A smartphone is a portable computer device that combines mobile telephone functions and computing functions into one unit. They are distinguished from older-design feature phones by their more advanced hardware capabilities and extensive mobile operating systems, which facilitate wider software, access to the internet (including web browsing over mobile broadband), and multimedia functionality (including music, video, cameras, and gaming), alongside core phone functions such as voice calls and text messaging. Smartphones typically contain a number of metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) integrated circuit (IC) chips, include various sensors that can be leveraged by pre-installed and third-party software (such as a magnetometer, a proximity sensor, a barometer, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and more), and support wireless communication protocols (such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or satellite navigation). Individual activity-travel analysis based on smartphone WiFi data

The mobility patterns of the population are the basis of most analyses in the transportation field. We aim to extract these patterns from smartphone traces. The following thesis proposes a Bayesian approach based on smartphone location records, land use information and schedule data to understand the activities that people daily perform. We investigate two alternatives. The prior is either based on schedule data or based on land use information. We test the algorithm on the smartphone WiFi traces provided by Nokia. They have been obtained from people who live around the Leman Lake, essentially in the region of Lausanne. The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) and OpenStreerMap (OSM) provide the schedule and the land use information. The results show that the prior based on schedule data is not convenient: the importance of the individual behavior decreases, and the activity Home comes up too often. The results are much better when the prior depends on the land use that surrounds a users’ location of interest. In addition, we have successfully extracted recognizable mobility patterns, particularly for the activities Home and Work.

Ecological momentary assessment of emotional processing: An exploratory analysis comparing daily life and a psychotherapy analogue session

Background: Emotional processing has been studied in psychotherapy as a state-dependent, sequential process of change. So far, no studies have applied this conceptualisation of emotional processing to the assessments of emotion in daily life. This is particularly important in the light of the pertinence of day-by-day fluctuations of emotions for understanding mental health and for monitoring the impact of prevention and psychotherapy programmes. This study examined the internal and ecological validity of a state-dependent conceptualisation of emotional processing in daily life, in comparison with an experiential-psychodynamic psychotherapy analogue session. Methods: In total, N = 42 university students participated in an experiential-psychodynamic session, completed symptom measures and responded to a one-week period of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) using a smartphone. Emotional processing in the session was assessed using the valid observer-rated measure Classification of Affective Meaning States (CAMS), and emotional responses in daily life were assessed using newly developed theory-consistent items self-rated via an interactive smartphone program. Results: Internal validity was generally satisfactory across the subscales used in EMA. Correspondence between EMA and in-session emotional processing was generally low, but specific relationships were found between self-rated fear, rejecting anger, hurt/grief or loneliness and the observer-rated productive emotions in the psychotherapy analogue session. Relationships between maladaptive emotional processing and intensity in symptoms were found. Conclusions: This is the first study to have examined the validity of a state-dependent conception of emotional processing in daily life, in direct comparison with a psychological session. We recommend using this assessment schedule to develop or complement integrative prevention or intervention programmes.
