This lecture covers the determination of the necessary structural number (SN) for road pavements, explaining how to calculate it based on traffic class and bearing capacity. Different methods to determine SN are presented, including values based on traffic class and total traffic, as well as an exact formula. The lecture also discusses how to compare the calculated SN with the required SN for pavement design. Practical examples are provided, showing how to apply these concepts to design flexible pavements and optimize material usage. The lecture concludes with exercises for students to practice dimensioning road pavements based on traffic data, soil bearing capacity, and different pavement layer configurations.
