This lecture introduces key concepts from systems biology and systems engineering, focusing on modeling and analyzing complex biological networks, with an emphasis on metabolism and signaling. Topics include metabolic reaction networks, metabolomics, protein expression analysis, signaling networks, DNA-protein interactions, and single-cell data interpretation. Methods covered include flux balance analysis, thermodynamics-based analysis, kinetic models, metabolic control analysis, and stochastic simulation. The course aims to develop skills in mass balance formulation, linear programming, kinetic modeling, and critical thinking in systems biology.
