Nowadays, usage-based acquisition models for e-books, as PDA and EBA, are quite spread and allow libraries to offer wider collections, without acquiring them. A PDA with Ebook Central was implemented in 2019 and a first EBA with Wiley in 2021. The EPFL Library ran several analyses in order to evaluate their accuracy after one or more years, with respect to users’ needs. The advantages and limitations of the use of usage statistics in collection development were also highlighted in this study. These two models have proven to be a good complement to the acquisition models based on liaison librarians’ e-book selections. Both also greatly alleviate this selection work, while increasing the management and analysis tasks for the librarians in charge of electronic resources. The PDA model has required adjustments over the years, to ensure that accessible collections contents better match to EPFL domains. The usage of the titles acquired through this model is generally higher than that of those acquired otherwise, nevertheless the PDA presents an increased risk of acquiring titles with an ephemeral popularity, despite the implementation of a loan system before the final purchase. The EBA program showed an interest among patrons in titles related topics and publication years that were not necessarily expected. This acquisition model requires a large investment for statistical analysis by the librarians responsible of electronic resources, but the results of these analysis allowed to go beyond the sole need to select titles at the end of the EBA program. These two models led us questioning more broadly the evolution of the role of selection made by librarians, and the part of human intervention in models where usage statistics are the starting point for the selection.

Post Occupancy Evaluation, Case Studies : Rolex Learning Center

The Rolex Learning Center opened in 2010. Where do we stand 8 years after ? Students are given the floor to express their feedback on the building and the library spaces. EPFL Library was mandated to propose user spaces improvements for the building : librarians assessed the building use, explored students’ needs and present their findings. Librarians then highlight the prior needs and present their main propositions, related to furniture, spaces redesign, additional equipment and facilities in the building. They also examine the consequences for the Library to be in the Rolex Learning Center, outside and within the institution.

Too Quiet in the Library: An Empirical Study of Security Updates in Android Apps' Native Code

Android apps include third-party native libraries to increase performance and to reuse functionality. Native code is directly executed from apps through the Java Native Interface or the Android Native Development Kit. Android developers add precompiled native libraries to their projects, enabling their use. Unfortunately, developers often stniggle or simply neglect to update these libraries in a timely manner. This results in the continuous use of outdated native libraries with unpatched security vulnerabilities years after patches became available. To further understand such phenomena, we study the security updates in native libraries in the most popular 200 free apps on Google Play from Sept. 2013 to May 2020. A core difficulty we face in this study is the identification of libraries and their versions. Developers often rename or modify libraries, making their identification challenging. We create an approach called LibRARIAN (LibRAry veRsion IdentificAtioN) that accurately identifies native libraries and their versions as found in Android apps based on our novel similarity metric bin(2)sim. LibRARIAN leverages different features extracted from libraries based on their metadata and identifying strings in read-only sections. We discovered 53/200 popular apps (26.5%) with vulnerable versions with known CVEs between Sept. 2013 and May 2020, with 14 of those apps remaining vulnerable. We find that app developers took, on average, 528.71 +/- 40.20 days to apply security patches, while library developers release a security patch after 54.59 +/- 8.12 days-a 10 times slower rate of update.
