophtalmologie". Dès le début 1995, il est chargé de restructurer et regrouper les nombreuses activités d'ophtalmologie chez Carl Zeiss et de les transférer à Jena. Durant cette période, il réalise des nouveaux instruments de réfraction, des biomicroscopes et des caméras rétiniennes. Dès janvier 1998, il dirige la recherche de Carl Zeiss à Jena où il initie de nouveaux projets en microscopie, en microtechnique et en recherche médicale. En juillet 1998, il est nommé professeur ordinaire en optique biomédicale à l'Institut d'optique appliquée. Au sein du Département de microtechnique, son activité de recherche porte sur la photonique biomédicale. Il participe à l'enseignement d'optique et d'instrumentation biomédicale. Marc Ilegems obtained degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Brussels in 1965 and a doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1970. From 1969 to 1977 he was a Member of Technical Staff at the Solid State Electronics Research Laboratory, Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill. He joined the Ecole Polytechnique Federale (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Lausanne in October 1977 as Professor and Director of the new Interdepartmental Institute of Microelectronics (1977-1983) and subsequently as Director of the Institute of Micro- and Optoelectronics (1983-2000) and of the Semiconductor Device Physics Laboratory (1983-2005). Prof. Ilegems served as Dean of the Department of Physics from 1998 to 2000, and as Director of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) in Quantum Photonics (2001-2005), the Swiss Priority Program OPTICS (1993-1999) and the Swiss National Program on Micro- and Optoelectronics (1983-90). He is a member of the Scientific Council and has acted as expert and consultant for several national and European research organizations. His current activities include technical and patent consulting for private organizations, contributions to the definition and management of research programs in the framework of bilateral collaborations between Poland, Hungary and Switzerland (2011-2017), and participation as member of various ICT and FET review panels within the Horizon 2020 programme. Prof. Ilegems received an honorary doctorate from the University of Toulouse (1998) and the Heinrich Welker Award from the Compound Semiconductor Symposium (2006) for his contributions to III-V semiconductor materials and device research. The research activities of the Semiconductor Device Physics Laboratory centred on the physics and technology of semiconductor devices. The main subjects of interest included quantum photonics (semiconductor microcavities, light emitting diodes, lasers and detectors), wide bandgap semiconductor nitrides, physics of nano and low-dimensional structures, high electron mobility transistors, crystal growth and materials technology. The research programs were carried out in close collaboration with numerous academic and industrial groups in Switzerland and abroad, in particular within the framework of programs of the European Community. Earlier research topics pursued at Bell Laboratories and at EPFL include Molecular Beam Epitaxy and doping of GaAs and AlGaAs thin films with applications to heterostructure lasers, detectors, and Bragg mirrors, hydride vapor phase epitaxy and physical characterization of GaN on sapphire, liquid-solid phase diagrams of ternary III-V compound systems, and silicon-based non-volatile memory cells. Prof. Ilegems is the author or co-author of over 250 scientific publications (citation index h = 48) and 7 book chapters, and has supervised over 30 doctoral students in Lausanne.
