An architectural style is a set of characteristics and features that make a building or structure notable or historically identifiable. It is a sub-class of style in the visual arts generally, and most styles in architecture relate closely to a wider contemporary artistic style. A style may include such elements as form, method of construction, building materials, and regional character. Most architecture can be classified within a chronology of styles which changes over time, reflecting changing fashions, beliefs and religions, or the emergence of new ideas, technology, or materials which make new styles possible. Styles therefore emerge from the history of a society. They are documented in the subject of architectural history. This course proposes to investigate six strategies for architecture in the age of acceleration: Regionalism, Territoriality, Participation, Transformation, Commonality and Rationality. Anchoring these strategies in recent architectural history, it will explore their relevance for today's practice.

Technologie du Bâti V aborde le bâtiment comme un système d'opérations techniques et culturelles invoquant des choix liés à l'environnement, au matériau, à la structure, et au montage. L'objectif du cours est d'amener les étudiants à acquérir des compétences sur la conception critique du bâtiment.

Le cours vise a familiariser les etudiants avec l'histoire de l'environnement et des paysages, et avec la maniere dont les preoccupations environnementales amenent a repenser aujourd'hui le sens et les principes de l'architecture et des disciplines de projet.

L’agrandissement en cours de la gare de Lausanne entraîne des interventions collatérales à la planification de ce chantier dont la fin est prévue en 2030. Parmi elles, la démolition de l’immeuble situé aux Nos 22 à 26 de la rue du Simplon, qui sert actuellement d’hébergement temporaire à des familles et étudiant.es, et qui abrite des locaux associatifs. Le projet explore deux stratégies qui redéfinissent la temporalité du processus de démolition pour y inclure les contraintes matérielles et humaines du lieu : une résistance programmatique et un repli stratégique. La résistance programmatique se confronte au projet de la gare, et propose de maintenir une partie de l’immeuble du Simplon et sa population en découpant sa structure et en y adaptant le plan autour d’une circulation plus ou moins perméable. Le repli stratégique considère la démolition du Simplon comme point de départ de projet, en planifiant sa déconstruction selon les éléments architecturaux disponibles, qui serviront au déménagement des associations au No 1 de la rue de Lausanne à Renens. Cette stratégie produit une maquette qui, selon le principe de la boîte à outils, servira d’appui à leurs réflexions architecturales. Les deux propositions sont reliées par la planification du chantier, qui rythme les différentes étapes structurelles, matérielles et humaines de transformation, et rendent compte de la portée de chaque geste. L'acte architectural s'inscrit ainsi dans la profondeur des relations et des rapports de propriété dont il est le support.

Londres, capitale du post-modernisme?

The advantage of the dynamism of the London architectural scene seems rather ignored by historians and theorists. Not only is London absent from the grand narrative of modernity, but it is also denied the status of avant-garde, although since the 1960s, the British capital has been one of the main testing grounds of the renewal of forms and architectural ideas. The emergence of the of notion âpost-modernismâ at the turn of 1970s, initiated within the London specialized publishing, confirms this central role. This theoretical notion was created by the historian Charles Jencks (whose professor was Reyner Banham, initiator of the New Brutalism with Alison and Peter Smithson) as an alternative to modernism. It has transformed the architectural scene by establishing the return of historicism, the great moral taboo of a modernity based essentially on functionalism. This theoretical revolution, however, did not occur without causing grotesque postures, fueling a debate exacerbated and soon disrupted by the controversial speech of Prince Charles, who became the spokesman of the traditionalists. The impact in the media of this âpost-modern affairâ has led to believe in the manifestation of a crisis of legitimacy and of reception for the work of architects, in the context of heated debates concerning the cancellations of three major architectural and urban planning competitions for the capital city â the extension of the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square, the No.1 Poultry programme in the City, the redesigning of Paternoster Square near St Paulâs Cathedral. Yet, this intense sequence of the reappraisal of modernism has not curbed the development of an innovative and a radical architecture. On the contrary, it has led to the deregulation of the modern discourse by problematizing the architectâs responsibility in the creation of the built environment and by forcing to reconsider the challenges of integrating radicalism in a located environment. In this, âpost-modernismâ questions the foundations and the revival of a specifically British culturalist approach, as an alternative to the progressive model that has guided the idea and the act of modernity.

Le projet questionne la manière d'intervenir dans un paysage protégé, fragile et figé par les récents processus de patrimonialisation et de protection. Il se concentre sur le rapport entre l'objet architectural et territorial afin d'établir quelle doit être la formule expressive de l'objet pour acquérir une dimension territoriale. Le développement du projet se situe à l'intermédiaire de deux attitudes antinomiques: le mimétisme et l'opposition. Par l'affirmation, il présente une manière d'intervenir aujourd'hui dans un tel lieu. Ainsi, les motivations du choix des matériaux, de la géométrie, de la technique de mise en œuvre et de l'expression, tantôt s'assimilent, tantôt contrastent avec celles des bâtisseurs de Lavaux. La recherche de sites appropriés à la concrétisation de projets met en évidence une série d'opportunités. Les communes de Lavaux prévoient la réalisation de plusieurs parkings ‘‘camouflés'' sous la vigne dans le but de conserver le paysage intact. Le travail critique cette idée simpliste d'intégration. Il étudie les potentiels inexploités et tire avantage des problématiques liées à de telles réalisations.
