Biography

Dr. Md. K. Nazeeruddin received M.Sc. and Ph. D. in inorganic chemistry from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India. He joined as a Lecturer in Deccan College of Engineering and Technology, Osmania University in 1986, and subsequently, moved to Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar, as a Research Associate. He was awarded the Government of Indias fellowship in 1987 for study abroad. In 2014, EPFL awarded him the title of Professor. His current research at EPFL focuses on Dye Sensitized Solar Cells, Perovskite Solar Cells, CO2 reduction, Hydrogen production, and Light-emitting diodes. He has published more than 509 peer-reviewed papers, ten book chapters, and he is inventor/co-inventor of over 50 patents. The high impact of his work has been recognized by invitations to speak at over 130 international conferences, and has been nominated to the OLLA International Scientific Advisory Board. He appeared in the ISI listing of most cited chemists, and has more than 49'000 citations with an h-index of 105. He is teaching "Functional Materials" course at EPFL, and Korea University; directing, and managing several industrial, national, and European Union projects. He was awarded EPFL Excellence prize in 1998 and 2006, Brazilian FAPESP Fellowship in 1999, Japanese Government Science & Technology Agency Fellowship, in 1998, Government of India National Fellowship in 1987-1988. Recently he has been appointed as World Class University (WCU) professor by the Korea University, Jochiwon, Korea (http://dses.korea.ac.kr/eng/sub01_06_2.htm), Adjunct Professor by the King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Eminent Professor in Brunei.

A Triethyleneglycol C-60 Mono-adduct Derivative for Efficient Electron Transport in Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted increasing attention in recent years owing to their low-temperature fabrication proces s. However, they suffer from a limited number of electron transport materials available with [6,6]-phenyl C-61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) to be the most widely studied based on its appropriate energy levels and high electron mobility. The low relative permittivity and aggregation tendency upon illumination of PCBM, however, compromises the solar cell efficiency whereas its modest hydrophobicity negatively impacts on the device stability. Alternative electron transport materials with desired properties and appropriate degree of hydrophobicity are thus desirable for further developments in inverted PSCs. Herein, we synthesize a triethyleneglycol C-60 mono-adduct derivative (termed as EPF03) and test it as a novel electron transport material to replace PCBM in inverted PSCs based on a quadruple cation (RbCsMAFA) perovskite. We also compare this derivative with two novel fullerenes decorated with two (EPF01) or one dodecyl (EPF02) long side chains. The latter two fail to perform efficiently in inverted PSCs whereas the former enabled a power conversion efficiency of 18.43%, which represents a 9% improvement compared to the reference device using PCBM (17.21%). The enhanced performance mainly stems from improved electron extraction and reduced recombination enabled by the insertion of the large relative permittivity amongst other properties of EPF03. Furthermore, our results indicate that triethylene glycol side chains can also passivate perovskite trap states, suppress ion migration and enhance photostability and long-term stability of EPF03 based perovskite solar cells.

Foldable Hole-Transporting Materials for Merging Electronic States between Defective and Perfect Perovskite Sites

Defective and perfect sites naturally exist within electronic semiconductors, and considerable efforts to reduce defects to improve the performance of electronic devices, especially in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (ABX(3)), are undertaken. Herein, foldable hole-transporting materials (HTMs) are developed, and they extend the wavefunctions of A-site cations of perovskite, which, as hybridized electronic states, link the trap states (defective site) and valence band edge (perfect site) between the naturally defective and perfect sites of the perovskite surface, finally converting the discrete trap states of the perovskite as the continuous valence band to reduce trap recombination. Tailoring the foldability of the HTMs tunes the wavefunctions between defective and perfect surface sites, allowing the power conversion efficiency of a small cell to reach 23.22% and that of a mini-module (6.5 x 7 cm, active area = 30.24 cm(2)) to reach as high as 21.71% with a fill factor of 81%, the highest value reported for non-spiro-OMeTAD-based perovskite solar modules.

Near-infrared luminescent materials have recently received considerable attention for a large number of applications, including in solid-state lighting, as bioimaging agents, as photovoltaic cells, and in the telecommunication industry. By adding diverse electron-donating or withdrawing groups on ancillary ligands based on benzenethiol-phenanthroline, we synthesized and optoelectronically characterized a series of novel ionic ruthenium complexes, namely RuS, RuSCl, RuSMe, and RuSNH2, for using in a light-emitting electrochemical cell. The synthesized complexes are intense red emitters in the range of 584-605 nm in solution, which depends on the substitutions of electron donor/acceptor moieties on the ancillary ligands. To find a suitable quantum mechanical approach, benchmark calculations based on time dependent density functional theory were carried out on these complexes. Our benchmark revealed that the M06-L method has results close to those of the experiment. Furthermore, to gain a deeper insight into electronic transitions, several excitation processes were investigated at the TD-DFT-SMD-MN12-L/gen level. The results showed that in the designed complexes, the dominant transition is between the 4dZ2 electron of Ru (particle) and the pi* orbitals of the ancillary ligand (hole). The single-layer devices, including these complexes along with a Ga/In cathode by a facile deposition method without the addition of any electron or hole transport layers, were fabricated and displayed red (678 nm) to near-infrared (701 nm) emission as well as a decrease of turn-on voltage from 3.85 to 3.10 V. In particular, adding a methyl group to the ancillary ligand in the complex RuSNH2 increases the external quantum efficiency to 0.55%, one of the highest observed values in the ruthenium phenanthroline family. This simple structure of the device lets us develop the practical applications of light-emitting electrochemical cells based on injection and screen printing methods, which are very promising for the vacuum-free deposition of top electrodes.
