This lecture delves into metabolomics, exploring its role in understanding cellular physiology through small molecule profiling. It discusses challenges like sample size and spatial resolution, as well as future directions such as multi-omics integration. The lecture also covers the distribution of recent publications on metabolomics applications and the metabolic requirements of cell proliferation. Furthermore, it examines the Warburg effect, metabolic pathway rewiring in proliferating cells, and the use of drugs targeting glucose metabolism, including PET scanning. The session concludes with thought problems related to the Warburg effect and the choice of small molecules for PET scanning.
