In computer programming, a software framework is an abstraction in which software, providing generic functionality, can be selectively changed by additional user-written code, thus providing application-specific software. It provides a standard way to build and deploy applications and is a universal, reusable software environment that provides particular functionality as part of a larger software platform to facilitate the development of software applications, products and solutions. Software frameworks may include support programs, compilers, code libraries, toolsets, and application programming interfaces (APIs) that bring together all the different components to enable development of a project or system. This work describes the development of a software framework allowing to simulate range data acquired with different kind of sensors such as stereo camera and ultrasonic probe. The sensors characteristic error are modeled with probability density functions. The range data are used to describe the external shape of deformable objects and combining them with force measurements it allows to estimate the physical properties of the object.

Current Skills Gap in Manufacturing: Towards a New Skills Framework for Factories of the Future

In the Factories of the Future framework, cutting-edge ICT developments have been accomplished by the industry, triggering new professional needs, which lead to new learning and training needs and new roles, especially regarding high-skilled labor force. Under this light, in this paper we define and analyze further the reasons triggering what is known as a "skills gap" in the world of European and global manufacturing, before reviewing applied solutions. Missing roles and related manufacturing skills, necessary for the development and progress of Factories of the Future, are then identified, based on surveys which reveal the voices of industrial stakeholders dispersed in the international market. The present analysis was conducted in the frame of the FP7 FoF project "ManuSkills", which aims to study the use of enhanced ICT-based technologies and training methodologies to facilitate an increase of young talent interest in manufacturing and to support their training of new manufacturing skills.

Design of a semantic knowledge base to support the product development process

New product development today is a knowledge-heavy process, but very often this knowledge is not adequately handled, it’s not made readily available to the actors, or is lost within or between similar projects. Furthermore, different legacy tools and data storage systems are dedicated to handling the data related to a particular phase or aspect of product development, but usually they are disconnected and not available to other interested parties. This necessitates the usage of a centralized knowledge management solution, which will include and connect all the product and process related knowledge, and enable its availability and re-use. This paper presents the design of an ontology-centered knowledge base (KB) which serves as a central access point to knowledge for all human and software stakeholders involved in the product development process. The KB is a software framework consisting of several modules, which together provide the ability to store, retrieve, edit and search for knowledge, and the ontology specifies its structure (entity types and relationships) and its classification scheme.
